| Abstract: |
Prosthetic solutions on implants are frequent treatment plans that patients accept well. In some states there are dental implant registries that are used as databases for patient information and for different professional and administrative procedures. The connection between a natural tooth and an implant is still a matter of debate, and the reason is the ankylotic connection at the implant versus periodontal ligament that the tooth possesses. These two cases show successful prosthetic reconstruction and patient satisfaction. |

| Abstract: |
Bisphosphonates, drugs that influence bone structure, are used in treatment of a number of bone diseases, from osteoporosis to malignomas with subsequent osteolysis. Recently bisphosphonates have been linked to jaw osteonecrosis. These changes are more frequent in patients receiving parenteral bisphosphonates (zolendronate and pamidronate), while in others, such as alendronate, they are not so frequent. It has been shown that the duration of therapy increases the risk of jaw osteonecrosis.Osteonecrosis of the jaw, as susceptible regions, is explained by the fact that the bone is under constant stress during chewing, as well as under constant invasion with oral microorganisms. It has been suggested that in treating of jaw osteonecrosis one should combine antibiotics with oral surgical procedures. Since the knowledge on this correlation is limited, it has been recommended that patients with increased risk of osteonecrosis should perform preventive measures such as good oral hygiene, adaptation of removable prosthetic devices, restauration of carious lesions and endodontic treatment. Dental examination is necessary before commencing bisphosphonate therapy. We present a case of an elderly male patient with advanced osteonecrosis and subsequent vertebral compression fractures. |

| Abstract: |
Radiographic assessment of “bone quantity“ is of great value in planning dental treatment and it also has its applications in orthodontics. The aim of this study was to assess the cortical thickness of the lower border of the mandible using linear radiomorphometric indices, and to determine if it is correlated with different age, gender and malocclusion categories in orthodontic pretreatment period of the patients.Seventy seven patients - 30 boys (42.8%) and 47 girls (57.2%), participated in the study. The results of the statistical analysis revealed no signifi cant difference between the right and the left side measurements for mental and antegonial indices (p>0.05). The right gonial index was signifi cantly higher than the left (p<0.05). All linear radiomorphometric indices increased with age. The cortical thickness at the angle of the mandible demonstrated the highest value in Class III malocclusion group (p<0.01). Based on the results of this study, assessment of linear radiomorphometric indices could be clinically valuable for the evaluation of the growth and development of the mandible and for assessing results of orthodontic treatment. |

BONE DENSITY SPORTS MEDICINE |
| Abstract: |
The forces of muscular exertion which develop during daily physical exercise stimulate the process of bone formation in the areas of the insertions of the exerted muscles, resulting in the strengthening of bone, in terms of increased mineral component of the bone and increase in its density. The object of this study was to assess the density of mandibular bones in a group of active rowers, compare the measured values with values obtained in a control group and to examine whether there is statistically significant difference in the total sample, depending on the different body mass index of the subjects.Eight active rowers took part in the study and seven subjects in a control group. An orthopantomogram was performed in all subjects and the values of density measured on them were expressed in equivalent thickness of the copper calibration pin.In all points measured from the right and left sides of the angulus mandible mandibular density in rowers was higher than the same in the control group. Furthermore, in all points measured from the right and left side of the angulus mandible mandibular density in the group with higher values of body mass index was higher than the same in the group with lower values of body mass index. No statistically significant difference was recorded (p>0.05).Increased physical activity inevitably leads to thickening of bone structure in the areas of the insertions of the exerted group of muscles and in order to compensate for the effect of the forces of exertion on surrounding tissue. |

The object of the study was to determine the size of the mandibular angle, height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus, and to compare the obtained results, depending on the type of skeletal orthodontic anomaly, age and gender of the subject. Seventy-seven subjects participated in the study (30 male and 47 female) with diagnosed anomalies of open bite, mandibular prognathism and Class II/2 malocclusion, classified into three age groups. The following variables were measured on a laterolateral cephalometric radiograph: mandibular angle, height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus. The mandibular angle was smallest in the subjects with over bite (average 123°), largest in patients with open bite (average 135°) and in subjects with progeny it amounted to an average 130°. Statistically significant difference was found between the size of the mandibular angle and the type of anomaly (p<0.05). Statistically significant difference was determined between linear skeletal variables and age groups (p<0.05). With regard to the values of the height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus statistically significant difference was found between the first age group (6-12 years) and the third age group (16-18 years) (p<0.05). In the male subjects values for linear skeletal variables were higher than the same variables measured in female subjects, although the difference was not statistically significant. |

