| Abstract: |
Objective: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of 1% chlorhexidine-1% thymol varnish (Cervitec®) on Streptococcus mutans (SM) and Lactobacillus spp. (LB) levels in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Material and methods: Twelve participants went through an intensive mode of application: chlorhexidine varnish was administrated 3 times within a 1 week period. Saliva samples for determination of SM and LB baseline levels were collected before the first varnish administration followed by sampling 1 and 2 months after the first varnish application. Results: A month after administration the group with high colonization levels (6 persons) exhibited reduction of SM and LB counts when compared with baseline levels. The group with low colonization levels (6 persons) exhibited no significant reduction. Two months after treatment a slight growth of SM and LB counts was recognized. Conclusion: That indicates a time period of chlorhexidine efficiency and a necessary schedule of varnish application. |

| Abstract: |
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of the upper incisors crown trauma and its relationship to orthodontic anomalies, as well as the influence of age, gender and occlusal characteristics. Material and Methods: In this study 580 subjects (302 boys and 278 girls) between 7 and 15 years were randomly selected from several primary schools in the Republic of Croatia. Following characteristics were examined: frequency of incisor trauma, gender, age, skeletal relationship, incisor exposure, interlabial distance, overjet and maximum vertical opening of the mandible. Results: crown trauma was found in the total of 12.4% frequency. It was more frequent in boys (17.8%) than in girls (6.5%). The most frequent type of trauma was a non-complicated trauma affecting only the enamel (80%). Conclusions: The trauma frequency was not related to the size of the maximum vertical opening of the mandible, to the type of malocclusion and the overjet. Subjects with greater size of interlabial distance and incisors exposure had shown more risk to upper incisor trauma. |

| Abstract: |
Radiographic assessment of “bone quantity“ is of great value in planning dental treatment and it also has its applications in orthodontics. The aim of this study was to assess the cortical thickness of the lower border of the mandible using linear radiomorphometric indices, and to determine if it is correlated with different age, gender and malocclusion categories in orthodontic pretreatment period of the patients.Seventy seven patients - 30 boys (42.8%) and 47 girls (57.2%), participated in the study. The results of the statistical analysis revealed no signifi cant difference between the right and the left side measurements for mental and antegonial indices (p>0.05). The right gonial index was signifi cantly higher than the left (p<0.05). All linear radiomorphometric indices increased with age. The cortical thickness at the angle of the mandible demonstrated the highest value in Class III malocclusion group (p<0.01). Based on the results of this study, assessment of linear radiomorphometric indices could be clinically valuable for the evaluation of the growth and development of the mandible and for assessing results of orthodontic treatment. |

| Abstract: |
The object of the study was to determine morphologic characteristics in subjects with skeletal open bite and increased mandibular angle; correlation between the depth of the over bite and values of the size of the angle of the mandibular base, maxillary base and intermaxillary angle; correlation between the depth of the over bite with values of anterior and posterior facial height and dentoalveolar compensatory mechanism in vertical type growth. The sample consisted of 77 laterolateral cephalograms of subjects with skeletal open bite of both genders, aged from 13 to 18 years. It was determined that 49.4% of the subjects had open bite, while 50.6% of the subjects were compensated, i.e. 41.5% had normal over bite and 9.1% deep bite. |

| Abstract: |
The object of the study was to determine the size of the mandibular angle, height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus, and to compare the obtained results, depending on the type of skeletal orthodontic anomaly, age and gender of the subject. Seventy-seven subjects participated in the study (30 male and 47 female) with diagnosed anomalies of open bite, mandibular prognathism and Class II/2 malocclusion, classified into three age groups. The following variables were measured on a laterolateral cephalometric radiograph: mandibular angle, height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus. The mandibular angle was smallest in the subjects with over bite (average 123°), largest in patients with open bite (average 135°) and in subjects with progeny it amounted to an average 130°. Statistically significant difference was found between the size of the mandibular angle and the type of anomaly (p<0.05). Statistically significant difference was determined between linear skeletal variables and age groups (p<0.05). With regard to the values of the height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus statistically significant difference was found between the first age group (6-12 years) and the third age group (16-18 years) (p<0.05). In the male subjects values for linear skeletal variables were higher than the same variables measured in female subjects, although the difference was not statistically significant. |

