HISTORY OF DENTISTRY |
| Abstract: |
The object of the study was to investigate where and in what way iconography and homage to St. Appolonia, patron saint of the dental profession, can be found in the Franciscan province of St. Cyril and Methodius. The study included 30 monasteries and counties and data were collected by means of a questionnaire, electronic communication and the exhibition "Peace and Goodwill" in Zagreb. The material was analysed in tables and by photo-documentation. Nine altar statues and one altar painting of St. Appolonia are situated in 9 (30%) of the Franciscan churches investigated. The churches are mainly situated in north-west Croatia, which is a result of the socio-political and organisational influence of Central Europe in these areas. Iconographically the figures of St. Appolonia conform to the distinctive iconography of the Roman Catholic Church and include an element of local influence. The sculptures are made in wood, polychromed and gold plated. They range in height from 100 to 184 cm. A painting, oil on canvas, measures 254 x 142 cm. All the figures of St. Appolonia are on altars, indicating that the saint is very highly revered and homage to her is permanently firmly established in the spiritual tradition of the Franciscan Order. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to evaluate patients' satisfaction with their partial dentures in relation to some socio-economic variables. The aim was also to evaluate patients' satisfaction with denture retention, speech, aesthetics, chewing ability and comfort while wearing dentures. The influence of some factors, such as age, sex, marital status, level of education, smoking, chronic diseases, socio-economic status, ordinal number and age of thepresent dentures, on patients' satisfaction with partial dentures was also evaluated. A total of 165 patients with partial dentures took part in the study. There were 59 males and 106 females aged between 38 and 87 years. Patients graded their satisfaction with their partial dentures in total and then graded aesthetics, speech and retention, chewing ability and comfort while wearing dentures by using a scale from 1 to 5. Following a statistical analysis the following conclusions were made: 1. Patients were mostly satisfied with their partial dentures (the distribution of the scores of the patients' assessments was asymmetrical towards the highest scores in all examined categories). Only 3.2% of the patients were not absolutely satisfied with their partial dentures, 2. More then half of the examined patients scored all the examined variables in the best score category (5), 3. Patients of a higher level of education had higher criteria for the aesthetic appearance, as they assessed their partial denture aesthetics with a lower grades than patients with lower level of education. Males were less satisfied with the chewing ability of lower partial dentures (p<0.05) than females, 4. There was no significant difference in patients' assessments of the quality of their partial dentures between different age groups, ability of self-supporting life, socio-economic and economic status, marital status, smoking, presence of chronic diseases, number of previous dentures and age of present dentures (p>0.05). |

| Abstract: |
The continual progress in development of new dental materials for tooth fillings and the presence of those materials on the market confuse the dentist when choosing the most appropriate material. The purpose of this research was to carry aut a survey in order to find out what are the most frequently used materials for permanent tooth fillings, dentine adhesives and polymerization units in clinical practice. The survey covered 304 subjects (doctors/dentists) with experience ranging from 1 to 40 years of practice. The results show that Tetric Ceram (Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) is the most used composite material, Syntac (Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) the most used dentine adhesive and Heliolux (Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) the most used curing unit for photopolymerisation of composite materials in clinical practice. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of the investigation was to determine the mean values of selected craniofacial and gnathometric parameters and to evaluate the distribution of basic craniofacial types and subjects from the south Dalmatian region. The object was to record eventual variations on the basis of comparison with a comparable sample from north Croatia. The investigation was carried out on 100 subjects of both sexes, aged between 18 and 30 years from the south Dalmatian region. The findings for 200 homologous subjects according to sex and age from north Croatia were used for comparison of results. Customary anthropometric procedure was used to measure twelve variables, on the basis of which indexes for the head, face, forehead and palate were calculated. In the examined population, the results showed that according to the head index values mesocephalia predominated, and for the facial indeks leptoprosopia, while in the north Croatian population, brachycephalia and euriprosopia were most common. The mean value for the head index indicated a lower, wider forehead, and according to palate height index, a high palate was predominate in the subjects from the south Dalmatian region. |

