| Abstract: |
The aim of the study was to assess the caries prevalence and oral hygiene in groups of adolescents living in different Hungarian localities and to establish correlations with socio-economic factors. Examinations of caries and oral hygiene were performed in 586 14-16 year old children. The percentage of caries free children was 5.1%, the DMFT and DMFS values were 6.97±4.67 and 9.95±7.94 respectively. The VPI index was 41.6±32.7% (mean±S.D.), and showed positive correlation with the caries prevalence. The DMFT and DMFS values, as well as VPI decreased as the educational level of the father increased. The number of siblings had a worsening effect on DMFT, DMFS and VPI values. There was some relationship between the previous fluoride prophylaxis and decrease of DMF values, although the difference proved to be statistically non significant. These findings indicate the necessity of organized dental preventive measures. |

| Abstract: |
The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a young adult non-patient population and to investigate the possibility of an association between TMD and occlusal factors. A questionnaire including data from history and clinical functional examination was used in the study. All subjects (a total of 230) were male (army recruits), from 19 to 28 years of age (mean 21.3 ± 2.1). The study indicated that 38% of subjects had at least one symptom (subjects with slight, moderate and severe discomfort), while 45% of subjects had at least one sign of TMD. Spearman's rank correlation test showed weak but statistically significant correlation (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01) between occlusal factors and TMD in a young adult non-patient population. Clinical signs and symptoms of TMD were weakly correlated with some occlusal factors (malocclusion traits (Angle classes II/1, II/2, III, and crossbite), slide between RCP and ICP ≥ 1 mm, midline discrepancy ≥ 2 mm, nonworking side interferences, horizontal overlap ≥ 5 mm) and parafunctional habits (teeth clenching and teeth grinding). However, the importance of association between TMD, occlusal factors and parafunctional habits should not be overstated (weak correlation), since this may lead to neglect of the many other causes of orofacial pain and dysfunction in a biologically multifactorial system. |

DENTAL IMPRESSION MATERIALS SILICONES |
| Abstract: |
The aim of the study was to determine which dimensional changes occur in two types of low viscosity condensation-type silicone materials (Xantopren - Bayer, Germany and RTV - Bosnalijek, Sarajevo, BiH), when prepared in different conditions (mixed by hand or mechanically, with and without the addition of 3 drops of water) a different time period after setting.A total of 56 samples were prepared, 7 samples of each silicone (Xsantopren, RTV) in each examined condition (mixed by hand or mechanically, with or without the addition of 3 drops of water). Specimens were poured into a mould until set. The samples were then removed from the mould and stored at room temperature. Using an optical instrument SIP-414 with a digital microscope, dimensional measurements at different time intervals after setting (2, 4, 8 24 and 48 hours) were made. The referent value was the measure of the mould, which was 24.7 mm.The examined silicone condensation-type impression materials, mixed by hand or mechanically with or without addition of 3 drops of water, showed continuous contraction. The referent value (mould dimension) was greater than all other values measured 2, 4, 8, 24 and 48 hours after setting. The longer the period of sample storage, the greater the silicone contraction. χ2 test revealed that mean values measured in this study are significantly smaller than the referent value, depending on the period of the material storage. Contraction was greater than 0.5% after 2 hours of storage, regardless of mixing condition. The examined silicone condensation-type impression materials showed significant contraction, which increased during the period of storage, no matter how the material was prepared (mechanically mixed, or by hand; with or without addition of water). The results indicate that silicone condensation-type impressions should be poured into hard stone as soon as possible, to preserve the desired accuracy. |

