FORENSIC DENTISTRY AGE DETERMINATION BY TEETH TOOTH ATTRITION |
| Abstract: |
Objectives: Estimaiting the dental age of the adult human remains can often be of great importance in forensic identifi cation cases, and also provides valuable data in paleodontology. The aim of the present study was to compare chronological age with estimated dental age by the method according to Johanson, published in 1971. Material and Methods: 140 permanent intact teeth without dental fi llings and/or dental cavity were taken. The known age was ranging from 18 to 80 years. The average age was 45 years. For the dental age estimation the method according to Johanson was used. Every tooth was subject to longitudinal section of the midpulpal area in a vestibulo-lingual plane. Six variables were analyzed: secondary dentin, attrition, cementum apposition, root resorption, periodontal recession, and root translucency. The results of the chronological and the estimated age have been statistically compared using Person’s correlation coeffi cient and regression analysis. Results: The results showed strong correlation coeffi cient r=0.85; p<0.001 between chronological and determinated dental age. Age determination on samples of teeth between genders is in signifi cant correlation with known age. Correlation coeffi cient was 0.99 for male, and 0.98 for female samples (p<0.001) Conclusion: The method used in this research is the method of choice for dental age determination on exhumed bodies and skeletal remains for forensic and anthropological analysis in Croatia. |

AGE DETERMINATION BY TEETH FORENSIC DENTISTRY RADIOGRAPHY, PANORAMIC |
| Abstract: |
Developing teeth are used to assess maturity and estimate age in a number of disciplines, such as pediatric and preventive dentistry, orthodontics, forensic odontology, etc. Aim: The accuracy of different methods has not been systematically investigated within the Croatian population, so the aim of this investigation was to determine the accuracy of two methods; Demirjian’s and Haavikko’s. Material and Methods: Tooth formation was assessed from orthopantomograms (OPGs) belonging to healthy children, patients of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. The sample consisted of 324 children (149 boys, 175 girls, ages 6–16 years). The OPGs were examined and seven mandibular teeth were staged according to Demirjian’s dental maturity scale and according to Haavikko. Descriptive statistics were used together with relation analysis (Spearman correlation) and tests (Lilliefors test for normality of distribution, t-test for significance of Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient, and Mann-Whitney test for testing the differences between boys and girls). Results: Dental age and the difference between dental and actual chronological age was calculated for both methods. Results showed that Demirjian’s method overestimated the age while Haavikko’s method underestimated the age. All data was subjected to both correlation and regression analysis, which showed that both applied methods gave results with significant correlation to the actual age (Demirjian’s method yielded a 0.93 coefficient of correlation, Haavikko’s method yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.89, p<0.05). Conclusion: This study on Croatian children has shown high correlation coefficients for both methods and demonstrated their potential benefit in clinical and scientific use. |

COMPUTERS STUDENTS, DENTAL DISTANCE LEARNING |
| Abstract: |
This research was conducted in order to gain insight into the undergraduate student’s level of computer literacy at the University of Zagreb School of Dental Medicine (UZSDM), and discover the purpose for the use of computers and the internet. The research was conducted on 297 students from all 5 years of the undergraduate program at the UZSMD; 29.3% male and 70.7% female subjects at the average age of 21 years. Each student filled in a questionnaire containing 15 questions, and the results were analysed with the Spearman correlation test and the chi square test. The co-relation between the variable: “recognizing the term “e-learning” and other determined variables was statistically analysed. The results showed that students mostly use computers for up to 2 hrs daily (77%), and the main reason cited for this, in 79.8% of the students was “surfing the net”. The main purpose for using the internet was “searching for information” in 52.8% of the cases and “communication and e-mail reading” in 21%. Of the polled students at UZSDM, 5.2% do not use computers. |

| Abstract: |
Scientific information that is applicable in biomedical practice and the speed of its publication has dramatically increased in the onset of online journals. The aim of this paper is to analyze the use of the e-version of the scientific journal Acta Stomatologica Croatica (ASCRO), accessible at www.ascro.net, during the period from March to November 2006, i. e. its first year of e-publication. For the analysis of the e-journal we used a computer program Webalizer 2.01, authored by Bradford L. Barett. We analyzed the following parameters: number of daily visits, maximal number of daily visits, number of monthly visits, number of unique IP addresses (internet protocol addresses) that have accessed the website, hours of maximal access during the day, distribution of visitors regarding the country of origin, and most read articles. Although the presented results of the life of the ASCRO e-journal are related to the observed time period of only six months, they are promising. The steady rise in the presented data is a sure indicator of the sincere work of the Editorial office, leading to a constant increase in the number of readers. |

AGING AGE DETERMINATION BY TEETH FORENSIC DENTISTRY |
| Abstract: |
Dental age determination in children and adults is an important task in the clinical, forensic and archaeological examinations. The objective of this paper was to compare the reliability of the Demirjian’s and Haavikko’s methods in the determination of chronological age of Croatian children. Dental maturity was studied by the use of 115 panoramic radiographs of Caucasian children of both sexes aged between 4 and 17, from the archives of the School of Dental Medicine and the Dental Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Centre in Zagreb. The median age for both groups was 12 years. Correlation coeffi cient between estimated and real age for the total sample according to Demirjian’s method was 0.96 (p<0,001), while for Haavikko’s method it was 0.97 (p<0,001). According to the monitored methods, the correlation coeffi cients for both sexes were high and statistically signifi cant. Results of this research show the possibility for use of both methods in clinical and forensic cases in Croatia. |