| Abstract: |
Choosing the method of remnant composite removal after debonding is a problem, because most techniques cause deep scratches on the enamel surface. The purpose of this study was to determine the method that causes the least damage to the enamel. The study was carried out on a sample of 30 premolars. After brackets had been bonded and debonded, using the same procedure, the samples were divided at random into three groups. The composite remnants in the first group were removed using the Band Driver, in the second group using a tungsten carbide bur and in the third group using composite removing pliers. The samples were analysed using a light stereomicroscope (Olympus). The photomicrographs were graded and the SRI (Surface Roughness Index) “calculated”. The best enamel surface appearance was determined after using the tungsten carbide bur, which is considered the method which causes the least damage to the enamel surface. |

MALOCCLUSION PROGNATHISM |
| Abstract: |
Dento-alveolar adaptation in subjects with mandibular prognathism is the reason of clinical findings of almost normal occlusal and dental relationships between maxilla and mandible, despite of sagittal jaw. The purpose of this study was to obtain: the most significant characteristics of patients with mandibular prognathism; to find which variables quantitatively describe dento-alveolar adaptation and which of the used parameters have the most influence on achieving the normal relationship between the upper and the lower jaw as well to find the correlation between defining cephalometric variables. A sample of 62 cephalograms of subjects with mandibular prognathism both sexes, average age 18.7 years were analyzed. Cephalograms of eugnathic subjects were served as control. Eight dento-alveolar variables were observed: SNA, SNB, ANB, GIBG, DIBD, IIK, LA and LB, and statistical analysis were performed. As compared to eugnatic patients, all variables were significantly different, except SNA. The most signifficant decrease was found in the variable presenting the inclination of lower incisors in the relation to the mandibular base (DIBD), meaning that patients with mandibular prognathism have more retruded lower incisors which is a result of dento-alveolar adaptation. Significant correlations were found between variables SNB and ANB, DIBD and LB, and ANB and LB. |

| Abstract: |
Cytotoxicity is in direct correlation to the level of ion release, with non-precious alloys having higher ion release than that of precious alloys. The most often used non-precious dental alloy is Ni-Cr alloy. The aim of the investigation was to determine the type and quantity of ions released from Ni-Cr alloy (Wiron 99(r), Bego, Germany), in acid solutions with different pH values, and to determine the influence of the type of acid solution, its pH value, and duration of interaction on ion release. The overall sample consisted of 180 pieces ofNi-Cr alloy, 60 samples submerged in each of three different solutions (buffered phosphate solutions pH 3.5 and pH6, and lactic acid solution pH 3.5). Quantity of ion release was measured on solution samples taken at 10 different time intervals by means of the ICP-AES method. Average release of Ni ions in lactic acid solution was432.42 μg/L, while the highest average Ni+ ions release of 541.67μg/L was measured in buffered phosphate solution pH 6.0. MANOVA demonstrated significant influence of the type of solution on Ni ion release (p<0.01), while the time of exposure was not a significant factor (p=0.23). Zn ions demonstrated the lowest average ion release (88.95 μg/L, phosphate solution pH 3.5). Statisticallysignificant influence of the type of solution and pH value on ion release was determined, except for chromium ions (p<0.05). Dentobacterial plaque acidity is sufficient to start corrosion of Ni-Cr dental alloys. |

