| Abstract: |
The aim of this investigation was to obtain data on the incidence of clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction in the Rijeka population and to ascertain possible mutual correlation between particular signs and symptoms. The investigation included 408 subjects, 164 men and 242 women aged 18-85 years. After completing a questionnaire a clinical examination was performed of all subjects. The following frequency of particular signs and symptoms were determined:• Bruxism during the night in 17% women and 14% men.• Bruxism during the day in 34% women and 30% men.• Sounds in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) during movementin 26% women and 25% men.• Headaches more often than once in a month in 34% womenand 19% men. Of the patients with bruxism 37% experience headaches more frequently than once in a month, 35% pain in neck muscles and 33% sounds in the TMJ during mandibular movement.Of the patients without bruxism 41% experience headaches, 28% pain in neck muscles and 24% sounds in the TMJ.For statistical analysis χ2 test and odds ratio (OR) were used. Data were analysed by computer programmes Med Calc and Statistics for Windows. Statistically significant difference was found for the frequency of certain signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) in the group of women. No statistically significant difference was found between oral parafunction and signs and symptoms of TMD.It can be concluded that day and night bruxism caused increased pain in the neck muscles and that the increased occurrence of sounds in the TMJ during mandibular movement was more frequent in women, although this was not statistically significant. |

| Abstract: |
A seven year old male patient was referred by his dentist to a specialist in dental prothetics with a diagnosis of oligodontia. Examination of the orthopantomogram showed germs of only eight teeth. No teeth were present in the oral cavity. The first permanent molars had been esctracted because of caries. From the case history and a clinical examination, it was established that the boy had craniofacial dysmorphosis/ dysostosis and hypertelorizm with lower positioned and poorly formed ears. He had diagnosis of thickeningof the right ventriculus. Kariotype normal. Also presented adactyly of digits II and III manus et pedis, clinodactyly of digit I, and syndactyly of digits IV and V was surgically treated. By examining the oral cavity, angulus infectiosus oris was diagnosed caused by lowered vertical dimension of occlusion and candidiasis lingue, and consequently the boy was referred to an oral pathologist for appropriate therapy. Special attention is required when fabricating a complete denture in a child's mouth in orded not to compromeany prosthetic principle. Thus, we were faced with several problems including how to find impression trays of adequate size, and how to explain to the patient the procedure of functional movements, achievement of rest position, and the artificial teeth selection.Because of the small and narrow dental arches we decided for the smallest size of artificial teeth (D28) and reduced occlusion. The artificial teeth were modified and reduced. The second molar took the place of the first molar. With color and shape we tried to imitate deciduous teeth. After insertion of the complete dentures and controlexamination, the patient was given an appointment for making new dentures in six months, because of the growth and development of the maxilla and mandible. |

| Abstract: |
A technique of etching was employed in 50 patients for bridge retention. The Rexillium III (Jenevie Industries, Wallingford Co.) alloy and Comspan bond (L. D. Caulk Co., Milford Del.) were used. Therapeutic results obtained with adhesive (etched) bridges depend on a variety of factor: careful and accurate indication, precise work plan, minimal preparation of the supporting tooth, appropriate method of retention of the attachment metal portion, and the type of bond and of dental alloy. Clinical application of bond cast bridges has a quite good prognosis. A prolonged period of observation should provide more data on the behavior of such appliances in the oral cavity and allow us evaluations. |