| Abstract: |
During construction of dentures there is frequently a need for one or more reference planes. Various opinions have been expressed in literature on the mutual relations of reference planes used in prosthetic care of patients. On a sample of 60 cephalograms of patients with almost normal occlusion, seven variables were analysed. by roentgencephalometric method. The results of this study revealed the mean values of angles measured and their variability as well as their mutual correlation. Basic statistical parameters revealed significant variability of the occlusal plane inclination in the group of examinees with almost normal occlusion. The highest level of variability was found for the Camper's line - Occlusal line angle which indicates that the use of Camper's line to determine the occlusal plane is unreliable. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to stress the importance of periodical removal of hard and soft sediments as well as of dental surface polishing. A clinical examination was performed among 18 fifth year students of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. The use of Caries Risk Test (Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) showed the amount of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus in the saliva. Based an the results obtained, we polished the teeth with Proxyt pastes for cleaning and polishing, each being of different abrasive value, determined by the producer and labelled as RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasion). After polishing the test was repeated. The results achieved were compared to data previously obtained and showed that dental surface polishing and removal of hard dental sediments have been neglected. |

| Abstract: |
Internal resorption is the resorption of dentin which starts in the pulpal cavity either in the pulpal chamber or in the root canal. The autors describe many etiological factor but agree that its most frequent cause is either infection or trauma. These disorders initiative inflammatory response in the pulpal tissue. Disorders in vascularization can be seen in the production of granulation tissue and transformation of macrofagus similar cells from the mesenchymal tissue into multinuclear odontoclasts. With the formation of odontoclasts, which are similaar to osteoclasts, the resorption process can begin. Resorption process is diagnosed either during routine Rtg photography or if there is extensive resorption present and the perforation has been formed. Internal resorption can be fasr accelerating, and in some case slow accelerating and it can last for years. After diagnosis, the endodontic treatment is essential in all forms of internal resorption. Therapy of the internal resorption is divided in: 1. non surgical; 2. recalcification with calcium hydroxide; 3. surgical therapy. The choice of therapy is determined by the inclination of stomatologist and the extension and position of the pathological defect. The internal resorption therapy relates to final filling of root canal and the filling of resorption defect. Defect of the internal resorption is filled by method of lateral and vertical condensation and in the combination with a method of heated vertical condensation. The further rocess of internal resorption is interrupted if the filling is properly done, and therapy itself is considered successful when Rtg photography control taken after one year does not show any progression of the resorption process. |

| Abstract: |
In the second part of the article the authors describe techniques for dealing with reconstruction of the biologic width. The stress is on surgical techniques, from gingivectomy to apical repositioning with osseous surgery, and orthodontic forced eruption. Correct indication for each technique, and correct procedure, as well as equilibrated prosthetic reconstruction, may preserve the biologic width and prevent its new violation. |

| Abstract: |
Styloid syndrome is a condition in which an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament causes occasional pain in the neck, a feeling of a foreign body (in the pharynx?) or some other form of retromandibular-cervical pain. In adults the styloid process is approximately 25 mm long with a tip which is located between theexternal and internal carotid arteries, lateral to the pharyngeal wall and the tonsillar fossa.Ossification of the stylohyoid and stylomandibular ligament causes prolongation of the styloid process and clinical symptoms. There are three syndromes closely connected with the styloid process syndrome: Costen's, Trotter's and Myofacial painful syndrome. Diagnosis can be made by a clinical examination and palpation of the tonsillar fossa, during which pain is felt by the patient.Radiographic finding may show several possible variations: elongated, pseudoarticulated and segmented styloid process, and according to the calcification: peripheral, partial, complete or nodular type calcification. Treatment is primarily surgical. The physician's knowledge of possible clinical variations and diverse symptomatology is important. The authors present the case of a female patient with Stylohyoid Syndrome treated by surgical shortening of the elongated styloid process. |