| Abstract: |
Significant alterations of the cranio-orofacial region have been observed in subjects with Down’s syndrome. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of particular orthodontic malocclusion in these subjects. A group of 112 subjects with cytogenetically confirmed diagnosis of Down’s syndrome was examined. All the subjects underwent a complete dental examination. The following classification was used to determine malocclusion of crowding, premature tooth loss, class III malocclusion, open bite, class II division 2 malocclusion, unilateral cross bite and bilateral cross bite. Clipper language programs were designed for data processing. Malocclusion was found in 92% of the subjects. Class III malocclusion was most frequently observed (43.8%). Crowding and unilateral cross bite were found in 15% of the subjects respectively. Bilateral cross bite was present in 5.4% of the subjects. Premature tooth loss was observed in only 1% of the subjects whereas class II division 2 malocclusion was not recorded in any of the subjects examined. |

| Abstract: |
The method of finite elements has proved to be successful for analysis of the transmission of forces and stress in biological systems. The aim of this investigation was to determine differences in the distribution of stress and deformation, depending on different levels of application of simple horizontal orally directed forces on the labial surface of the tooth using a mathematical model of the tooth, with equivalent supportive structures, constructed means of the finite element method. An upper canine, extracted for periodontal reasons, was used as a pattern for construction of the model. A three-dimensional model was obtained consisting of 4000 elements in the shape of a hexahedron and 2367 nodes, totalling 7101 grades of freedom. Horizontal orally directed 1 N force, was applied to the model on five different levels of the tooth crown, vertically on its longitudinal axis. Deformation and stress intensity were observed for all the applied forces and equivalent stress calculated, according to the energetic theory of strength (Huber-Mises- Hencky theory). |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to determine the mean values and standard deviations of variables that evaluate the inclination and position of incisors in patients with Angle Class II/1 and Class II/2; to determine the statistical significance between investigated variables among groups; and to point out the most significant variable for evaluating the difference between these Angle Classes. The sample consisted of 38 radiographs of patients with Angle Class II/1, and 35 radiographs of patients with Class II/2. The analysis comprised 10 variables: 1 : sp-pm, 1 : m-go, 1 : 1, Is : n-ss, Ii : n-sm, 1 : n-s, Is : A-Pog, Ii : A-Pog , 1 : n-A (°), 1: n-B (°). Means and standard deviations were determined for all variables, and Student t-test were performed to test the differences between investigated groups. It could be concluded that there is significant difference between all investigated variables between subjects with Angle Class II/1 and Class II/2 except for the variable Ii:n-sm. The main dentoalveolar characteristics of subjects with Angle Class II/1 are protrusion of upper and lower incisors in relation to their skeletal base, and protrusion of upper incisors in relation to the anterior cranial base, while Class II/2 patients exhibited retrusion of upper incisors in relation to the basal bone and to the anterior cranial base. |

| Abstract: |
The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and extent of dentoalveolar compensation in subjects with disharmonious vertical jaw base relationships, in relation to subjects with normal occlusion. The study was performed on 37 lateral cephalograms of patients with open bite and 35 of patients with normal occlusion, aged 15 to 18 years. Each cephalogram was traced twice by two authors. The cephalometric analyses were performed by linear and angular measurements. The angular cephalometric variables were: n-s-gn, sp-pm:m-go, m-go-ar, the sum of the posterior angles according to Bjork (1947, 1954,1966,1972),1:sp-pm and 1:m-go. Linear cephalometric variables: oi, om oi/om, ui, um and ui/um were analysed using the methods of Korkhaus (1959). Statistical data analysis included descriptive statistics, method error, t-test and Pearson(s correlation coefficient for association between variables. Significant differences (p < 0.001) between the samples were found in all investigated variables except 1:sp-pm, oi/om and um. Retrusion of the lower incisors was found, indicating dentoalveolar adaptation to the present posterior rotation of the mandible. Inclination of the upper incisors in relation to the base of the maxilla was significantly negative correlated with the variable n-s-gn, and slightly negatively by correlated with the variable sp:pmm-go. The variables of the height of the upper and lower jaws (oi, om, ui, um) were significantly correlated. A significiant negative correlation was found between variables um and m-go-ar. The correlation between variable um and Bjork’s polygon was slightly negative. The variable ui showed slight negative correlation with the variable m-go-ar. Such a relationship is the result of compensatory retrusion of the lower incisors and a steep mandibular plane. |
