CROWNS FATIGUE |
| Abstract: |
A temporary crown or bridge is the best protection of a prepared tooth from pain, saliva contamination and caries propagation. It must have all the properties and qualities of a permanent restoration in order to properly function in the oral cavity. The aim of the investigation was to determine the influence of two types of cervical preparation of the abutment, as well as the influence of cyclic thermal changes (5°C-55°C), on the dynamic strength of temporary crowns made of poly(methilmethacrylate) resin. The fatigue tests were performed in an Amsler's high frequency pulzator under cyclic dynamic loading in the range from 400N to 1000N.The results of the investigation showed negative reciprocal relationship between the values of the dynamic load and the number of cycles endured without the fracture of the sample (r=-0.98). The thermocycled samples demonstrated significantly lower fracture resistance than the nonthermocycled samples (p>0.05). |

| Abstract: |
When planning retention one of the most important tasks is to ensure that the construction, size and form of the retentive elements enable the transfer of forces which the loaded tissues can accept without damage. The use of magnets fabricated from biocompatible materials is becoming increasingly used as a means of retention for total and partial prosthetic replacements and resectional prostheses. The purpose of this study was to examine factors on which the strength of retentive forces Sm-Co5 and Nd-Fe-B magnets depend. The samples were divided into two groups: 28 pairs of Sm-Co5 magnets and 28 pairs of Nd-Fe-B magnets. The heights of the measured magnets were 2, 2.5 and 3 mm. Each sample consisted of a group with lateral force and a group without lateral force. The force values were measured by means of a device for measuring magnetic retentive forces, which enables the measurement of retentive forces of different combinations of permanent magnets and ferromagnetic materials. The results are presented in figures and tables. The basic factors that influence the magnitude of the retentive magnetic force are the type of magnet, size, their mutual distance and the presence of lateral forces. The values obtained indicate which sizes and thickness of the magnetic pairs should be used for the desired force of retention. |

| Abstract: |
In this study magnetic fields in dental surgeries were measured by means of a specially constructed device with a Hall's probe. The purpose was to measure the mean square distance of the magnetic field in relation to the position of dental apparatus in the area. The dana obtained were analysed by the method of simple statistical regression. The study showed that the force of the magnetic field of the majority of the examined apparatus is harmless to man. The force decreases with increasing distance from the source of radiation. Older apparatus radiates stronger than newer products. |

| Abstract: |
When more than half of the crown of the endodontically treated tooth is missing, reinforcement with a cast post or a prefabricated dowel is needed. Four factors affect dowel retention: diameter, design, length, and employed cement. The purpose of this study was to measure the influence of root-canal preparation depth on retention force, and evaluate the commonly used principles. Thirty teeth were divided into 3 groups, root canals were prepared to 5.7 and 9 mm, and dowels were cemented. After 40 hours the tensile force needed to dislodge the dowels was recorded. At 5 mm depth it was 174.17 ± 29.45 N, at 7 mm 235.5 ± 46.93 N, and at 9 mm 255 ± 72.74 N. There was significant difference between dowel retention at 1/3 and at 1/2 of the root depth (5 and 7 mm). Difference between retention at 1/2 and at 2/3 of the root depth (7 and 9 mm) was not significant. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to determine the in vitro antimicrobial activity of calcium hydroxide root canal sealer (Apexit) in direct contact with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens and Staphylococcus aureus. The direct contact test (DCT) was performed. The sealer was mixed and placed on the side wall of microtiter plate wells and 10 μl of bacterial suspension (106 bacteria) was placed onto its surface. Bacteria were in direct contact with the sealer for 1 hour at 37°C. BHI broth (250 μl) was then added and the growth of each strain was measured after 1 hour, 6 hours, 20 hours and 24 hours. After 1 hour the number of E. coli and P. aeruginosa decreased to 7-9 x 10 3 and S. marcescens to 7 x 10 2 bacteria. The number of S. aureus was 1.4 x 10 5 bacteria. Six hour samples showed that the number of P. aeruginosa decreased to 10 1 and gram-positive S. aureus to 7.5 x 10 4. After 20 hours only S. aureus (10 1 bacteria) survived after prior contact with Apexit. The 24-hour samples showed complete bacterial growth inhibition of all the bacterial strains tested in DCT with Apexit. |

| Abstract: |
In this study the treatment of impacted canines during a 20-year period was analysed. The purpose of the analysis was to determine which type of treatment was most frequently used according to the patient age, and to determine if there were any changes in approach and surgical technique during this period.Six patient groups were formed according to their age. Data for each group was obtained, statistically analysed, and charts made.Out of the total 44186 patients 1866 had impacted canines (4.22%). Alveolotomy was most often used, i.e. 1451 out of a total of 1903 operations (76.2%). Corticotomy was used in 436 (23%), and transplantation in 16 cases (0.8 %). Alveolotomies were mostly performed on patients older than 30 years, and corticotomy and replantation were mostly used in patients 15-19 years old. |

| Abstract: |
Closure of a defect in the head and neck area by second intention is an alternative to primary reconstruction. In order to achieve a satisfactory post-operational, aesthetic result it is important to choose the size and localisation of the dermal defect, and to educate the patient on care of the wound for the duration of treatment. As a rule the concave areas of the facial skin are the most suitable for healing by second intention. In cases of well-established indications healing by second intention is a method with excellent esthetical post-operational result. However, if the result is aesthetically unacceptable, the possibility of performing other surgical methods of reconstruction, remains. |

| Abstract: |
An unusual case is presented of a patient with planocellular carcinoma of the mandible which developed through transformation of the epithelium of an odontogenic cyst. The transformation of the epithelium of the cyst into a planocellular carcinoma was histologically verified. Apart from a swelling on the chin there were no other signs of disease in the clinical status. After histological verification of the tumour a wide excision of the skin of the chin and part of the lip was performed, segmental resection of the mandible and selective dissection of both sides of the neck. The skin defect was reconstructed by local rotating flaps and the mandible by a microvascular flap from the fibula. |

| Abstract: |
This paper describes endodontic treatment of first central upper incisors which have been unsuccessfully treated for a long period as a consequence of inadequate procedure. The root canals of the problematic teeth were obturated for seven days, by correct proper endodontic treatment.Three months after root canal obturation, the teeth were without symptoms. |
