GOLD ALLOYS HARDNESS POROSITY |
Abstract: |
Composition and laboratory procedures have the greatest infl uence on the microstructure, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of dental casts. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the metallographic properties of high gold-based dental castings, Dentor S, and low gold-based dental castings, Midor S, used for the same fixed prostehtic indication. Material and methods: Samples were centrifugally cast in a phosphate-bonded investment and cooled at room temperature. The microstructure was analyzed and photographed with light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The grain size and the percentage porosity were evaluated. The Vickers microhardness was tested. T-test for independent samples (α=0.05) was used for statistical analysis. Results: Micrographs showed difference in microstructure, homogeneity and grain size. Average grain size number according to ASTM112/96 of Dentor S (7.72±0.23) was signifi cantly greater comparing with Midor S (6.26±0.19) castings. Percentage porosity of castings was calculated from average impurities and defects, where Dentor S (0.62%±0,24%) was signifi cantly more porous than Midor S (0.49%±0.19%). Vickers microhardness of Midor S castings (HV0.1=169.98±10.61) was signifi cantly greater then those of Dentor S castings (HV0.1=157.58±15.42). Conclusion: It can be concluded that composition, under the same laboratory procedures, has a critical infl uence on microstructure and microhardness of conventional gold-based castings. To ensure functional and technical durability of restoration, selection of the alloy should be based on its composition and mechanical properties as on the patient’s bite forces. |

DENTAL ALLOYS CHROMIUM ALLOYS DENTAL SOLDERING |
Abstract: |
Cobalt-chromium alloys are used as standard restorative material in prosthodontics. Some errors in laboratory procedure or breaks of metallic parts during functional period must be repaired. The purpose of this study was to compare joint quality, obtained by different thermal techniques on Co-Cr as cast alloy. Three samples (32x 10 x 1,5 mm) of each alloy were cut and joined by soldering, laser and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. All samples were I-shaped. The connested surfaces were analysed by microscope, under 50 - 200 X magnification. From the macroscopic view, soldering of all specimens was successful. On the welded samples, either by laser or by TIG welding, overlapping of welding spots was insufficient, cracks and porosity were present. There is a need for proper handling and optimization of all parameters (impulse duration, voltage and power) for each applied method and for analysed alloys. It could be concluded that macroscopic analysis of the quality of joint, done by technician, is one of the aspects to predict the functional durability of prosthetic construction. |

DENTAL RESTORATION WEAR DENTAL MATERIALS CERAMICS POLYMERS |
Abstract: |
Knowledge of wear characteristics of esthetic prosthetic materials is essential in everyday dental practice. To establish a new, original, method and produce a device for examining wear characteristics of constructive prosthetic materials, to assess the wear characteristics of different esthetic prosthetic materials and to examine the relationship in a wear pair: natural tooth - prosthetic material. The study was performed on a modified device Taber abraser on samples of six different esthetic prosthetic materials. The wear is smallest for samples of alumina ceramics (Creation and d.Sign), and greatest for polymer (Chromasit) and ceromer material (Targis). The smallest wear factors were established for alumina ceramics as well. The study has resulted in the development of a new method and new device for examining the wear characteristics of prosthetic materials. |

DENTAL RESTORATION WEAR CERAMICS POLYMERS |
Abstract: |
Friction and wear occur due to the contact of surfaces which are more or less rough. During abrasive wear the extrusion of material occurs, caused by hard particles which apply pressure toward the surface or slide along it (three-body abrasive wear) or by hard protrusions (two-body abrasive wear). Because of demands to provide a satisfactory aesthetic mastication surface the clinician is faced with the problem of the choice of material for veneering. The article describes a method for testing abrasive wear of pairs of tooth-prosthetic material for veneering. In order to test the method two different prosthetic veneering materials were tested (polymer material SR Chromasit, Ivoclar and Clay ceramic, Sign-Ivoclar) on a modified Taber abraser, in dry conditions. Significant differences were determined in the wear scars on specimens of the tested materials. The method enables the testing of specimens of different materials mutually or in a pair with a natural tooth, under different loading and with or without a third body (food or artificial saliva), which in clinical practice represents valuable data during the choice of the type of construction and veneering material. |

GOLD ALLOYS CERAMICS |
Abstract: |
The aim of the study was to determine whether the rate of cooling induced structural changes in a high-gold alloy, and whether these changes modified the bond strength between the gold alloy and hydrothermal ceramic. Before ceramic firing, the casts were submitted to fast (water), normal (air) or slow (in the furnace) cooling. Three-point bending test was used in a total of 15 specimens of defined dimensions. The ultimate force at which ceramic detachment from the metal surface occurred and bending strength were determined. The values of coefficient (k) and surface (S) as factors in the assessment of bond quality were calculated. Photographs of the specimen microstructure were made and values of the microhardness of both materials determined. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed no statistically significant difference in bond strength among the three types of specimens, suggesting that the mode of alloy cooling had no substantial effect either on the microstructure of the high-gold alloy or on the quality of bond between the gold alloy and hydrothermal ceramic. |