ALVEOLAR BONE LOSS + etiology DENTURE, COMPLETE + adverse effects |
| Abstract: |
Alveolar bone loss (RRR) is a continuous process following tooth extraction, more pronounced during the first few month after the tooth extraction than later. The RRR in the mandible is twice that of the maxilla during a 1-year period and the mandibular: maxillary resorption ratio increases further to 4:1 after 7 years. The RRR results in reduction of face height and counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. So far, the etiology of RRR has not been elucidated. It has been speculated that both systemic and local factors contribute. However, one of the local factors is daytime or daytime and night time denture wearing. The aim of this study was to analyze the rate of RRR in five different regions of both jaws on lateral cephalograms of 100 complete denture wearers during a one-year period and to compare the rate of RRR in daytime only and daytime + night-time denture wearers. The height of residual ridges was measured on 5 different sites at the delivery of the dentures and a year later using a calibrated grid. The results revealed significant RRR in the one year period (p<0.01), which was 2.5x bigger in the mandible than in the maxilla. Higher rate of RRR was recorded at frontal sites of the maxillary and mandibular residual ridges compared to lateral sites (p<0.01). Night-time denture wearing made no significant influence on the rate of RRR on any of the five examined sites of the maxilla or the mandible (p>0.05). |

Alveolar bone loss (RRR) is a continous process leading to a reduction of the morphological face height and counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. It has been speculated that both systemic and local factors contribute to RRR.The aim of this study was to analyse the rate of RRR in five different regions of both jaws on lateral cephalograms. The rate of RRR was analysed in five different regions of both jaws in lateral cephalograms of 50 complete denture wearers during a one year period and the contribution of some factors to the rate of RRR was also analysed. The height of residual ridges was measured on 5 different sites at the delivery of the dentures and a year later using a calibrated grid. Hierarchic regression analysis was made to reveal the contribution of different factors to RRR.Hierarchic regression analysis was made (the factors included were: body, mass index, gender, age, time of edentulousness, number of previous dentures, night-time denture wearing, period od postmenopause in women, surface of denture bearing area and place of last extraction) and revealed that the only statistically significant factors contributing to RRR was the period od edentolousness and number of previous dentures (p < 0.05).The period of edentulousness and number of previous dentures (p < 0.05) contributed significantly to the rate of RRR. |

| Abstract: |
Success of prosthodontic treatment depends on the state of bone tissue in the jaws and requires a certain amount of bone under the denture to provide stability in function. The aim of the study was to determine whether the bone mineral density (BMD) of the mandible and some linear radiomorphometric indices measured on panoramic radiographs are correlated with different removable denture wearing. 136 removable denture wearers (72 complete removable denture wearers, 64 partial removable denture wearers) participated in this study. All the patients were screened using panoramic radiographs standardized with copper stepwedge. BMD measurements were expressed in equivalents of the actual stepwedge thicknesses. Linear radiomorphometric indices were measured on each panoramic radiograph. Results revealed statistically significant differences in measured indices between complete and removable partial denture wearers (p < 0.05). Statistically significant differences in measured BMD values between different type of the dentures worn were found under the denture bases on the superior border of the mandible (p < 0.05). It seems that the different types of denture loading influences BMD changes as well as the thickness of cortical parts of the mandible. |

