HISTORY OF DENTISTRY DENTISTS PORTRAITS AMSEL, VLADIMIR |
| Abstract: |
In the early morning of 14th September 2001 Prof. Vladimir Amšel, retired Professor of the School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb, died. A few hours beforehand we had visited him and shown our support in his fight against his illness. He had expressed a wish to say a last farewell to his colleagues, his pupils who carry on his work, and his profession, to which he wholeheartedly belonged. Although we were unable to make verbal contact we were by his side, "his boys", as he slowly relinquished his hold on life. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to determine correlation between the width of upper incisors (WUI) or the width between the tips of the upper canines (WTC), or the width between distoaproximal surfaces of upper canines (WDaC) with the width of the alae of the nose (WAN) or the width between the corners of the mouth (WCM) on a representative sample. The aim was also to calculate the ratio between the measured variables, which could be helpful in clinical practice. For this purpose two thousand individuals aged from 18 to 24 years, with intact frontal teeth were measured. There were 920 males and 1080 females.According to statistical analysis of the results it was concluded: 1. Statistically significant difference between males and females existed for all the measured variables (WAN, WCM, WUI, WTC and WDaC), i.e. males had bigger dimensions. 2.There was no significant difference between sexes for all the calculated ratios: WCM/WAN, WAN/WUI, WCM/WDaC, WAN/WTC, WDaC/WAN (p>0.05). 3. The width of the nose approximates to the width between the tips of the cusps of upper canines (1.08:1). The other calculated ratios are: WAN/WUI = 1.206:1; WCM:WDaC = 1.228:1, WDac:WAN = 1.158:1 and these ratios together with the measured mean values: WUI, WCT, WDaC in the examined population, both for men and women, could be helpful for the choice of the proper size of upper frontal artificial teeth and for their setting in the wax of the denture. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of the study was to determine whether the rate of cooling induced structural changes in a high-gold alloy, and whether these changes modified the bond strength between the gold alloy and hydrothermal ceramic. Before ceramic firing, the casts were submitted to fast (water), normal (air) or slow (in the furnace) cooling. Three-point bending test was used in a total of 15 specimens of defined dimensions. The ultimate force at which ceramic detachment from the metal surface occurred and bending strength were determined. The values of coefficient (k) and surface (S) as factors in the assessment of bond quality were calculated. Photographs of the specimen microstructure were made and values of the microhardness of both materials determined. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed no statistically significant difference in bond strength among the three types of specimens, suggesting that the mode of alloy cooling had no substantial effect either on the microstructure of the high-gold alloy or on the quality of bond between the gold alloy and hydrothermal ceramic. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Er:YAG laser in the root canal using bacteria of Enterococcus and Staphylococcus species. Eleven single-rooted teeth were instrumented, sterilized and ten of them inoculated with bacterial suspension of concentration 106 CFU/ml in brain heart broth. Nine samples were irradiated with Er:YAG laser (220 mJ/40 Hz/10 s) in two cycles with a pause of 15 s for cooling. One sample with bacterial suspension without irradiation was a positive control, and one sterile sample a negative control. After irradiation the samples were placed in vials with broth and the number of CFU/ml was determined by bacterial analysis after one and two weeks. Er:YAG laser did not completely sterilize any canal, but in three cases elimination of Staphylococcus aureus occurred. This indicates the possible better antibacterial effects of erbium laser in the root canal if appropriate energy delivery system could be applied. |

| Abstract: |
Recent studies suggest a connection between burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and the quantitiy and quality of saliva. The aim of our study was to determine quantities of salivary immunoglobulin A (sIgA), lysozyme and magnesium in unstimulated and stimulated saliva of patients with burning mouth syndrome and xerostomia. Salivary samples were obtained by sialometry. Salivary immunoglobulin A was determined by radial immunodiffusion according to Manzini, lysozyme levels were obtained according to Osserman and Lowlor, and magnesium was determined using atomic absorbance spectrophotometry. Levels of sIgA were decreased in stimulated whole saliva of patients with BMS and xerostomia when compared to those in unstimulated saliva (p<0.001). Lysozyme levels were also lower in stimulated whole saliva in such patients when compared to the levels in unstimulated saliva (p<0.001). Magnesium levels remain unchanged with regard to the salivary stimulation. The results of our study indicate that the quantity and quality of saliva could have an impact on symptoms of burning mouth syndrome. |

