| Abstract: |
Disinfection of elastomeric impression materials used in prosthetic dentistry can cause dimensional changes in the impression materials. 0.5% chlorhexidine gluconate is usually used for disinfection of impressions at the School of Dental Medicine in Zagreb. The purpose of this study was to measure and compare linear dimensional changes of three elastomeric impression materials after their immersion in a certain disinfectant. The master dies were made according to the ADA specification no 19. The tested materials were Panasil (addition silicone), Blend-a-scon (condensation silicone) and Impregum F (polyether). Twelve samples were immersed in disinfectant, twelve in water and twelve left in the air for four different periods of time (10 min., 30 min., 60 min and 24 hours). Linear dimensional changes were measured by a non-contact digital tool microscope. The smallest changes were noticed in addition silicone with the least tendency to expansion. The condensation silicone contracted within a tolerant range of 0.2 - 0.4%, according to DIN 13913. Polyether expanded in the disinfectant significantly. Our results show that the tested polyether is not appropriate for disinfection by immersion in chlorhexidine gluconate, while the other two materials underwent 24-hour immersion with linear dimensional changes within a clinically acceptable range. |

| Abstract: |
In this paper, the importance of the tooth in identification an unknown person has been demonstrated. The theoretical part shows the difference between genomic and mitochondrial DNA. That difference is the durability and properties which they carry and the value they have in identification. Microanatomy has also been described, possible locations of cells inthe tooth and methods to collect material for DNA extraction. The practical part shows the methods used in particular cases for DNA isolation. Horizontal section through the cervical root is used to collect material for DNA isolation. Genomic DNA , from the material, is extracted by organic phenol-chloroform methods. The results are shown on 1 % agarose gel and photographed by a Polaroid camera. |

| Abstract: |
Contradictions in the field of epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders continue, especially because such disorders rarely appear as individual entities, but as multiple problems with overlapping signs and symptoms. The purpose of this study was to establish the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders in a population of younger male subjects (nonpatients) in relation to interarch relationships in the intercuspal position, to establish a correlation between signs and symptoms and morphological occlusion(Angle classification) and to compare results with known clinical studies. The study comprised 230 male subjects aged from 19 to 28 years, who were examined based on a questionnaire (clinical functional analysis according to Gutowski). From the total number of subjects, 44.3% of subjects had at least one sign, and 38% of subjects had at least one symptom of a temporomandibular disorder. Analysing signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders individually, 91 subjects (39.6%) had jaw joint clicking, 3 subjects (1.3%) had crepitation in jaw joints, a total of 78 subjects (33.9%) had pain in jaw joints at palpation and functional loading, a total of 58 subjects (25.2%) had pain in the muscles of mastication at palpation and functional examination, 43 subjects (18.7%) had a lower jaw deviation exceeding 2 mm and 30 subjects (13%) had tension-type headache. By the calculation of Spearman’s correlation rank, a correlation between signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and interarch relationships in the intercuspal position, especially in the group with disturbed interarch relationships (class II/1, class II/2, class III and crossbite), wasestablished. |

| Abstract: |
Owing to the ample dental market supply, more than a thousand different systems and alloys for prosthetic use are presently available. The aim of the study was to identify the basic components of the existent prosthetic constructions in patients requiring additional prosthetic therapy. Anodic sampling of eight prosthetic restorations of unknown composition was performed using a minielectrode with a graphite handpiece, aqueous NaCl solution as electrolyte, and a 4.5 V battery as a source of electric current. The samples were analyzed by quantitative thin-layer chromatography (QTLC). Sample chromatograms were developed by use of the acetone and 2 M HCl solvent system. Cobalt was visualized using aqueous solution of sodium-diethyldithiocarbonate, and chromium by ethanol solution of dimethylglyoxime. The percentage proportion of the elements identified was determined on an image analyzer, previously gauged according to the known standards. |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of three endodontic sealers (AH 26, Ketac-Endo and Apexit) using Direct Contact Test (DCT) and Agar Diffusion Test (ADT). DCT is based on measuring the effect of close contact between test bacteria and tested material, while ADT measures the areas of bacterial growth inhibition and consequently the incidence of microbial resistence of bacteria. The results of DCT showed that all tested materials, apart from Apexit, have antibacterial activity. The diameters of the bacterial growth inhibition zones in ADT demonstrated by Ketac-Endo (x=12.26 ± 1.76 mm), AH 26 (x=5.67 ± 0.66 mm) and Apexit (x=0.80 ± 0.29 mm). |

POST AND CORE TECHNIQUE BIOMECHANICS DENTAL PULP DEVITALIZATION |
| Abstract: |
Restoration with post and cores for fractured clinical crowns on devitalized teeth is the treatment procedure frequently used in the clinical practice of specialists and dentists in primary health care. The paper deals with prosthetic reasons for teeth devitalization and making of post and cores, particularly when a comparatively large rests of the clinical crown are preserved, along with the indications and contraindications for their placement on devitalized teeth.Influence of biomechanical factors is analyzed with regard to post and core retention and stress distribution over the hard dental tissue and surroundings, depending on possible variations in preparation width and length, particularly in the radicular part, for different types of post and cores. In conclusion, the authors express their preference for individual post and core placement over prefabricated, and highlight the importance of correctly determined indication for post and core, successful selection of the type of post and core and correct treatment for extension of the lifetime of the fixed prosthetic work on the endodontically treated tooth. |

| Abstract: |
All oral lichen ruber (OLR) cases seen at the Department of Oral Medicine, School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb, from January 1, 1995 to December 31, 1998, were included in this retrospective study. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of Candida (C. albicans) infection and burning mouth syndrome (BMS) in OLR patients. The mean age of the examined men and women was 53 and 55 years, respectively. In women, the prevalence of OLR was twice as high as in men (66.6% : 33.3%). OLR most commonly occured between the age of 40 and 60 years. The most frequent type of OLR was lichen planus (69%). C. albicans was detected in 75 of 174 (43.1%) patients, while BMS was present in 62 (35.6%) patients. There were 39 (22.4%) patients with candidiasis (without BMS), 26 (14.9%) with BMS (without candidiasis), and 36 (20.7%) with both candidiasis and BMS. The high prevalence of C. albicans infection and BMS concurrence indicates to the need for simultaneous treatment of both entities. |

| Abstract: |
Our study was conducted in 1999 and investigated tooth decay in two groups of children aged from 5 to 7 years and 12 to 15 years in Sarajevo. DMFT /dmft in these two groups was 7.53 % in pres-chool children, and 7.18 % in muddle school children. The prevalence of dental caries in pre-school children was 89%, and in middle school children 96.98% (mean value: 92.9%). The results were compared with data for the prewar period in Bosnia and Herzegovina when the prevalence of the caries was 90% (1). Comparison with data for European countries was relative because of the low fluoride concentration in drinking water (0.060 ppm) and because of changes in living conditions during the war. The objective of our research was to evaluate DMFT/dmft in children who had spent the period 1992-1996 in Sarajevo. The aim of this study was to evaluate dental health, on the basis of which dental care can be defined. |

The wear of dental hard tissues is a long-term process, which can cause complete wear of clinical crowns. Complete oral rehabilitation is theen needed to restore damaged oral relations. Unfortunately, such therapy is often financially unsuitable to the patients. A case is reported of such patient treatment, using an upper partial removable denture with metal base, which provided satisfactory functional and aesthetic effect at minimum cost. |