| Abstract: |
The healing of bone defects with or without reconstruction today is relatively satisfactory. Large bone defects of the jaw, so far, have been filled with various types of bone implants (autologous, homologous, xenogenic and alloplastic). The best implant will be after implantation in bone defects, would stimulate the formation of bone, form and firm conection with the base and have the characteristics of bone. The investigation included two patients with large bone defects after removal of jaw cysts. To fill the bone defects we used bone substitute Chron OSTM .Chron OSTM is syntetic ß tricalcium phosphate. It is an alloplastic bone implant. Previous investigations showed that Chron OSTM is osteoconductive, resorbable and highly biocompatible with compressive strength similar to the compressive strength of cancellous bone. Results are presented on the basis of clinical followup and X-ray performed preoperativly, postoperativly and after six months. The patients were screened using panoramic X-rays standardised with copper stepwedge. Using microdensitometric method all the measured values were expressed in the equivalents of actual copper stepwedge thickness. |

The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Discorders (RDC/TMD) guidelines, originally developed in the United States, were translated and used to classify TMD patients on physical diagnosis (Axis I) and pain-related disability an psychological status (Axis II) in Croatiana TMD patients. The RDC/TMD Axis I and II findings were compared to those of Swedish , American and Asian TMD patients. One hundred and fifty-gour consecutive patients (117 female and 37 male) referred to the Department of Prosthodontics and Department of Oral Surgery in Zagreb, Croatia, were enrolled in the study. The mean age of the Croatian population was 39 ± 14,5 years. Frequency distributions and descriptive statistics were obtained through the use of SPSS version 10 for Windows (SPSS, Chicago, IL), and chi-square (2-sided) statistical analyses were performed (P < 0,05) to evaluate gender differences.Group I (muscle) disorder was found in 64,9% of the patients; Group II (disc displacement) disorder was found in 31,8% and 27,3% of the patients in the right and left joints, respectively; Group III (arthralgia, arthritis, arthrosis) disorder was found in 21,4% and 26% of the patients in teh right and left joints, respectively. Axis II assessment of psychological status showed that 19,5% of patients yielded severe depression scores and 27,3% yielded high nonspecific physical symptom scores (somatization). Psychosocial dysfunction was observed in 21,4% of patients based on graded chronic pain scores.Axis I and II findings of Croatian TMD patients were generally similar to their Swedich, American and Asian cohorts. In all 4 populations, women of child-bearing age represented the majority of patients. Muscle disorders were the most prevalent type of TMD. A substantial portion of TMD patients were depressed and experienced severe somatization. These rezults suggest that the RDC/RMD guidelines are valuable in helping to classify TMD patients and allowing multicenter and cross-cultural comparison of clinical findings. |

| Abstract: |
There are various different diagnostic and reconstructive procedures that require visualization and analysis of mandibular movements, dental arch relationship and teeth contact outside the patient’s mouth. Therefore, there is an indispensable need for a mechanical device that can provide mandibular movements and different jaw relations. One of the major applications of the articulator is the fixation of jaw relations and to ensure their movements so that diagnostic and reconstructive procedures can be obtained. |

ALVEOLAR BONE LOSS DENTAL ABUTMENTS DENTURE, PARTIAL, REMOVABLE DENTAL PLAQUE INDEX |
| Abstract: |
Loss of interdental alveolar bony septum can be determined directly from a radiograph as the relation between the length of the interdental bony crest of the alveolus to the tooth apex and the distance from the cemento-enamel junction of the tooth to the tooth apex. The aim of this study was to measure the height of the interdental alveolar bone around the abutment and non-abutment teeth in removable partial denture wearers (RPD) on dental panoramic radiographs (DPR) over a period of six months. Twenty RPD patients (5 male, 15 female) participated in the study. The alveolar bone loss measurement was performed on DPRs, using Schei index, on each mandibular abutment and nonabutment tooth on its mesial and distal side, after the RPD delivery and six months later. Recordings of plaque index (PlI) were made at the mid-buccal, mid-palatal, mesio- and disto-palatal surfaces of all abutment and non-abutment teeth in the mandible after the RPD delivery and six months later. The results revealed a decrease in Schei index values, on both abutment and non-abutment teeth, which reached a statistically significant level for distal Schei index values of the abutment teeth and mesial and distal Schei index values of the non abutment teeth (p<0.05) in the 6 month period. There was no statistically significant difference in PlI values between the first and the second measurement (p>0.05). We concluded that the decrease in bone support on both abutment and non-abutment teeth was attributed to the high levels of PlI and probable low level of oral hygiene than to the RPD loading. |

