| Abstract: |
Today, when dental implants are routinely used, the problem of single tooth replacement is often resolved with implantoprosthetic treatment. Modern medicine prefers the use of body’s own tissues and organs. During seventies in the 20th century tooth follicles were often used for single tooth replacement, but with the ascendance of implants they seem to be forgotten. This presentation displays current trends in transplantation medicine of tooth follicles, showing a case of lower first molar replacement with a follicle of a third molar. |

| Abstract: |
The paper describes different effects on the mechanical properties of fibre reinforced polymers, such as direction and the amount of fibres, impregnation of fibres with the polymer matrix, and adhesion between fibres and the polymer matrix. Direction of the fibres can be unidirectional (vertical to the direction of loading), i.e. bidirectional or multidirectional (under different angles to the direction of loading), or even in random order. The amount of fibres also increases the strength of the composite, although reinforcement with fibres can only be efficient when loading is transferred from the matrix to the fibres. This requires good impregnation of the fibres with the polymer matrix, which depends on the type and viscosity of the polymer matrix (prior to polymerisation), and possibility of good wetting of each fibre. For improvement of adhesion between the polymer matrix and glass fibres bonding/coupling agents are used, particularly silane. They bond to the surface of the glass by silane bridges and by co-polymerisation initiated by free radicals bond with the polymer matrix, thus improving adhesion between fibres and the polymer matrix. Apart from the mechanical properties, such good bonding is also important for reducing the unfavourable effect of water on the marginal surface of the fibre-base. |

| Abstract: |
This paper is an overview on different interpretation of tooth wear, clinical appearance and etiopathogenic models. A process of tooth wear on the ultrastructural level of dental surfaces may be explained by tribological mechanisms, clinically classified as: attrition, abrasion, erosion and abfraction. There are some difficulties in clinical differentiation of certain processes of hard dental tissue wear due to multifactorial etiology and synergistic effects of different mechanisms of tooth wear together with synchronized action over a longer period of time. In order to predict further actions with regard to both existing and planned procedures used during the period of oral rehabilitation, it is important to detect the mechanism which caused the loss of dental tissue, which should ensure clinical success. |

| Abstract: |
Cleidocranial dysostosis (ccd) concerns both teeth and jaw and is characterized by supernumerary teeth, delayed resorption of deciduous teeth and delayed eruption of permanent teeth, tooth impaction and possible follicular cysts formation. A 26 years old patient with ccd received prosthetic treatment. Firstly, provisional removable prostheses were made for evaluation of the patient’s ability to adapt to the newly determined vertical dimension of occlusion and to stimulate the eruption of permanent teeth. Afterwards, telescopic crowns, coping with intraradicular retention and Dalla Bona type stud attachment, and metal-base partial dentures were designed resulting in satisfactory function and esthetics, also resolving the problems of appearance associated with this disease. |

| Abstract: |
This article reviews the fracture problems of polymer materials for removable prostheses and the need for its reinforcement. The historical development of different attempts to strengthen the polymers all the way to the fiber-reinforcements is presented. Different materials can be used for polymer reinforcements: carbonated, aramidic, polyethylene and glass fibers, which are today most frequently used, creating composite materials with enhanced properties. Main features of the fibers in composites are greater rigidity and strength while the matrix provides the protection of the fibers as well as their position that gives the composite material the best properties. The border between the fiber and the matrix is somewhat dubious in a sense that there are often microfractures, caused by inclusion of air or impurities during the production process of composites that can weaken the mechanical properties of the material. Treating the fiber surface with adhesive agents, especially silanes, in order to enhance the grip between the fibers and polymer matrix, enhances the quality of the border. |

| Abstract: |
Knowledge of wear characteristics of esthetic prosthetic materials is essential in everyday dental practice. To establish a new, original, method and produce a device for examining wear characteristics of constructive prosthetic materials, to assess the wear characteristics of different esthetic prosthetic materials and to examine the relationship in a wear pair: natural tooth - prosthetic material. The study was performed on a modified device Taber abraser on samples of six different esthetic prosthetic materials. The wear is smallest for samples of alumina ceramics (Creation and d.Sign), and greatest for polymer (Chromasit) and ceromer material (Targis). The smallest wear factors were established for alumina ceramics as well. The study has resulted in the development of a new method and new device for examining the wear characteristics of prosthetic materials. |