| Abstract: |
Chloroform was the most frequently used solvent for removing guttapercha from the root canal. However, dispute with regard to its safety prompted the use of new solvents. The aim of this study was to compare the time required for dissolving gutta-percha by eucalyptol, halothane and orange oil. Seventy single rooted teeth were sterilised, treated by conventional "step-back" technique and filled by cold lateral condensation technique, and stored in 0.9% NaCl solvent for 180 days. After which revision of the root filler was performed. The revision was considered complete when no signs of gutta-percha and the filler were visible on the metallic instruments and paper sticks. In view of the distribution of data on key variables, ANOVA, with "post hoc" tests was applied during the analysis of results. Statistically reliable difference was determined between the speed of dissolvability with eucalyptol and the speed with halothane and orange oil. |

| Abstract: |
Different methods for the choice of artificial teeth for complete dentures are described in this study. The first known theory, based upon Hippocrates division of human temperaments into neurotic, sanquinic, biliar and asthenic types dates from the last century and says that the teeth form should be chosen according to a person's temperament. The temperament theory was replaced by Leon Williams geometric theory (at the beginning of this century) which correlates tooth form and face shape. According to Williams the shape of upper central incisor is in accordance with the shape of the face, i.e., central upper incisor is reduced and rotated facial form. The Williams theory is the most famous theory in the world, which is mentioned in almost all of the textbooks. The first theory after Williams on the choice of artificial teeth for removable dentures was the dentogenic theory of Frush and Fisher, i.e. SPA theory (sex, personality, age). The choice of artificial teeth relied on sex, personality and age, as women have smaller second upper incisors than men, stronger personalities have more pronounced canines and older populations have darker and more abrasive teeth than younger populations, which should be considered during the teeth choice. Other theories are as follows: the theory of aesthetic triangle which correlates tooth shape, face form and residual ridge form; the theory of individual preferences; the theory which recommends the use of old photographs, teeth which are extracted or plaster casts made before extraction, the theory which calculates the width and the length of the central upper incisors from old photographs, etc. However, the importance of the tooth setting and the possibility of reshaping the teeth during setting and contouring of artificial gingiva is also mentioned in the paper. |

| Abstract: |
Based on a review of available literature sources on the treatment of large mandibular cysts, a comparison of various treatment approaches has been performed in order to identify similarities and differences between the treatment approaches used by domestic and foreign authors. The review shows that basic principles of the treatment of large mandibular cysts are changing in Croatia as well as abroad. Marsupialisation methods are being gradually replaced by different methods which all primarily close the bone defect, as in the Partsch II method. Methods differ only in the approach used to close it. The common goal of all these methods is to reduce the postoperative bone defect in order to reduce the possibility of coagulation, infections and to heal the wounds primarily. These methods lead to significantly reduced duration of the treatment of large mandibular cysts. The choice of the most suitable method is left to the surgeon, who, based on his experience and results obtained with a particular method in the past, has to choose the method which will pose the least possible stress on the patient and ensure the shortest treatment time. |

| Abstract: |
An immediate complete denture is a restoration for lost natural teeth and associated tissues, which is inserted into the patient's mouth immediately following the extraction of the remaining teeth. The purpose of the paper is to draw the dentist/practitioner's attention to the need for immediate complete denture fabrication. The aims, advantages and disadvantages of immediate dentures as well as contraindications are described in detail.Modern procedures for immediate complete denture fabrication as well as instructions to patients about wearing the denture and mouth and denture hygiene are given.A need for a timely rebasing of immediate dentures and adjustment of the occlusion is also pointed out. The functional, aesthetic and psychological success of immediate dentures depends on correct indication, diagnosis, treatment planning and precisely executed fabrication procedures. |