| Abstract: |
The term temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) encompasses a group of disorders of the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joints. Major precipitating factors are occlusal, traumatic, psychosocial and systemic factors. The aim of this investigation was to determine possible altered muscular function in patients with TMD, as well as to determine the need for EMG application in TMD diagnosis. Forty young adults participated in this study: 13 subjects with signs and symptoms of TMD and 27 asymptomatic subjects, sex and age matched. Surface EMG recordings were obtained from left and right anterior temporal muscle, left and right masseter muscle and from left and right digastric muscle in eight mandibular positions. Right side to left side ratio of examined muscles myoelectrical signals in lateral occlusal and maximal lateral positions for the asymptomatic group showed significantly higher activity of the working side anterior temporal muscle (p<0.05). In the group of patients with TMD, regarding the same muscle, statistically significant differences were found only in the left occlusal and left maximal lateral position (p<0.05), at which greater activity was found for the working side temporal muscle. In the same positions of the right side no significant differences in anterior temporal muscle activity were found (p>0.05). Comparison of myoelectrical signals in the position of maximal intercuspation of teeth between the patients and the controls, showed significantly higher activity in right and left masseter muscle at 50% MVC (p<0.05) in the symptomatic group. Results of this investigation showed the presence of altered masticatory muscle activity in TMD patients and confirmed the use of electromyography in TMD diagnosis. |

Metal partial denture framework is a constituent part of each metal partial denture. Its fabrication requires precision of both the technician and the dentist - from the initial phase of planning this prosthetic restoration, during impression taking, making of stone casts, cast duplication, modelling by means of wax patterns, flasking of duplicate casts, heating, glowing and casting of the metal construction, elimination of sprues and sandblasting, until final polishing of the casting and its adjustment on a stone cast and in the patient’s mouth.Sophisticated equipment plays an important part in technological fabrication procedures: robust and strong technical motor, parallelometer, thermostatic bowl for the duplication material, sandblasting device, device for mechanical polishing and electropolishing, glowing furnace, and finally, a special casting device based on induced electric current. |

| Abstract: |
The significance of occlusal interferences in the aetiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has been questioned in numerous past and recent articles of dental literature. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between clinical diagnoses of TMD and different types of occlusal intereferences (centric interferences (retruded contact position (RCP) - intercuspal position (ICP) slide greater than 1 mm), working interferences, and nonworking interferences during lateral and protrusive mandibular movements) in a young adult nonpatient population. A questionnaire including data from history and clinical functional examination was used in the study. All subjects (a total of 230) were male (conscripts), from 19 to 28 years of age (mean 21.3 ± 2.1). The prevalence of occlusal interferences in percentage in 230 young adult non-patients, 65% had no occlusal interferences during examination of the functional state of occlusion, while 14% of subjects had centric interferences (RCP-ICP slide greater than 1 mm), 5% of subjects had working interferences and 16% of subjects had nonworking interferences during lateral and protrusive mandibular movements. Statistical analysis (Chi square test) did not show any significant differences in the distrubution of occlusal interferences between the group of subjects with the clinical diagnoses of TMD and the group of asymptomatic subjects. We concluded that clinical diagnoses of TMD (muscle and temporomandibular joint disorders) were not associated with different types of occlusal interferences. This study focused on a non-patient population of young adult males and the results may not be applicable for the general population. |

| Abstract: |
Metals and their alloys are unavoidable materials in everyday dental use for the making of fillings, cast cores and post systems, individual crowns, implantants’ suprastructures, dentures and orthodontic devices. Materials implanted in the mouth are exposed over a long period of time to functional, biochemical and bacterial influences of a mouth media which can have a negative impact on a very therapeutic work or surrounding tissue. Corrosive resistance is a prerequisite for biocompatibility. Due to economic reasons, corrosive resistant precious metals have been used less frequently, while the non precious alloys appear on the market. Since a dentist is responsible for a choice of implanted metal, prior to implantation it is important to foresee the impact of saliva as an aggressive media on a metal or alloy. Based on studying different literature, the purpose of this work was to give and overview of the existing dental metals and alloys in contexts with their anticorrosive characteristics, and that way to help a dentist in making a right choice. |

