| Abstract: |
Our primus, teacher, colleague and friend, Primarius Vladimir Mikolji, died on the 7th November, 2000; a man who devoted most of his life to the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery in Zagreb. Although he left the the Clinic when he retired he never really deserted us right up until the last days of his life. Every so often he would call in to see us, interested in the work of the Clinic and how we had settled into the new quarters at the Clinical Hospital in Dubrava, and always pleased to hear of all our improvements. He visited us a week before his death. |

| Abstract: |
A study was carried out of 70 denture wearers to determine the influence of local predisposing factors: the presence of saliva, oral and denture hygiene habits, age of present dentures and the degree of Candida colonisation on the fitting denture surface in the development of denture stomatitis. 49 patients with clinical evidence of various severity of denture stomatitis and 21 controls were investigated clinically and mycologically. Clinical tests included salivary measurment, oral and denture hygiene assesment, age of dentures and denture swabs for Candida culture on Sabouraud growth medium. Results have shown no significant differences between the two groups in quantity of saliva , oral and denture hygiene habits and denture age. However, in denture stomatitis group dentures were less older (6-10 years) then in controls (>10 years) but tended to be dirtier and related to the higher degree of denture stomatitis. The age of dentures was not related to the degree of inflammation but was with the degree of Candida colonization. Significant difference was obtained in the degree of Candida colonization on the fitting denture surface between denture stomatitis and control group. Poor denture hygiene favour colonization of Candida which interact as initiative local factors in the development of denture stomatitis. |

| Abstract: |
The entire osseous system of transmission of mastication forces may be divided into five smaller units: the lower jaw, the anterior and posterior system of facial mid-portion, the frontal bone with the base of the cerebral cranial segment and the cerebral part of the skull. The development of these regions is simultaneously influenced by genetic determinants and numerous external (environment, climate) and general factors (statics, gravity, upright walking). The objective was to study basic craniometric and skeletotopic characteristics of the facial skeleton and hard palate in osteologic samples kept at the "Drago PeroviE" Department of Anatomy. A total of 64 skulls pertaining to both sexes were included in the study. Following determination of craniometric points, measurements of twelve selected indicators were made by electron gliding meter with 0.01 error probability and by goniometer with 1 percent error probability. The obtained results were compared with the data of similar studies and, together with other harmonic distances, they were mathematically inserted into a harmonic circle with the diameter of 2R. The height of the skull is taken to be 2R, which is one sixth of an adult person's height. The obtained measurements have ensured the basis for further mathematical and structural analyses of the cranial structure. |

| Abstract: |
Epidemiological research of periodontal disease indicates the prevalence of special forms of progressive periodontal diseases, juvenile and rapidly progressive periodontitis. These diseases start in early adolescence, therefore need to be diagnosed early and adequately treated. We examined by CPITN the prevalence of juvenile and rapidly progressive periodontitis in 1202 subjects (who were adequate for our purpose). They were all residents of the city of Zagreb. Also we compared the relationship of progressive forms of periodontal destruction with some other forms of periodontal disease. The subjects were school children, workers and clerks, divided in to age groups 15- 19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-44, 45-54 and >55. For periodontal status evaluation we used the CPITN-community periodontal index of treatment requirements. The index consisted of the mean number of sextants of the population with sulcus bleeding, calculus, shallow and deep pockets. Additional criteria for evaluation of progressive forms of periodontal disease by use of CPITN was based upon more intensive inflammatory symptoms on the gingiva, active and deep periodontal pockets and removable dentures. After statistical analysis the results of the STATJOB programme revealed that the prevalence of progressive periodontitis in Zagreb was 4.1% ( 0.6% for the juvenile form and 3.5% for the rapid form). The incidence of gingivitis, the initial form of the periodontal disease, was much greater, in youngsters 82%, and the incidence of periodontal disease in adults was also high, 80%.Furthermore, the incidence of some forms of periodontal destruction was also tested. The percentage of subjects with deep periodontal pockets in juvenile and rapid periodontitis was 87.7%, and in adults periodontitis 9.5%, which indicates more severe forms of periodontal destruction in the group with juvenile and rapidly progressive periodontits. The use of CPITN was an orientational method that showed us the prevalence of the tested forms and the treatment needs. In this way we separated from the population cases with progressive periodontitis that need further clinical tests and adequate therapy. |

| Abstract: |
The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and extent of dentoalveolar compensation in subjects with disharmonious vertical jaw base relationships, in relation to subjects with normal occlusion. The study was performed on 37 lateral cephalograms of patients with open bite and 35 of patients with normal occlusion, aged 15 to 18 years. Each cephalogram was traced twice by two authors. The cephalometric analyses were performed by linear and angular measurements. The angular cephalometric variables were: n-s-gn, sp-pm:m-go, m-go-ar, the sum of the posterior angles according to Bjork (1947, 1954,1966,1972),1:sp-pm and 1:m-go. Linear cephalometric variables: oi, om oi/om, ui, um and ui/um were analysed using the methods of Korkhaus (1959). Statistical data analysis included descriptive statistics, method error, t-test and Pearson(s correlation coefficient for association between variables. Significant differences (p < 0.001) between the samples were found in all investigated variables except 1:sp-pm, oi/om and um. Retrusion of the lower incisors was found, indicating dentoalveolar adaptation to the present posterior rotation of the mandible. Inclination of the upper incisors in relation to the base of the maxilla was significantly negative correlated with the variable n-s-gn, and slightly negatively by correlated with the variable sp:pmm-go. The variables of the height of the upper and lower jaws (oi, om, ui, um) were significantly correlated. A significiant negative correlation was found between variables um and m-go-ar. The correlation between variable um and Bjork’s polygon was slightly negative. The variable ui showed slight negative correlation with the variable m-go-ar. Such a relationship is the result of compensatory retrusion of the lower incisors and a steep mandibular plane. |

