Abstract: |
Sets containing of four specimens of intact human enamel of 18 teeth were inserted into volunteers' partial prostheses. The specimens were exposed to the action of oral cariogenic factors during 7, 14, 21 or 28 days. Electron microanalysis was employed to assess the demineralizing loss of calcium and phosphorus concentrations in experimental specimens, in relation to the original enamel of control specimens. Results showed a significant and steady decrease in Ca and P concentrations in all specimens, which was directly proportional to the duration of specimen exposure to oral cavity conditions. In four specimens with a 28-day oral exposure, an increase in Ca and P concentrations was observed in the most superficial enamel layer, which was explained as activation of the process of remineralization. |

Abstract: |
A gas-chromatographic method for fast and quantitative determination of residual monomer (methylmethacrylate, MMA) in the polymethylmethacrylate mixture obtained by mixing polymerized powder and monomer from two different manufacturers (Biocryl and Mayor) was established. The material was prepared in two different ways: by the so-called classic and by current procedures. Pulverized material was extracted by methanol and the content of free methylmethacrylate in the extract measured using a flame ionization detector on a 1.5 m, 6/3 mm glass column with a DC-200 filling (10%) on a Chromosorb WHP, 100/120 mesh and at constant temperature of 170 degrees C. For Biocryl, mean values x = 2.147 g/100 g of ground specimen (SD, 0.111) obtained by the "classic" procedure, and x = 2.199 g/100 g of ground specimen (SD, 0.166) for polymerisate obtained in a Presstherm device, respectively, were obtained. For Mayor, mean values x = 1.544 g/100 g of ground specimen (SD, 0.222) of the polymer obtained by the "classic" procedure, and x = 1.205 g/100 g of ground specimen (SD, 0.317) for polymerisate obtained in a Presstherm device, respectively, were recorded. The lower limit of MMA detection under chromatographic conditions was 0.01 mg. |

Abstract: |
Analysis of growth dynamics of the four main craniofacial dimensions at the transition point from primary into mixed dentition was performed in order to better determine the effect of individual orthodontic anomalies starting to manifest at that time, on the direction and extent of the alterations observed. A sample consisting of 73 children aged 3.5-5.5 years, free of any overt symptoms of orthodontic anomalies, were re-examined at the age of 6.5-8.5 years and divided into groups according to orthodontic findings then obtained. Mean values (and their differences) of the defined parameters obtained on the first and second measurement were analyzed, both for the sample in total and separately, according to the orthodontic findings in mixed dentition. Based on this data, specific relationships between alterations in each craniofacial dimension and maxillary morphology, specific for particular anomaly, were determined. In the group free of growth dynamics anomalies, both facial and both cranial parameters were almost identical. More or less expressed alterations of a single facial or cranial parameter in dysgnathic subjects may have been related to oral symptoms of the respective anomaly. At the same time, results obtained in the study suggested the size of the four main craniofacial dimensions to differ as early as in primary dentition, and become grouped, depending on the development of future orthodontic anomaly. |

DENTISTS POSTURE TECHNOLOGY, DENTAL HUMAN ENGINEERING DENTAL ASSISTANTS |
Abstract: |
Differences between two working process technologies during the working time of a DMD and his/her team were studied. The study sample consisted of 16 dental medicine teams from the Zagreb area. One half of the teams were working using the conditionally termed old technology (T I), and the other half employed the new technology (T II). The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which the new technology elicited beneficial health-related effects on the team as a whole and on the working process in particular, as compared to the old technology. In particular sections of the process of work, differences were statistically significant, as shown by the results tabularly presented. Comparison of the two study groups was also carried out. It appears noteworthy to mention that the new technology, and even this one used for comparison in this study, should be expected to contribute to better working process which, in turn, might at the same time be one of the guidelines for future studies in dental medicine ergonomics. |

Abstract: |
The authors have presented the case of ameloblastic fibroma of the upper jaw in 21 years old adult. Dimensions of the tumor, which were the result of long standing growth, and the occurring at the age when odontogenesis was practically completed, have supported the concept of distinct pathologic entity, but have not been agree with the theory of interrelationship of ameloblastic fibroma, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma and odontoma. In the context of those two studies the authors have discussed relationship of the mixed odontogenic tumors. |

Abstract: |
A four year study was carried out on 52 patients with allergic changes of oral mucosa. The most frequent symptoms were oedema of mucosae, stomatitis and glossitis. In 35 patients, by use of allergic tests, we have found the cause of the disease, mostly in the group of nutritive, contact or inhalatory allergens. At 17 patients allergic tests were negative, but we have found the cause of changes at 8 patients. It was intestinal parasitosis or focalosis. At 9 patients all results of tests and clinical findings were normal, but they all had a good reaction on anti-allergic therapy with antihistamines. Collaboration between allergologist and stomatologist could improve our results on that field. |

Abstract: |
Toxic reaction is the most common side-effect accompanying the local anesthetic administration. Toxic reaction symptoms may manifest as CNS symptoms or cardiovascular systems symptoms. Initially, the toxic reaction symptoms in CNS undergo the stage of stimulation, followed by the stage of depression. A case of toxic reaction to the usual dose of Cystocain DS for mandibular anesthesia in an 11-year-old girl is presented. The symptoms began with poor general condition, nausea, severe vertigo, pallor and excessive perspiration, followed by clonus-type muscular convulsions, with consciousness preserved. Upon hospitalization, convulsions were interrupted by i.v. administration of diazepam. Blood pressure returned to normal, circulation recovered and normal frequency and depth of breathing were resumed. To date, only one similar case of reaction to Cystocain DS was reported to the WHO. Mere possibility as well as seriousness and risk of the occurrence of such a situation require close therapist's observations of each patient receiving any type of local anesthetics. |

Abstract: |
A rare type of atypical rotation of upper central incisors is presented. Due to an extreme type of rotation, which was 90 degrees, and a restricted space left available, a fixed orthodontic treatment was applied and completed after two years of therapy. An individual optimum was achieved. |