| Abstract: |
Mandibular overdentures, supported by osseointegrated implants, is a well established, successful treatment of partialy edentulous patients. The aim of the study was to analyse the bone mineral density (BMD) in the implant site of the mandibles with ITI implant-supported overdentures when compared with the same site of the edentulous mandibles in complete denture wearers. Eight patients (4 males, 4 females) with 16 ITI implants and overdentures in the mandible and 8 complete denture wearers (4 males, 4 females) who had approximately the same body mass index and the same age participated. The BMD measurements were performed on digitised periapical radiographs with a 10 steps copper stepwedge attached to each film. Grey levels of each step of the stepwedge were transformed to optical density values and using the 3rd degree polynomial the regression formula was calculated for each film. The BMD values of each measured region of interest (ROI) were expressed in the copper stepwedge thickness equivalents. BMD values of the ROIs close to the implant were statistically comparedto the same ROIs in the edentulous mandible using t test for independent samples. BMD values were significantly higher in ITI implant ROIs compared to the matching edentulous mandible sites (p<0.05). We concluded that an increased function after the implant-overdenture treatmentcaused a load-related bone formation which minimizes the physiologic age-related mandibular BMD loss.Supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Republic of Croatia, Project No. 065911. |

| Abstract: |
Improving retention and stability of complete dentures is of considerable interest in prosthetic dentistry. Approaches to this problem over the years have included overdentures, implants and denture adhesives. Although denture adhesives are widely used, there are few quantitative data on the effects of an adhesive on denture retention and stability during normal functional activities. The purpose of this investigation was to study the influence of denture adhesive on the surface EMG activity of the masticatory muscles in a sample of complete denture wearers. In this study 6 denture wearers were investigated. Surface EMG recordings were obtained from left and right anterior temporal and masseter muscle and from the sub-mandibular group in the region of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle on the left and right side. Data were recorded during standardized jaw positions that included clenching in the position of maximal intercuspation of teeth (at 100%, 50% and 25% of the maximum activity), lateral eccentric positions, maximal lateraleccentric positions, protrusion, maximal protrusion and wide opening. The results demonstrated higher digastric muscle activity in protrusion with the teeth at an edge-toedge position after the use of adhesive (p<0.05). In the laterotrusive position, after the use of adhesive, the working side elevator muscles activities increased, although without any statistical significance (p>0.05). This investigation demonstrated that patients were able to produce greaterlevels of muscle activity in protrusive and laterotrusive positions with the use of adhesive. |

