| Abstract: |
After standardisation of radiographic technique during the 1930s the importance of soft tissues were of secondary importance and dentoskeletal relations became the decisive factor in facial analysis. However, at the beginning the 1960s it was observed that the relation between soft tissues and skeletal structures could differ considerably. The many investigations engaged in the psychological aspect of malocclusion indicated that the patient should not be treated exclusively in accordance with rigid dentoskeletal standards. More recently, when planning therapy, orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons increasingly consider the soft tissues and rely more on the clinical condition than on cephalometric analysis, in view of the fact that exclusive reliance on cephalometric analysis can occasionally lead to an undesired facial appearance. Through a review of the literature the investigations of authors has been presented who have been engaged in the study and analysis of soft tissues, influence of orthodontic treatment on soft tissues and changes in soft tissues which occur as a result of growth and development. |

| Abstract: |
The object of the investigation was to determine the difference in thickness of the soft tissue in subjects with class I and class II/1, by means of horizontal linear variables on laterolateral radiographs, and to determine the differences in the aforementioned variables with regard to sex. Fifty-six laterolateral radiographs of 12-year-old subjects were used for the investigation, out of which 30 with class I (16 boys and 14 girls) and 26 with class II/1 (11 boys and 15 girls). Measurement of the thickness of the soft tissues was performed by means of five horizontal parameters, and the values obtained were statistically analysed by means of Student t-test. Statistical analysis showed that between the sexes in class I the difference existed in landmark A’ and in class II/1 the difference existed in landmark Li. Analysis of boys between classes I and II/1 also showed a difference in landmark A’. Analysis of girls between classes I and II/1 showed a difference in landmark Ls. The total analysis of classes I and II/1, regardless of sex, showed difference in landmarks A’ and Ls. |

| Abstract: |
In this paper the bond strength of the bracket and tooth surface is defined with regard to suitability for clinical practice and different factors described which could have an effect on it. As moisture is the most frequent cause of debonding of the bracket, its effect is discussed on new adhesive systems: conventional, hydrophilic and self-etching. The bond strength of certain systems is compared in dry conditions and under the influence of water and saliva applied to the surface of the enamel during different phases of bracket bonding in in vitro conditions. Their efficacy is then compared in clinical conditions. The specificity of contamination by saliva and blood and the effect of blood on bond strength when using different systems are pointed out. |

| Abstract: |
Modern dentistry, as a part of the complete therapy plan, includes the whole of the patient’s face. A photograph provides important visual reference for monitoring growth and developmental changes, providing the patient with a view of the changes and providing the therapist with credible visual material for teaching and research. The first component to consider is the technical aspect of photography. However, documentation of the treatment with pre-treatment and post-treatment photographs can be misleading if the features on one or both photographs are distorted. In this article the authors present the variables for frontal and profile facial photographs that should be understood and controlled if accurate reproduction is desired, such as: lens selection, camera position, subject distance and head position. Consequently numerous frontal and lateral photographs were taken with different head and camera positions in order to show their different contributions to the final picture. Using easily recognised facial landmarks, dental photographers can standardise frontal and lateral portraits for more consistent comparison, and by standardisation they could become valuable additions to clinical charts/records. |

The aim of the study was to define the difference of the lip position on lateral cephalograms of subjects with class I and II/1 according to Ricketts and Burstone defining the differences of the variables according to sex. The sample comprised of 57 lateral cephalograms of twelve years old boys and girls. Using measured variables statistic analysis showed following conclusions: Angle class I didn’t show any differences between females and males; class II/1 did show the differences according to sex; analysing boys between class I and II/1 differences in position of upper and lower lip are present; analysing girls between class I and II/1 differences in position of upper and lower lip are not present; comparison between classes without sex separations showes differences in position of upper lip according to both lines. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the amount of remaining gutta-percha and cement on dentine walls of the root canal after retreatment with three different gutta-percha solvents: eucalyptus oil, halothane and orange oil. Seventy one-rooted teeth were instrumented by “step-back” technique and filled with gutta-percha and Diaket cement using a cold lateral condensation technique. After 180 days storing in saline solution the samples were divided into three groups. Retreatment was done by hand instruments with the addition of solvent. The procedure was considered finished when there were not obvious traces of guttapercha and cement on the instrument or paper point. The teeth were split and photographed by camera mounted on a stereomicroscope. The area of remaining gutta-percha and cement was calculated by computer program “ISSA”. The greatest amount of remaining root canal filling was found after retreatment with orange oil (3.85 ±3.15 mm2), followed by halothane (3.72 ±2.52 mm2), and the best result was achieved with eucalyptus oil (2.82 ±1.31 mm2), but without statistical significance. |

