The purpose of this work was to examine the prevalence of non-alignment and incisal wear of upper and lower anterior teeth in an examined population of dental students as well as to analyze the relation between alignment and incisal wear of the anterior teeth. The subjects chosen for this study were dental students (40 female, 40 male) of the School of Dental Medicine in Zagreb. The age of the subjects ranged from 20 to 26 years, mean 22.8 ± 1.8 years. Alignment of the teeth and incisal wear were assessed on the basis of stone casts in accordance with two index systems (NONAS and IwI). By testing the methods it was shown that the reproducibility of assessments of teeth alignment and incisal wear was satisfactory. In the upper jaw, one or more teeth were non-aligned in 48% of cases (most frequently the upper lateral incisors), while in the lower jaw there were 47% cases of non-alignment teeth (most frequently the lower central incisors). The prevalence of incisal wear of the anterior teeth in the population of dental students was 95%. By Pearson’s chi-square test, the relationship between the condition of alignment and incisal wear of anterior teeth was determined. The highest degree of tooth wear was registered on the right and left upper central incisor as well as on the right lower canine. |

| Abstract: |
INTRODUCTION: The intermaxillar relationship in overbite is one of the etiological factors of TMJ disorders (Pulinger, Sellingman and Gorbeirn, 1993). Nevertheless, it does not always cause malfunction. Sometimes the compensating mechanisms of the individual prevent the occurrence of symptoms and it only appears when parafunctional habit overloads the stomatognathic apparatus.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to escamine neuromuscular behaviour in patients with such occlusal alteration.MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present two cases with overbite: one bruxist with malfunction and one nonbruxist without symptoms of malfunction. An occlusal analysis and clinical, kinesiographic andelectromyographic exploration was performed in both patients. For the analysis we used a Dentatus A.R.L. articulator,Myotronics electromyograph and K6 kinesiograph.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The results of the exploration were compared with those of a healthy individual with normal occlusion, used as a reference. Lateral movements were restricted and with a mainly vertical component. In both cases there was an increase in electromyographic activity during normal mastication and swallowing, and in maximum force bite there was the same response betweenanterior temporalis and masseter muscles. The study demonstrated that the mandibular movements in both patients were very similar, and determined by the occlusal factor, in comparison to normal individuals. Nevertheless, the electromyographic exploration showsa different neuromuscular response by the patient adapted to this occlusal problem and the dysfunctional patient. |

DOWN SYNDROME MALOCCLUSION + complications |
| Abstract: |
Significant alterations of the cranio-orofacial region have been observed in subjects with Down’s syndrome. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of particular orthodontic malocclusion in these subjects. A group of 112 subjects with cytogenetically confirmed diagnosis of Down’s syndrome was examined. All the subjects underwent a complete dental examination. The following classification was used to determine malocclusion of crowding, premature tooth loss, class III malocclusion, open bite, class II division 2 malocclusion, unilateral cross bite and bilateral cross bite. Clipper language programs were designed for data processing. Malocclusion was found in 92% of the subjects. Class III malocclusion was most frequently observed (43.8%). Crowding and unilateral cross bite were found in 15% of the subjects respectively. Bilateral cross bite was present in 5.4% of the subjects. Premature tooth loss was observed in only 1% of the subjects whereas class II division 2 malocclusion was not recorded in any of the subjects examined. |

| Abstract: |
The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and extent of dentoalveolar compensation in subjects with disharmonious vertical jaw base relationships, in relation to subjects with normal occlusion. The study was performed on 37 lateral cephalograms of patients with open bite and 35 of patients with normal occlusion, aged 15 to 18 years. Each cephalogram was traced twice by two authors. The cephalometric analyses were performed by linear and angular measurements. The angular cephalometric variables were: n-s-gn, sp-pm:m-go, m-go-ar, the sum of the posterior angles according to Bjork (1947, 1954,1966,1972),1:sp-pm and 1:m-go. Linear cephalometric variables: oi, om oi/om, ui, um and ui/um were analysed using the methods of Korkhaus (1959). Statistical data analysis included descriptive statistics, method error, t-test and Pearson(s correlation coefficient for association between variables. Significant differences (p < 0.001) between the samples were found in all investigated variables except 1:sp-pm, oi/om and um. Retrusion of the lower incisors was found, indicating dentoalveolar adaptation to the present posterior rotation of the mandible. Inclination of the upper incisors in relation to the base of the maxilla was significantly negative correlated with the variable n-s-gn, and slightly negatively by correlated with the variable sp:pmm-go. The variables of the height of the upper and lower jaws (oi, om, ui, um) were significantly correlated. A significiant negative correlation was found between variables um and m-go-ar. The correlation between variable um and Bjork’s polygon was slightly negative. The variable ui showed slight negative correlation with the variable m-go-ar. Such a relationship is the result of compensatory retrusion of the lower incisors and a steep mandibular plane. |

| Abstract: |
In orthodontic casuistics, utterance impairments of varying severity and forms are quite frequently encountered, which primarily urged us to embark upon a study of interrelationship between orthodontic findings and speech function. A group of 45 subjects was examined. Cases in whom impairments of articulation were not caused by CNS dysfunction, were primarily selected according to casuistics. Thirty-one patients, 24 males and 7 females, aged 7-25 years, were completely studied. Representatives of all basic orthodontic abnormalities and 4 eugnathic subjects with utterance impairments were included for comparison. Utterance impairments were found to correlate with the stage and severity of orthodontic abnormality. |
