| Abstract: |
In orthodontic casuistics, utterance impairments of varying severity and forms are quite frequently encountered, which primarily urged us to embark upon a study of interrelationship between orthodontic findings and speech function. A group of 45 subjects was examined. Cases in whom impairments of articulation were not caused by CNS dysfunction, were primarily selected according to casuistics. Thirty-one patients, 24 males and 7 females, aged 7-25 years, were completely studied. Representatives of all basic orthodontic abnormalities and 4 eugnathic subjects with utterance impairments were included for comparison. Utterance impairments were found to correlate with the stage and severity of orthodontic abnormality. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to establish the mode of inheritance of hypodontia based on family data, and by means of segregational analysis to test whether this anomaly follows the expected ratio of segregation for the expected mode of inheritance. The research has been performed by analysing pedigrees of 35 families with hypodontia. Genealogical analyses suggest that hypodontia follows an autosomal dominant (AD) mode of inheritance in 21 families. The sample has been obtained by single incomplete ascertainment. The following methods have been applied for segregational analysis: Weinberger's proband method, Davie's method, Fisher's method, Robert's method, and finally Penrose's of a "relative frequency" method. Weinberger's method showed the value of 0.27 (27%) of the segregation of genes for hypodontia of the chosen sample and in case of Davie's method 0.28 (28.57%). Fisher's "sib" method gave the same results as Davie's method (28.57%). Roberts's formula showed that the value of X2 was 1.76, what means that there is no significant deviation from the expected 1:1 ratio. The results obtained are in favor of the autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Penrose's method of a "relative frequency", suitable for differencing monogenic from polygenic inheritance, also showed autosomal dominant mode of inheritance of hypodontia in the analyzed sample. |

| Abstract: |
In this study, 537 extracted molars (261 first and 276 second molars) with well developed roots were examined to assess the width of the interradicular space and the shape of the furcation vault. The roots were set widely apart in 91.6% of the first and 64.8% of the second permanent molars, while the roots set closely together were observed in 8.4% and 27.9% of the first and second molars, respectively. Fuseg roots were found in second molars only, in 7.2% of cases. A flat furcation fornix was detected in 18.3% of the first and 14.0% of the second molars, whereas a convex shape was observed in 20.7% of the first and 10.5% of the second molars, respectively (P less than 0.001). A convex shape of furcation was found in 8.0% of the first and 27.3% of the second molars, respectively (P less than 0.001). Interradicular ridge was present in a very high percentage (52.9% of the first and 48.0% of the second molars). A concave shape of furcation fornix was statistically more frequent in molars with closely set roots for the first and second permanent molars (P less than 0.001). It seemed that the width of the interradicular space had no influence on the prevalence of interradicular bridges, regardless of type of molars involved. |

| Abstract: |
In fixed prosthodontics, analysis of the distribution of basic prosthetic appliances according to sex, dental arch and particular types of teeth, is quite understandably needed. Therefore, these relations were analyzed in a sample of young adults. The aim was to find out the trends prevailing in our population, that may have proved useful in choosing appropriate measures in prosthetic therapy. Aimed clinical studies were conducted in 5665 students, 3078 females and 2587 males aged 18-20 years. The results obtained pointed to a significant difference in the prosthetic appliances between the upper and lower jaws (89.36% and 10.64%, respectively). Of the total of 1306 appliances in both jaws, 994 (76%) referred to anterior teeth, including first premolars, indicating the prevalence of esthetic requests and indications as compared to the functional ones. According to age, 57% of the total number of prosthetic appliances were made for females and 43% males. |

| Abstract: |
Average amounts of palladium-silver alloy were assessed in a sample of 966 veneer crowns and 667 casted posts. The mean weight values of the samples under study were compared in relation to particular types of anterior teeth. The specimens cast in Auropal SE were weight by the precise balance, Tehtnica, type 6215. Results were analyzed by weight according to the type of the sample under study, and classified according to age, and to the anterior teeth of the upper and lower jaws. On an average, the heaviest posts and veneer crowns were measured on upper canines, whereas the lighest were those on lower incisors. A cast post was found to be by about 40% heavier than a veneer crown on the same tooth. |

| Abstract: |
The bone responds to stimulation with new bone formation, resorption or the combination of both. Exclussive bone formation i.e. sclerosation is defined as an increase in the bony mass which is a result of either decreased resorption or excessive bone production. The authors describe the following inflammatory sclerosing jaw lesions: sclerosing osteitis, sclerosing periostitis of Garre and diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis. The etiopathogenesis, clinical features, histologic findings, diagnostic procedures, therapy and prognosis are presented for each pathologic entity. Further a case of rare localisation of diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis in maxilla is reported. In conclusion, the authors point out that all persistent complication following tooth extraction must arise suspection of among other problems, of diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis, bearing in mind. Despite therapy the disease frequently recures. |

| Abstract: |
A technique of etching was employed in 50 patients for bridge retention. The Rexillium III (Jenevie Industries, Wallingford Co.) alloy and Comspan bond (L. D. Caulk Co., Milford Del.) were used. Therapeutic results obtained with adhesive (etched) bridges depend on a variety of factor: careful and accurate indication, precise work plan, minimal preparation of the supporting tooth, appropriate method of retention of the attachment metal portion, and the type of bond and of dental alloy. Clinical application of bond cast bridges has a quite good prognosis. A prolonged period of observation should provide more data on the behavior of such appliances in the oral cavity and allow us evaluations. |

| Abstract: |
The potential presence of Candida albicans in oral leukokeratotic lesions, also entailing the need of additional antimiotic therapy, has been quite extensively discussed in literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Candida albicans isolates in subjects with oral leukoplakia as well as of candidal leukoplakia according to oral mucosa regions. The study included 60 subjects, mean age 46 years. A study group had 28 subjects with oral leukoplakia, whereas a control group comprised subjects free of any pathological alterations of oral mucosa. In all subjects, a clinical oral examination was performed and material for microbiological analysis taken. Following cultivation and incubation, tests of identification and microbiological analysis were carried out on the material thus grown. Results of the study revealed that Candida albicans was present in 67.9% of subjects with oral leukoplakia, which is the highest percentage reported on so far, and in 28.1% of subjects without any pathologic alterations of oral mucosa. The prevalence of candidal leukoplakia was found to be highest in oral mucosa, followed by lips, tongue and sublingual mucosa. Thus, these findings appear to clearly confirm the need of additional use of antimicotics, along with antikeratotic therapy of leukoplakia. |

| Abstract: |
As capital of Dalmatia, Zadar also was a center of the province health organization. Headquarters of the provincial health correspondent, the most educated and respectable physician in the province, was situated in the town. His duty was to make all efforts for the health status of the population to improve and for the possible epidemics to prevent. Dr Mihovil Milković took over this duty for a certain period of time. At that time, Dalmatians mostly studied medicine in Padua, where Ph. D. in medicine could be obtained after having defended the inaugural dissertation. M. Milković obtained his Padua Ph. D. in 1847, having defended his dissertation in dentistry, entitled "A Brief Review of Pathology and Therapy of Dental Diseases". This dissertation is one of the oldest publications in the field of dentistry in our country, and by its originality and high quality it was on the same level with the medical science in Europe of that time. |