| Abstract: |
Choosing the method of remnant composite removal after debonding is a problem, because most techniques cause deep scratches on the enamel surface. The purpose of this study was to determine the method that causes the least damage to the enamel. The study was carried out on a sample of 30 premolars. After brackets had been bonded and debonded, using the same procedure, the samples were divided at random into three groups. The composite remnants in the first group were removed using the Band Driver, in the second group using a tungsten carbide bur and in the third group using composite removing pliers. The samples were analysed using a light stereomicroscope (Olympus). The photomicrographs were graded and the SRI (Surface Roughness Index) “calculated”. The best enamel surface appearance was determined after using the tungsten carbide bur, which is considered the method which causes the least damage to the enamel surface. |

| Abstract: |
The method of finite elements has proved to be successful for analysis of the transmission of forces and stress in biological systems. The aim of this investigation was to determine differences in the distribution of stress and deformation, depending on different levels of application of simple horizontal orally directed forces on the labial surface of the tooth using a mathematical model of the tooth, with equivalent supportive structures, constructed means of the finite element method. An upper canine, extracted for periodontal reasons, was used as a pattern for construction of the model. A three-dimensional model was obtained consisting of 4000 elements in the shape of a hexahedron and 2367 nodes, totalling 7101 grades of freedom. Horizontal orally directed 1 N force, was applied to the model on five different levels of the tooth crown, vertically on its longitudinal axis. Deformation and stress intensity were observed for all the applied forces and equivalent stress calculated, according to the energetic theory of strength (Huber-Mises- Hencky theory). |

The study was performed in 30 subjects with class II/1 and 30 subjects with class II/2 anomalies. The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which class II anomalies influenced individual craniometric and gnathometric dimensions as well as to determine whether there were any significant differences between the two subgroups. Craniometric dimensions were measured in each subject by means of standard measuring devices, while gnathometric analysis was carried out on plaster casts of their dental arches. Statistical processing was performed on an IBM PC-AT computer, with a SPSS/PC program support. The study results indicated the maxillomandibular and craniofacial growth to follow a specific pattern as early as in the deciduous dentition in subjects with class II anomalies. Differences between class II subgroups manifested in the range of the following parameters: all transversal craniometric dimensions were greater in class II/2, which was statistically significant in case of Eu-Eu dimension; height of the maxillary part of the face was significantly greater in class II/2; horizontal incisal step was significantly greater in class II/1; although all transversal dimensions of dental arches were considerably greater in class II/2, the differences were not statistically significant; the upper and lower dental arches were longer in class II/1 and II/2, respectively. |

| Abstract: |
Actuality of gnathometric measurements by means of plaster casts persisting to the present days is stressed and the major research of the kind in twins mentioned. The study included 96 pairs of twins of both sexes (36 monozygotic and 60 dizygotic). Both qualitative and quantitative variables were evaluated and the results computer-processed. For most parameters evaluated, statistical processing revealed a markedly higher compatibility in monozygotes than in dizygotes. This held particularly true for types and severity of anomalies as well as for all qualitative variables, with the exception of over bite, overjet, class and class severity. The maxilla-related variables were shown to be highly genetically determined, which might be explained by the dynamics of mandibular movements and, possibly, a stronger effect of external factors on its growth and development. |