CORROSION GINGIVAL CERVICULAR FLUID DENTAL MATERIALS |
| Abstract: |
Corrosion of prosthetic restorations and simultaneous wear during usage leads to damage of the restoration and harmful reactions on the surrounding tissues or even on distant organs. The aim of this study was to identify the ions Au, Pt, Ag and Pd in the gingival fluid of patients with fixed prosthetic appliances and to determine the mass of ions in the obtained sample . The study included 20 subjects: of which 15 had fixed prosthetic appliances and the same level of hygiene, and 5 without have any prosthetic appliances, who served as a control group. The prosthetic appliances were made from alloy compounds: Au - Pt, Au - Pt, Ag - Pd, Ni - Cr, fixed in the mouths: from 1-14 days, and 3-8 years. Samples were obtained by placing adsorbent paper (AP) in the gingival sulcus (GS) of the abutment tooth for a period of ten minutes. AP with samples gingival fluid (ST) were analysed by means of a mass spectrometer with fused plasma (ICP-MS). The results were statistically analysed by the programme packet SPSS, with descriptive statistics and correlation of samples. In the whole sample statistically significant correlation was found for the concentrations of Ag, Au and Pt, while the concentration of Pd was characteristic for each sample. Analysis of the results in the control group did not reveal statistically significant correlation for the same inter-relations. In the sub-group Ag-Pd alloys statistically significant correlation was established between the concentrations of Ag, Au and Pd, and the most marked correlation found was between the concentrations of Au and Pd. Statistically significant differences were determined in the concentrations of Pt between the subgroups with new appliances, with the highest value in the group of Au alloy (P=0.023) in comparison with the control group. Statistically significant changes were determined in the values of Ag (P=0.011) and Pt (P=0.039), with a fall in the values of both metals in subjects with older prosthetic appliances. |

HYPERSENSITIVITY DENTAL MATERIALS |
| Abstract: |
Contact allergy is a delayed reaction to sensitivity in which a localised lesion of the skin or mucous membrane occurs as a result of contact with an allergen. The fitting of a fixed, or placement of a mobile, prosthetic appliance in the oral cavity causes corrosive processes to occur on the surface of the restoration and the release of ions which, as haptens, can induce allergic reaction. The aim of this investigation was to examine the occurrence of allergies to component and auxiliary prosthetic materials by patch test in patients with lichen ruber planus, stomatitis and stomatopyrosis. Thirtytwo patients with fixed and/or mobile restorations and seven patients with one of the above diagnoses without a restoration, participated in the investigation. Testing was carried out by standard technique (patch test) with 13 allergens. The results of the investigation indicate the greater probability of a positive patch test in subjects with the aforementioned diseases and with a restoration, in relation to subjects without a restoration (P = 0.62). The probability of symptoms worsening increased with the insertion/ fitting of a fixed or placement of a mobile restoration (P = 0.019). This was particularly so in the case of restorations made of Co-Cr-Mo alloy. With the increase in the number of units of fixed restorations, or the presence of mobile restorations in both jaws, the probability of a positive patch test to cobalt chloride also increased (P = 0.05). Lichen ruber planus increased the probability of a positive patch test in the majority of cases (P = 0.05). The greatest number of positive results were for the allergens nickel, cobalt and chrome (each 17.95%) and a negative finding was obtained for dibutylphthalate and HH mix. Stomatopyrosis increased the probability that the subject would have a positive result for chrome (P = 0.019). The occurrence of a positive patch test was greater in women for all allergens (P = 0.05), apart from epoxy resin, where it was less than in the male subjects (P=0.036). Because of the greater incidence of contact allergies in the population a more detailed investigation of prosthetic materials is needed prior to their introduction into clinical practice. In the case of patients with atopic history allergological testing and immunological tests should be performed prior to prosthetic treatment. |

| Abstract: |
Epidemiological studies on the condition of existing or the need for new fixed prosthodontic appliances, with the purpose of planning required prosthetic teams, improved materials and methods, are essential in modern prosthodontics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the aesthetic material used in patients with fixed prosthodontic appliances in the Metkovi} region and determine the frequency of crowns and bridges in relation to age, gender, level of education, employment, socio-economic status and frequency of regular visits to the dentist. examination The study included 212 patients, wearing fixed prosthodontic appliances, who were examined in the dental office (clinic) at the Metkovi} Medical Centre during 2001.Descriptive statistics and (2 tests were used during data analysis. The following conclusions were made: 1. The older group of patients had significantly more bridges than crowns (p<0.01). There was no significant difference between gender with regard to the distribution of crowns and bridges (p>0.05), or between patients of different levels of education (p>0.05). Retired patients had significantly more bridges than crowns compared to employed or unemployed patients (p<0.,05). Patients who visit their dentist regularly (once a year or more often) had significantly more crowns than bridges compared to the patients who visit their dentist irregularly or when in pain (p<0.01). This group (irregular visits to their dentist) had more teeth extracted and consequently bridges than the patients who regularly visit their dentist . There was no significant difference between patients with regard to crown and bridge prevalence, depending on the age when they first visited the dentist (p>0.,05). Less educated patients had more fixed prosthodontic appliances older than 10 years than better educated patients (p<0.01). 2. Relatively high frequency of porcelain (64%) was recorded in comparison to acrylic material (36%). There was no difference in gender depending on the material used (p>0.05). Patients older than 60 and less educated patients had more acrylic appliances than younger patients (<39 years) who had mainly only ceramic appliances (p<0.01). |

