TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT PROSTHODONTICS SURGERY, ORAL NEOPLASMS |
| Abstract: |
This study discusses rehabilitation of masticatory system deformities and temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMD’s) following surgery for malignant tumors of the mandible and radiation therapy of the head and neck region. Successful prosthodontic rehabilitation results and acceptable fi nal maxillomandibular relationships were achieved with the help of myofunctional training therapy, repositioning splints, temporary mouth-guard appliances, and occlusal adjustments or modifi cations of denture design. Prosthodontic treatment of patients with postoperative mandibular defects (following hemi-mandibulectomy) is described, and the role of supporting physiotherapy and myotherapy in regaining functional effi ciency of the masticatory system was emphasised. |

| Abstract: |
For correct diagnosis case history and clinical appearance have the most important role, and diagnostic methods later merely supplement initial knowledge of the disease. Unfortunately, in the daily practice of the maxillofacial surgeon malignant tumours are more frequent than benign tumours and nontumorous lesions, with which they can be confused. Consequently, the two basic alternatives which confront the clinician - to conduct diagnostics in accordance with the most frequent diagnosis or in accordance with the most dangerous - merge into one in the case of tumours of the head and neck. The presentation will illustratively show cases of diagnoses of malignant tumours and conditions with which they may be confused. The pathology of the oral cavity, sinuses, jaws, skin and salivary glands will be presented. The examples presented are meant to refresh or supplement the oral surgeon's knowledge. |

SURGERY, ORAL FACIAL PAIN |
| Abstract: |
Styloid syndrome is a condition in which an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament causes occasional pain in the neck, a feeling of a foreign body (in the pharynx?) or some other form of retromandibular-cervical pain. In adults the styloid process is approximately 25 mm long with a tip which is located between theexternal and internal carotid arteries, lateral to the pharyngeal wall and the tonsillar fossa.Ossification of the stylohyoid and stylomandibular ligament causes prolongation of the styloid process and clinical symptoms. There are three syndromes closely connected with the styloid process syndrome: Costen's, Trotter's and Myofacial painful syndrome. Diagnosis can be made by a clinical examination and palpation of the tonsillar fossa, during which pain is felt by the patient.Radiographic finding may show several possible variations: elongated, pseudoarticulated and segmented styloid process, and according to the calcification: peripheral, partial, complete or nodular type calcification. Treatment is primarily surgical. The physician's knowledge of possible clinical variations and diverse symptomatology is important. The authors present the case of a female patient with Stylohyoid Syndrome treated by surgical shortening of the elongated styloid process. |