| Abstract: |
The examination of the dynamics of the changes in sagittal, vertical and transversal occlusal relationship has been carried out on the sample of the 66 examinees of the both sexes. The children were examined for the first time at the age of 3.7 years, the again three times repeatedly (within a year) during the first period of the change of teeth. The occlusal changes were registered on the plaster models using the regular standard equipment. The results of the examination of the 4 gnathometric variables (class, overjet, overbite and the transversal occlusal relationship) have demonstrated the following: in 50% examinees the class remained unchanged; the total number of the examinees with class II as well as with uneven occlusal relationship, in the right and left quadrant have increased visibly; the early findings of class II have demonstrated very high stability; the inclination toward the increase of the overjet has been higher in the relation to the reduction; somewhat greater number has been recorded in the group on the overjet above 3 mm; overbite in the major part of the examinees has become deeper; the change from the open, tete a tete, minimal bite to the normal and deep bite has been recorded; the transversal occlusal relationship have remained unchanged in 60% of the cases; the frequency of the new transversal disarrangement in the mixed dentition has been three times higher in the relation to the earlier findings; also the cases of the spontaneous correction of the transversal disarrangement in the deciduous dentition have been recorded. |

| Abstract: |
Analysis of growth dynamics of the four main craniofacial dimensions at the transition point from primary into mixed dentition was performed in order to better determine the effect of individual orthodontic anomalies starting to manifest at that time, on the direction and extent of the alterations observed. A sample consisting of 73 children aged 3.5-5.5 years, free of any overt symptoms of orthodontic anomalies, were re-examined at the age of 6.5-8.5 years and divided into groups according to orthodontic findings then obtained. Mean values (and their differences) of the defined parameters obtained on the first and second measurement were analyzed, both for the sample in total and separately, according to the orthodontic findings in mixed dentition. Based on this data, specific relationships between alterations in each craniofacial dimension and maxillary morphology, specific for particular anomaly, were determined. In the group free of growth dynamics anomalies, both facial and both cranial parameters were almost identical. More or less expressed alterations of a single facial or cranial parameter in dysgnathic subjects may have been related to oral symptoms of the respective anomaly. At the same time, results obtained in the study suggested the size of the four main craniofacial dimensions to differ as early as in primary dentition, and become grouped, depending on the development of future orthodontic anomaly. |

In introductory remarks the most important biomechanical principles, which are relevant for the research, and conditions which must be satisfied presented in intraoral measuring of orthodontic forces were pointed out. First the aim of the research was defined, and then the investigation of mechanical properties of acrylics as a material for orthodontic appliances were carried out. The type of strain gauges, bonds and measuring system configurations, as well as measuring amplifiers and recording instruments were discussed. Some of measuring sensors, their principles and applicability were discussed. The calibration apparatus was modified for the sensor developed, and the calibration results were analysed by means of statistical methods (linear regression). The behaviour of all used sensors were found to be linear, which enables their application and reduces the measuring results interpretation. |

| Abstract: |
The frequency of basal cranial and facial forms, and of craniofacial indices, was analyzed to obtain some additional information on the craniofacial growth during a dynamic interval of the conversion of primary into mixed dentition. A sample of 72 children aged 3.5-5.5 years, free of any symptoms of orthodontic anomalies, were re-evaluated at the age of 6.5-8.5 years. The children were divided into groups according to anomalies possibly present on the second examination. Analysis of the subject distribution into cranial and facial forms revealed slight alterations during the period of observation. Therefore, analysis of the magnitude and frequency of index alterations was also included in the study. These analyses led to a conclusion that changes in the craniofacial form were quite frequently present but their intensity was too low for a subject to be allocated to the other basal group. A relationship between the craniofacial form alteration and maxillary morphology specific for particular anomaly could also be discerned. Thus, alterations in each individual dimension included in the indices, occurring during the mentioned interval, should be analyzed to shed more light upon the problem. |