| Abstract: |
Loss of interdental alveolar bony septum can be determined directly from a radiograph as a percentage length of the interdental bony crest of the alveolus to the distance from cemento-enamel junction of the tooth to the tooth apex. The aim of this study was to measure the height of interdental alveolar bone around the abutment and nonabutment teeth in removable partial denture wearers (RPD) on dental panoramic radiographs (DPR) through a period of six months. Twenty RPD patients (5 males, 15 females participated in the study. The alveolarbone loss measurement was performed on DPRs, using Shei index, on each mandibular abutment and non-abutment tooth on its mesial and distal side, after the RPD delivery and six months later. Recordings of plaque index (PlI) were made at the mid-buccal, mid-palatal, mesio- and disto-palatal surfaces of each abutment and non-abutment teeth after the RPD delivery and six months later. Theresults revealed a decrease of Shei index values on both abutment and non-abutment teeth, which reached a statistically significant level for distal Shei index values of the abutment teeth and mesial and distal Shei index values of the non-abutment teeth (p<0.05) in a 6 month period. There was no statistically significant difference inPlI values between the first and the second measurement (p>0.05). We concluded that the decrease in bone support on both abutment and non-abutment teeth was attributed to the high levels of PlI and low level of oral hygiene than to RPD loading. | Abstract: |
Residual alveolar ridges (RR) show continual resorption after the loss of the natural dentition, resulting in reduction of the morphologic face height and counterclockwise rotation of the mandible, regardless of whether the dentures are worn or not. The aim of this study was to analyse residual ridge resorption (RRR) in 5 different regions of both jaws on the successive lateral cephalograms of 50 complete denture wearers and to correlate such changes with the number of years of edentia and the region where the last extraction was performed. The height of the residual ridges was measured on 5 different sites of the mandible and the maxillary RR using a calibrated grid. The results revealed that all the patients showed significant RRR in the one year period (p<0.01), which was 2.5x more in the mandible than in the maxilla. RRR was bigger in patients who had had their last extraction within a period of one year before receiving their dentures, than in patients who had extracted their teeth earlier (p<0.01). However, the rate of RRR was significantly higher (p<0.01) in the anterior regions of both jaws compared to distal regions (0.41 and 0.42 mm in the incisive/canine region: 0.2 and 0.17 mm in the premolar/ molar region for the maxilla 1.05 and 0.82 mm in the incisive/canine region : 0.27 and 0.11 in the premolar/ molar region for the mandible), even in patients where the last extraction was performed in the premolar region. It seems that the structure of the bone and strains in RR, due to loading from the dentures, may play a role, not only the period following extraction and the region of the lastextraction. |

The aim of this study was to evaluate patients’ satisfaction with their dentures, with denture retention, speech, chewing ability and the comfort of wearing dentures in complete denture (CD) and Kennedy Class I removable partial denture (RPD) wearers The aim was also to compare the level of satisfaction between the CD and RP wearers. A total of 156 CD and 103 RPD wearers took part in this study. Patients graded their satisfaction by using an analogue-visual scale from 1 to 5. The statistical analysis was made (descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov one sample test, Mann-Whitney test). The following conclusions were made: Both CD and RPD patients were mostly satisfied with their dentures (the distribution of the scores of the patients’ assessments was not as described by Gauss, but was skewed towards the highest scores). Variables were ranged from the best to the worst grades in the group CD wearers as follows:retention of upper CD, comfort of wearing upper CD, speech, aesthetic, overall satisfaction, chewing ability, retention of lower CD and comfort of wearing lower CD. Variables were ranged from the best to the worst grades in the group of RPD wearers as follows: aesthetics, retention of upper RPD, comfort of wearing lower RPD,speech, retention of lower RPD, overall satisfaction, chewing ability and comfort of wearing lower RPD. The difference of the satisfaction between RPD and CD wearers was significant (p<0.05) for the comfort of wearing lower denture (higher scores RPD wearers), for the retention of lower denture (higher scores RPD wearers), and for chewing ability (higher scores CD wearers). |

| Abstract: |
Reduction in the height of the alveolar edentulous ridge in denture wearers is a well documented problem which depends on various local and systemic factors. Changes of bone mineral density (BMD) in denture wearers have not yet been documented in follow-up studies. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in BMD of the mandible in complete (CD) and removable free-end saddle denture wearers (RPD) during a six month period (both groups had complete dentures in the maxilla). Twenty RPD patients (5 male, 15 female) and 20 CD wearers (7 male, 13 female) participated. The BMD measurements were performed on digitised dental panoramicradiographs (DPR) with a 5 step copper stepwedge attached to each film cassette. Grey levels of each step of the stepwedge were transformed to optical density values and using the 3rd degree polynomial the regression formula was calculated for each digitised image to express BMD values of the measured region of interest (ROI) in the copper stepwedge thickness equivalents. The results revealed that the BMD values of the examined ROIs under the distal end of the CD decreased, and in contrast, the matching BMD values under the distal end of the RPD increased, during the six month period, although the changes did not reach a statistically significant level (p>0.05). The BMD values on gonion increased significantly in both examined groups (p<0.05), whichwas attributed to the increased load of the strain forces of the masseter muscle at gonion after the denture delivery. Residual ridge resorption is a result of the influence of many differentlocal and systemic factors (patient’s age, traumatic damage, differentpathological conditions, mineral metabolism disorders, osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism and hormone disbalance). Some parts of the skeleton react differently to the mentioned factors. The resorptive changes are not always the same intensity in all theparts of the skeleton. There are many different results in the investigation of the relationship between maxillary and mandibular resorption and the resorption of the rest of the skeleton.Alveolar ridge resorption is correlated with removable denture wearing. The resorption of the edentulous alveolar ridge is more extensive in full or partial denture wearers with mucosa- or mucosa-gingival support than in partial denture wearers with gingiva-mucosal support. One of the easiest methods for early diagnosis of bone structure changes in the upper and lower jaws is clinical microdensitometry, using a standardised intraoral or panoramic radiograph. |