DENSITOMETRY BONE AND BONES RADIOGRAPHY, DENTAL |
| Abstract: |
The precision of a method of microdensitometry on digitized images, using six step copper stepwedge (SW), was studied. Two retroalveolar radiographs were made for each of the six examined patients. Lynotype-Hell (8-bit, 300DPI) transparent scanner was used to scan the radiographs. All the images were, prior to the measurements, inverted. The digitized radiographs were saved in the Issa-program for archiving radiographs, while the optical density (OD) was measured by using software Scion image for 6 steps of the SW and 7 regions of interest (ROI). The gray levels (GLs) were converted into the ODs for both images by formula OD = -log Ii /255, where Ii = measured intensity. ODs of each step of the SW were correlated with the copper thickness of the related step and the regression formula was thus derived from the relationship of the OD and the actual thickness of the related step through the third degree polynomial function. The results revealed that the method detects mineral bone changes, i.e. OD changes, which surpass more than 7% of density on the images. |

| Abstract: |
In 28 young, healthy individuals the quantity of salivary peroxidase was determined with the aim of evaluating normal ranges for salivary peroxidase, to determine whether any differences in SP values between unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva exist and to find any possible differences between sexes. We can conclude that no statistically significant differences between salivary peroxidase values in unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva were found. No statistically significant differences were found between female and male individuals in salivary peroxidase values, either in unstimulated or stimulated whole saliva. |

ADHESIVES DENTIN-BONDING AGENTS SENSITIVITY AND SPECIFICITY PAIN, POSTOPERATIVE |
| Abstract: |
Increasing requirements for the longevity of filling and marginal integration has influenced the development of new materials in restorative procedure on enamel and dentine. These requirements have contributed to the development of several generations of composite materials and dentine adhesives. Adhesion of the restorative material on the enamel is succesfully enhanced with the use of enamel adhesives, while bonding to dentine, because of its specific constitution and wetness of its surface, is not always acceptable and longlasting. The latest generation of dentine adhesives shows better bonding values, better sealing of the dentine surface and is simpler to handle than earlier generations of dentine adhesives. The aim of this study was to determine in 453 small medium and deep cavities the clinical existence of postrestorative sensitivity after the application of “Excite” one-bottle enamel-dentine adhesive under a composite resin filling one and three months after the application of the composite filling. After one month 21 teeth showed sensitivity of 1st, 2nd and 3th degree, and after three months only four teeth showed sensitivity of 1st and 2nd degree. This confirmed the fact that “Excite” enamel-dentine adhesive can successfully decrease the presence of postrestorative sensitivity. |

DENTAL OCCLUSION DENTURE, COMPLETE |
| Abstract: |
Correct occlusal relationships on complete dentures are part of the success in prosthetic treatment of edentulous patients. As denture base materials and fabrication procedures cannot provide dimensionally accurate complete dentures, it is necessary to check the occlusion. The relation between artificial teeth on complete dentures has a significant impact on even loading of denture foundations and optimum stabilisation of dentures during wearing. A remount procedure begins with fabrication of remount casts, determination and transfer of interarch relationships into the articulator. Deflective contacts on dentures are eliminated by selective grinding carried out in the articulator in the intercuspal position and by excursive tooth guided movements. The purpose is to represent a remount procedure as a constituent part of complete denture fabrication procedures in everyday practice. When selecting a dynamic concept of occlusion, priority is given to unbalanced dentures, i.e. to canine guided occlusion and/or to the concept of unilateral occlusal balance. |

| Abstract: |
The purpose of the paper is to present magnetic resonance imaging as a useful technique in establishing a diagnosis of functional disorders of the temporomandibular joint, on the basis of case studies, as this technique is not yet widely used in this country. The MR images were used for assessment of normal functional anatomy, as well as forms of functional disorders of the temporomandibular joints (disc displacement with and without reduction). Standard oblique sagittal planes with T1 sequences obtained using Magneton Impact (Siemens) apparatus at 1.0 T with surface coil of 10 cm diameter were used. The MR images were taken in the open mouth and closed mouth positions in the oblique sagittal plane vertical to the longitudinal axis of the condyle.Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive technique using magneticfield and radio frequency pulses instead of ionising radiation for image creation. Of all known radiologic techniques, magnetic resonance imaging proved to be the best technique of choice for visualization of soft and hard tissues of the temporomandibular joints. In general, the magnetic resonance technique is used in cases of doubtful diagnosis and therapeutic failure of temporomandibular disorders. Apart from diagnostics, the technique can also be used in assessment of various methods of treatment of temporomandibular disorders (where conditions before and after treatment are assessed). It is also used for better understanding of the pathophysiology and biomechanics of temporomandibular joints, which has been shown in numerous scientific studies. |
