| Abstract: |
Svrha istraživanja bila je ispitati koliko je česta upala sluznice tijekom ortodontske terapije s obzirom na stupanj higijene i vrstu ortodontske naprave. Ispitanici i postupci: Sudjelovalo je 110 djece u dobi od 6 do 18 godina - 60 je imalo fiksne ili mobilne ortodontske naprave, a u kontrolnoj skupini bilo ih je 50 tek upućenih na ortodontsko liječenje. Primjenom verificiranih kliničkih testova svima je bio određen stupanj oralne higijene, stupanj upale gingive i intezitet upale sluznice. Rezultati: Učestalost i intezitet upale gingive bio je obrnuto proporcionalan stupnju oralne higijene (p<0,05). Lošiju oralnu higijenu imali su ispitanici u kontrolnoj skupini. Jače upalne promjene bile su uočene samo kod malobrojnih nositelja fiksnih ortodontskih naprava. Nije bila dokazana statistički znatna povezanost između upale sluznice i vrste ortodontske naprave. Zaključak: Rezultati pokazuju da nositelji ortodontskih naprava imaju bolju oralnu higijenu i rjeđe upaljenu sluznicu negoli oni u kontrolnoj skupini. |

| Abstract: |
Objective: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of 1% chlorhexidine-1% thymol varnish (Cervitec®) on Streptococcus mutans (SM) and Lactobacillus spp. (LB) levels in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Material and methods: Twelve participants went through an intensive mode of application: chlorhexidine varnish was administrated 3 times within a 1 week period. Saliva samples for determination of SM and LB baseline levels were collected before the first varnish administration followed by sampling 1 and 2 months after the first varnish application. Results: A month after administration the group with high colonization levels (6 persons) exhibited reduction of SM and LB counts when compared with baseline levels. The group with low colonization levels (6 persons) exhibited no significant reduction. Two months after treatment a slight growth of SM and LB counts was recognized. Conclusion: That indicates a time period of chlorhexidine efficiency and a necessary schedule of varnish application. |

| Abstract: |
The Herbst appliance was first applied almost 100 years ago. Thoughvery efficient, it has not been well accepted due to certain prejudice.The goal of this research work is to describe this appliance and present how it works. There is also a description of therapy of a young adult patient treated for mandibular retrognathism. To conclude, it should be noted that the Herbst appliance has proved to be an efficient therapeutic instrument, as the patient has shown not only dentoalveolar, but also skeletal changes, although his growth and development had already finished. The estimate of results of the treatment of the above mentioned case has been in accordance with the data from the recent research papers describing the cases when the appliance had been applied to adult patients, proving itself to be a valid alternative to the orthognathic surgery. |

| Abstract: |
A rare type of atypical rotation of upper central incisors is presented. Due to an extreme type of rotation, which was 90 degrees, and a restricted space left available, a fixed orthodontic treatment was applied and completed after two years of therapy. An individual optimum was achieved. |

| Abstract: |
In introductory remarks the most important biomechanical principles, which are relevant for the research, and conditions which must be satisfied presented in intraoral measuring of orthodontic forces were pointed out. First the aim of the research was defined, and then the investigation of mechanical properties of acrylics as a material for orthodontic appliances were carried out. The type of strain gauges, bonds and measuring system configurations, as well as measuring amplifiers and recording instruments were discussed. Some of measuring sensors, their principles and applicability were discussed. The calibration apparatus was modified for the sensor developed, and the calibration results were analysed by means of statistical methods (linear regression). The behaviour of all used sensors were found to be linear, which enables their application and reduces the measuring results interpretation. |
