Abstract: |
Carious lesions, periodontal disease and occlusal anomalies together with their complications represent three predominant problems in dental practice. All these findings have been evaluated on the sculls of persons who lived in various periods of time. The aim of this study was to determine findings on the sculls of Krapina Neanderthalpeople and also on people from the first, tenth and twentieth century. The sculls of Krapina Neanderthal people are stored in the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb. The sculls from the people of the first and tenth century are stored in the Provincial Museum in Sarajevo and sculls from the twentieth century are stored in theInstitute for Anatomy in the School of Medicine in Sarajevo. On the parts of the sculls of Krapina Neanderthal people occlusion could not be determined, but the status of teeth and alveolar bone was objectively evaluated with regard to the carious lesions and periodontal disease. Therefore, all the measurements in every group out of the total four, was performed with regard to the carious lesionsand periodontal disease. Alveolar bone status was determined according to the TCH (Tooth-Cervical-Height Index). On the 281 Krapina Neanderthal teeth no carious lesions were found whereas resorptive changes in the infra and intraalveolar pockets were noticed. Therefore, periodontal disease has been present for longer than caries. The prevalence of carious lesions continously progressesfrom the first, through tenth untill the twentieth century. |

Abstract: |
Resorbable and non-resorbable membranes are used in implantology and periodontology for guided bone regeneration. This paper shows experience that has been gained from using non-resorbable titanium non-perforated membrane. In case of large bone defects with intention to place an implant “Paraplant 2000” we simultaneouslyuse titanium membrane for building up bone volume immediately after positioning implant into the defect. Fixation of titanium membrane has been performed with “Currasan” fixation set. In the processed and presented cases we have determined significant volume of bone regeneration after 75 days which validate application of titanium membrane. |

Abstract: |
The aim of this prospective study was to record the presence of Candida albicans yeast in a geriatric population, and to compare the results between denture wearers and non-wearers, in order to evaluate the role of dentures as a factor influencing Candida growth. We performed an oral examination on 217 institutionalized elderly people living in the hospice "Sv. Josip" in Zagreb, recorded dataregarding oral health and collected detailed information on denture wearing status. Furthermore, we performed oral smears for Candidacultures, cultivated on Sabouraud's dextrose agar (“Emmon's”) at 37°C for 48 hrs and counted the Candida colonies. Collected data were stored in the database created for this purpose in "Microsoft Access 2000". The number of Candida colonies from denture wearers andnon-wearers were compared (Man-Whitney U test, p<0.05), and the obtained results are discussed. |

Abstract: |
In 28 young, healthy individuals the quantity of salivary peroxidase was determined with the aim of evaluating normal ranges for salivary peroxidase, to determine whether any differences in SP values between unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva exist and to find any possible differences between sexes. We can conclude that no statistically significant differences between salivary peroxidase values in unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva were found. No statistically significant differences were found between female and male individuals in salivary peroxidase values, either in unstimulated or stimulated whole saliva. |

Abstract: |
Recent studies suggest a connection between burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and the quantitiy and quality of saliva. The aim of our study was to determine quantities of salivary immunoglobulin A (sIgA), lysozyme and magnesium in unstimulated and stimulated saliva of patients with burning mouth syndrome and xerostomia. Salivary samples were obtained by sialometry. Salivary immunoglobulin A was determined by radial immunodiffusion according to Manzini, lysozyme levels were obtained according to Osserman and Lowlor, and magnesium was determined using atomic absorbance spectrophotometry. Levels of sIgA were decreased in stimulated whole saliva of patients with BMS and xerostomia when compared to those in unstimulated saliva (p<0.001). Lysozyme levels were also lower in stimulated whole saliva in such patients when compared to the levels in unstimulated saliva (p<0.001). Magnesium levels remain unchanged with regard to the salivary stimulation. The results of our study indicate that the quantity and quality of saliva could have an impact on symptoms of burning mouth syndrome. |

Abstract: |
All oral lichen ruber (OLR) cases seen at the Department of Oral Medicine, School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb, from January 1, 1995 to December 31, 1998, were included in this retrospective study. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of Candida (C. albicans) infection and burning mouth syndrome (BMS) in OLR patients. The mean age of the examined men and women was 53 and 55 years, respectively. In women, the prevalence of OLR was twice as high as in men (66.6% : 33.3%). OLR most commonly occured between the age of 40 and 60 years. The most frequent type of OLR was lichen planus (69%). C. albicans was detected in 75 of 174 (43.1%) patients, while BMS was present in 62 (35.6%) patients. There were 39 (22.4%) patients with candidiasis (without BMS), 26 (14.9%) with BMS (without candidiasis), and 36 (20.7%) with both candidiasis and BMS. The high prevalence of C. albicans infection and BMS concurrence indicates to the need for simultaneous treatment of both entities. |