| Abstract: |
The purpose of this study was first to analyse dental disease in the early medieval population from Bijelo Brdo in East Slavonia, Croatia, and second to determine the dietary pattern with regard to dental diseases.Occlusal surface wear, caries and antemortem tooth loss were studied in the pemanent dentition of 81 skulls from an early medieval cemetery (10 - 11th century) from Bijelo Brdo. After cleaning, the material was stored in Archeological Museum in Zagreb. A total of 979permanent teeth were examined. The number of carious teeth and number of root surfaces involved in caries were recorded for computer analysis.Examined teeth showed moderate occlusal surface wear. The overall caries prevalence was 9.5% of the present teeth. The teeth attacked by caries were chiefly molars, followed by premolars, with a low rate of attack in canines and incisors. A primitive pattern of caries wasrecorded, whereby most cavities ocurred in the interdental space, near the cemento-enamel junction. Skeletal root caries index (SRCI) was 0.9. Ante-mortem tooth loss was 6.7%. Average number of teeth lost before death was 1.22. The first molar was the most frequently lost tooth.Moderate occlusal surface wear, low SRCI and a pattern of caries involving approximal rather than occlusal surface suggest that consumed food was no so coarse and contained much soluble material., that its debris could enter the approximal area close to the contact point. These data are consistent with archeological and historical data wich characterize the Bijelo Brdo population as intensely agricultural with a high comsumption of cereals. |

| Abstract: |
Dens invaginatus is a developmental variation thought to arise as a result of invainatio in the surface of the tooth crown before calcification has occurred. The authors described two cases of dens invaginatus accompanied by different periapical complications in children, as wel as the therapy methods used. The two children were between the ages of 12 and 16 years. The type of dens invaginatus was classified according to Schulze and Brand. Both cases had dens invaginatus on their permanent teeth in the maxilla. The complications occurred while the teeth were growing, and they were accompanied by swelling in the region of the dens invaginatus. In Case 1, pulp extripation was accompanied by profuse pulp chamber bleeding. Intraradicular instrumentation was adapted to conform with the existent morphological deviation of the endodontic space. The root canal was temporally filled with calcium hydroxide for a period of 10 days. The pain disappeared on the first day and the swelling gradually reduced. On the tenth day, the temporary root filling was replaced, and the root canals were dilled using the lateral condensation with standardized gutta percha points and paste. In Case 2, the clinical examination found fluctuation in the vestibular region. An intraoral incision with drainage was performed and antibiotic treatment continued. When the odontogenic infection has been controlled, the dens invaginatus tooth was surgically extracted.Pathohistological finding of the periradicular cyst confirmed the diagnosis of a follicular cyst. Given the significant size of the post-surgical bone defect, it required corresponding treatment with Bio-Oss spongiosa block and membrane for GBR.The periapical complications required early diagnostic and endodontic treatment to prevent further difficulties at a later stage. |

| Abstract: |
This paper reports the results of dental identification of 1200 human remains exhumed from mass graves in Croatia up to 2000. A total of 989 (82%) victims were positively identified, while 211 (18%) victims remained unidentified. Dental identification based on available dental ante mortem data was achieved in 25% of the cases. Dental identification based on dental charts was achieved in 35%, on x-rays in 15%, on photographs of teeth in 22%, on interviews in 18%, and on dental supports in 10% of the cases. Teeth, in combination with anthropological parameters - age, sex and height as well as with other specific characteristics such as tattoos, personal identificationcards, clothes, jewelry and DNA - were helpful for identification of 64% of victims, but their significance for the identification was not dominant. Only in 11% of the cases identification was achieved by other relevant means of identification and teeth were not used at all. Dental findings that were the most significant for the identificationswere prosthetic appliances in 30% of cases. Dentures were helpful in the identification of only 1% of the cases, while crowns and bridges were helpful in 29% of the cases. Non marked full dentures caused problems in the determination of identification.. |

| Abstract: |
This paper presents a case of dental identification of a carbonized body in a traffic accident with a private vehicle. After the police inspection performed on the spot of the accident, the carbonized bodies were transported to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Criminology at the School of Medicine in Zagreb for indentification and determination of the cause of death. Dental identification was enabled by tracing the dental chart of the Croatian subject who had been a patient of the Dental Polyclinic in Zagreb. The dental chart of the foreign person was not available, which excluded the possibility of teeth comparison method. However identity was confirmed by DNA analysis from the pulp of the dental tissue. |

| Abstract: |
In this paper, the importance of the tooth in identification an unknown person has been demonstrated. The theoretical part shows the difference between genomic and mitochondrial DNA. That difference is the durability and properties which they carry and the value they have in identification. Microanatomy has also been described, possible locations of cells inthe tooth and methods to collect material for DNA extraction. The practical part shows the methods used in particular cases for DNA isolation. Horizontal section through the cervical root is used to collect material for DNA isolation. Genomic DNA , from the material, is extracted by organic phenol-chloroform methods. The results are shown on 1 % agarose gel and photographed by a Polaroid camera. |

Taurodontism represents morphological abnormality of the teeth followed by the enlargement of the elongation of the pulp chamber in vertical direction; and which is connected with: racial traits, some syndromes, or in most cases appears as the consequence of the increased number of X chromosomes. In the study is presented rare case of hypertaurodont maxillary second premolar and surgical admission during the extraction. Since the classical extraction was not possible because of the rooth mass and the alveol wideness, we did the alveotomia. |