| Abstract: |
Osteopenia (bone loss, first symptom of osteoporosis) can be identified radiographically - by a reduction in radiopacity of bone measuring the bone density or by observation of thinned cortices, porosity of the cortices, or changes in trabecular pattern on dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs). The objective of this study was to measure mental, antegonial and gonial radiomorphometric indices of the mandible on 200 DPRs taking into account age and gender of the participants. Three indices: cortical width at the gonion (GI), antegonion (AI) and below the mental foramen (MI) were measured at the lower border of the mandible, bilaterally on 200 DPRs. The reliability of the measurements (p= 0.89 for a dental student, p=0.93 for a dentist) and agreement between the observers (= 0.81) were satisfactory. The results of the study revealed significant difference between GI measured on the left and right side of the mandible (p<0.001). Male patients demonstrated significantly higher measured values for MI than female patients (p<0.001), and finally, female patients older than 65 years showed significantly lower measured AI values than those younger than 65 years. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that the DPR is useful as a simple method of screening patients for evaluation of mandibular bone quality prior to dental treatment. |

The precision of the method of microdensitometry on panoramic radiographs (PR), using a five step copper stepwedge, was examined. Two PRs, one after the other, were made for each of the six examined patients. All the PRs were digitised. Gray levels were measured on the stepwedge and on the region of the interest. Measured gray level values were expressed in equivalents of the stepwedge thickness using 3rd degree polynomial. Comparing the values of the equivalents in the region of interest on the first and the second digitised image of the same patient, the differences were within 10%. The results revealed that the method detects mineral bone changes, which surpass more than 10% of the density on PR. |

| Abstract: |
The precision of a method of microdensitometry on digitized images, using six step copper stepwedge (SW), was studied. Two retroalveolar radiographs were made for each of the six examined patients. Lynotype-Hell (8-bit, 300DPI) transparent scanner was used to scan the radiographs. All the images were, prior to the measurements, inverted. The digitized radiographs were saved in the Issa-program for archiving radiographs, while the optical density (OD) was measured by using software Scion image for 6 steps of the SW and 7 regions of interest (ROI). The gray levels (GLs) were converted into the ODs for both images by formula OD = -log Ii /255, where Ii = measured intensity. ODs of each step of the SW were correlated with the copper thickness of the related step and the regression formula was thus derived from the relationship of the OD and the actual thickness of the related step through the third degree polynomial function. The results revealed that the method detects mineral bone changes, i.e. OD changes, which surpass more than 7% of density on the images. |

The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a young adult non-patient population and to investigate the possibility of an association between TMD and occlusal factors. A questionnaire including data from history and clinical functional examination was used in the study. All subjects (a total of 230) were male (army recruits), from 19 to 28 years of age (mean 21.3 ± 2.1). The study indicated that 38% of subjects had at least one symptom (subjects with slight, moderate and severe discomfort), while 45% of subjects had at least one sign of TMD. Spearman's rank correlation test showed weak but statistically significant correlation (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01) between occlusal factors and TMD in a young adult non-patient population. Clinical signs and symptoms of TMD were weakly correlated with some occlusal factors (malocclusion traits (Angle classes II/1, II/2, III, and crossbite), slide between RCP and ICP ≥ 1 mm, midline discrepancy ≥ 2 mm, nonworking side interferences, horizontal overlap ≥ 5 mm) and parafunctional habits (teeth clenching and teeth grinding). However, the importance of association between TMD, occlusal factors and parafunctional habits should not be overstated (weak correlation), since this may lead to neglect of the many other causes of orofacial pain and dysfunction in a biologically multifactorial system. |