PERIODONTAL INDEX PERIODONTAL DISEASES + epidemiology RURAL POPULATION |
| Abstract: |
The rural population in mountain region has less periodonal disease and attachment loss degree. A comparison of periodontal health and necessary treatment between the littoral and rural populations in mountain region was conducted on a sample of 441 individuals (40% of the population) in the 15+ age group, by applying the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and the Loss of Attachment Index (LA). The prevalence of periodontal disease in both areas appears to be very high. The occurrence of gingivitis and parodontitis is evident at an early age. Neither in the littoral nor in the mountains region was the prevalence of healthy periodont in the 30+ age group recorded. In the littoral area shallow periodontal pockets are already present with adolescents - 11.76% (p<0.05), and in the mountain region from the age of 20 - 14.26%. More than 50% of the 30+ population of both regions has either deep or shallow pockets, while approximately 40% of the 55+ population in both groups has at least one deep pocket. The mountain village has excluded sextants in all age groups, ranging from 2 to 11 times more then the littoral village (p<0.05). In the 65+ group of both populations more than 4 sextants are excluded. Because of the smaller number of remaining teeth, the mountain village records less periodontal disease.More than 50% of the 35+ age group has loss of attachment >6mm (approximately in one sextant). In the 45+ age group there is almost no sextant with loss of attachment <3mm. More than 90% of the examinees in both regions need some kind of periodontal treatment. |

| Abstract: |
This review gives the wide aspect of the complex question of biologic width and represents an attempt to answer some of the demands in relation to it. First of all, it debates the problems that occur after improper margin placement in the periodontium. Initially, the dimensions of biologic width are contemplated and then margin placement, is discussed and the success of restorative procedures and reasons for failure. |

| Abstract: |
The paper describes the unusual localisation of a granular myoblastoma. Granular myoblastoma, or myoblastoma of granular cells, is a tumour of controversial etiology, and according to its rare occurrence in tissues, is an entity in itself. It occurs most frequently in subcutaneous tissues, skin, the breasts, skeletal muscles, and also intraoral tissues, where it occurs most often in the tongue. In the presented case the tumour occurred on the upper lip, on the border of the lip redness, and after excisional biopsy granular cell myoblastoma was confirmed. According to all criteria the tumour histologically answered the description of the described tumour, and as it was also partially found subcutaneously, pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia of the epithelia had occurred. As the alteration was completely excised no further treatment was necessary, and two years after the operation there had been no recurrence. The reasons for the development of this tumour and its histogenetic origin have still not been completely explained. However new immunocystochemical examinations tend to support the neural theory of its occurrence. Thus, this change should be kept in mind during differential diagnostics of changes which resemble mucocele, fibromas, pyogenous granulomas, papillomas, angiomas and planocellular carcinomas. |

| Abstract: |
The paper presents two cases of clinical application of polyglycolicpolylactic co-polymer Fisiograft. In the first case periodontal abscess and damaged interradicular alveolar bone of tooth 46 was diagnosed. Interradicular damage to the bone was visible after opening the mucoperiosteal flap. Scaling of the root and careful elimination of the inflamed tissue was performed and the defect filled with Fisiograft implant (Ghimas S.p.A - Italy) in the form of gel and powder, moistened with blood and covered with a coronally positioned flap. Postoperatively the patient was advised to rinse her mouth with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate solution. The results of the treatment were monitored clinically and radiographically six months after the procedure. Probing the periodontal pockets before the procedure revealed a depth of 8 mm and loss of the level of periodontal attachment of 10 mm on tooth 46. Clinical evaluation six months after the procedure showed a reduction in the depth of the periodontal pocket from 8 to 4 mm and attachment level gain of 5 mm, which amounts to 50% of the original defect. In the second case, after raising the mucoperiosteal flap of tooth 21, an extensive intrabony defect was revealed, which involved several bony walls. After scaling and planing the root we filled the defect with a Fisiograft implant in the form of gel and powder, moistened with blood. Because of the activity of the periodontal pocket we prescribed Amoxicilin tablets 500 mg, 3 times daily for 5 days. Postoperatively, the patient was advised to rinse his mouth with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate solution. Six months after the procedure the clinical finding showed reduced depth of the periodontal pocket and gain of attachment level 4 mm, i.e. 44.5% of the original clinical defect. The radiograph showed reduced radiolucency of the alveolar bone of tooth 21, indicating the formation of new supporting alveolar bone. Thus, it can be said that the application of Fisiograft proved to be successful in regeneration of the alveolar intrabony defect. Six months after the procedure the radiograph showed considerably reduced radiolucency and depth of the periodontal pocket was reduced by around 50%.In the presented two cases the application of Fisiograft proved successful in the process of healing alveolar bone, damaged by periodontitis, and it is therefore proposed that this implant is applied in a larger number of subjects and further investigation carried out. |