The aim of this study was to evaluate patients’ satisfaction with their dentures, with denture retention, speech, chewing ability and the comfort of wearing dentures in complete denture (CD) and Kennedy Class I removable partial denture (RPD) wearers The aim was also to compare the level of satisfaction between the CD and RP wearers. A total of 156 CD and 103 RPD wearers took part in this study. Patients graded their satisfaction by using an analogue-visual scale from 1 to 5. The statistical analysis was made (descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov one sample test, Mann-Whitney test). The following conclusions were made: Both CD and RPD patients were mostly satisfied with their dentures (the distribution of the scores of the patients’ assessments was not as described by Gauss, but was skewed towards the highest scores). Variables were ranged from the best to the worst grades in the group CD wearers as follows:retention of upper CD, comfort of wearing upper CD, speech, aesthetic, overall satisfaction, chewing ability, retention of lower CD and comfort of wearing lower CD. Variables were ranged from the best to the worst grades in the group of RPD wearers as follows: aesthetics, retention of upper RPD, comfort of wearing lower RPD,speech, retention of lower RPD, overall satisfaction, chewing ability and comfort of wearing lower RPD. The difference of the satisfaction between RPD and CD wearers was significant (p<0.05) for the comfort of wearing lower denture (higher scores RPD wearers), for the retention of lower denture (higher scores RPD wearers), and for chewing ability (higher scores CD wearers). |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to screen patients with fixed prosthodontic appliances, in the mouth for a period of 5 years or more, for root caries and pocket formation, deeper than 3 mm. The aim was also to determine the difference between frequency of pathologic findings for different materials of fixed prosthodontic appliances (FPA), or between abutments and natural teeth. A total of 260 patients (55% women and 45% men) aged from 25 to 70 years, who had a fixed prosthodontic appliance for a period of 5 years or more in their mouth and who were fully satisfied, participated in the study. A total of 260 orthopantomographs were analysed with 2265 teeth, 864 were abutments of the bridges, 407 crowns and the rest natural teeth. Radiographs were analysed for root caries and pocket formation. The results reveal relatively high incidence of pathologic findings (caries, periodontal pockets > 3 mm) in patients with FPDs older than 5 years. Periodontal pockets were more frequent than cervical caries. The highest frequency of pathologic findings was registered for abutments with metal acrylic crowns, and the lowest frequency of pathologic findings was registered for abutments with metal-ceramic crowns (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between abutments with metal-ceramic crowns and non-abutment teeth (p>0.05). There were no significant differences in caries incidence between the examined teeth (p>0.05). Non-abutment teeth and abutments of metal-ceramic crowns had significantly lower frequency of pockets deeper than 3 mm than abutments of metal acrylic and fullmetallic crowns (p<0.05). |

| Abstract: |
Partial or complete deficiency of the clinical crown of non-vital teethleads to a certain degree of deficiency of the dental arch, and to a certain extent disturbed functioning of the masticatory system. In such cases it is necessary to construct posts and cores to strengthen the tooth abutment as the base for crowns and bridges. The aim of the investigation was to compare the resistance of nonvitalteeth, fitted with cast metal and prefabricated posts and cores, todynamic loading in a high frequency pulsator, with special attention todifferent widths of root canal preparation. The results of the fractographic analysis show that the greatest resistance to dynamic loading was found in teeth with narrow prefabricated posts and cores, which endured loading of 1000N for an average 7,497,318 cycles, without the occurrence of fracture. Widening of the root canal in the case of preparation of the intraradicular part of the tooth for posts and cores, of more than 3.5 mm, significantly reduced its retention and increased the possibility of root fracture. All fractures occurred in the tooth root, while the posts and cores retained intact. |

| Abstract: |
The entire osseous system of transmission of mastication forces may be divided into five smaller units: the lower jaw, the anterior and posterior system of facial mid-portion, the frontal bone with the base of the cerebral cranial segment and the cerebral part of the skull. The development of these regions is simultaneously influenced by genetic determinants and numerous external (environment, climate) and general factors (statics, gravity, upright walking). The objective was to study basic craniometric and skeletotopic characteristics of the facial skeleton and hard palate in osteologic samples kept at the "Drago PeroviE" Department of Anatomy. A total of 64 skulls pertaining to both sexes were included in the study. Following determination of craniometric points, measurements of twelve selected indicators were made by electron gliding meter with 0.01 error probability and by goniometer with 1 percent error probability. The obtained results were compared with the data of similar studies and, together with other harmonic distances, they were mathematically inserted into a harmonic circle with the diameter of 2R. The height of the skull is taken to be 2R, which is one sixth of an adult person's height. The obtained measurements have ensured the basis for further mathematical and structural analyses of the cranial structure. |