The aim of the study was to evaluate patients’ general satisfaction with their removable partial dentures of different classification, construction, material, denture base shape (major connectors), denture support and the number of missing teeth. The aim was also to evaluate patients’ satisfaction with denture retention, speech, aesthetics, chewing ability and the comfort of wearing dentures, depending on the construction. A total of 165 patients with partial dentures took part in this study. There were 59 males and 106 females aged from 38 to 87 years. Patients graded satisfaction with their partial dentures in total and also with aesthetics, speech and retention, chewing ability and the comfort of wearing dentures by means of a scale from 1 to 5. The dentist determined Kennedy classification and their modifications, material and denture support, denture base shape and the number of missing teeth. The dentist also evaluated the denture construction. On the basis of the statistical analysis the following conclusions were made: 1. Patients were on the whole satisfied with their partial dentures (distribution of the scores of the patients’ assessments was asymmetrical towards the highest scores in all examined categories). 2. Kennedy classification and their modifications, material, denture base shape and denture support do not have an influence on patients’ satisfaction with denture retention, speech, mastication, aesthetics and comfort of wearing dentures (p>0.05). 3. The number of lower missing teeth influence the comfort of wearing lower dentures (p<0.05). 4. Construction of lower dentures have an influence on patients’ satisfaction with speech with lower partial denture (p<0.05). |

The aim of this study was to evaluate patients' satisfaction with their partial dentures in relation to some socio-economic variables. The aim was also to evaluate patients' satisfaction with denture retention, speech, aesthetics, chewing ability and comfort while wearing dentures. The influence of some factors, such as age, sex, marital status, level of education, smoking, chronic diseases, socio-economic status, ordinal number and age of thepresent dentures, on patients' satisfaction with partial dentures was also evaluated. A total of 165 patients with partial dentures took part in the study. There were 59 males and 106 females aged between 38 and 87 years. Patients graded their satisfaction with their partial dentures in total and then graded aesthetics, speech and retention, chewing ability and comfort while wearing dentures by using a scale from 1 to 5. Following a statistical analysis the following conclusions were made: 1. Patients were mostly satisfied with their partial dentures (the distribution of the scores of the patients' assessments was asymmetrical towards the highest scores in all examined categories). Only 3.2% of the patients were not absolutely satisfied with their partial dentures, 2. More then half of the examined patients scored all the examined variables in the best score category (5), 3. Patients of a higher level of education had higher criteria for the aesthetic appearance, as they assessed their partial denture aesthetics with a lower grades than patients with lower level of education. Males were less satisfied with the chewing ability of lower partial dentures (p<0.05) than females, 4. There was no significant difference in patients' assessments of the quality of their partial dentures between different age groups, ability of self-supporting life, socio-economic and economic status, marital status, smoking, presence of chronic diseases, number of previous dentures and age of present dentures (p>0.05). |

| Abstract: |
Bone morphogenetic proteins are a group of nine known proteins which represent factors of growth and differentiation with the ability of inducing new bone. Osteoinduction is a precisely defined sequence of biological reactions which lead to the transformation of mesenchymal cells into cartilage and bone.In vitro and in vivo, studies have demonstrated that in order for proteins to realise their clinical function they need carriers. So far ACS (absorbable collagen sponge) has been most frequently used as a carrier. However the search for the best carrier continues. Investigations carried out so far on experimental models (rats, dogs, minipigs and chimpanzees), and in human volunteers, have indicated the great potential of BMP in the reconstruction of bone defects of the stomatognathic area. Promising results have been obtained so far in periodontal surgery, augmentation of alveolar ridges, augmentation of the floor of the maxillary sinus, treatment of periimplantitis and treatment of larger bone defects after extirpation of tumours. |
