| Abstract: |
The purpose of this study was to examine how WIRONIT® alloy behaves in phosphate buffer at pH 6.0 (which simulate human saliva) over a relatively long period of time and to establish the type and amount of ions released from the casting alloy. The study also attempted to determine the influence of the time period, during which the casting alloy was exposed to the phosphate buffer at pH 6.0. and 15.8 height) were tested. Release of ions was measured on ten occasions: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 14, 21 and 30 days. An analysis of the solution into which samples of the tested alloy were plunged using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) showed that cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni) ions were released during the month. Co ions were released from the base Co-Cr-Mo alloy in the greatest amount while Fe ions were released in the smallest amount. The results of this study indicate that the time of exposure to the phosphate buffer at pH 6.0 had statistically significant influence (p<0.01) in the release of all detected ions from the Co-Cr-Mo alloy. |

The purpose of this study is to determine the changes in the posterior and anterior facial heights as well as in their proportions that occur between the age of 10 years and adulthood in subjects with normal occlusion in Croatian population. The investigation was carried out on 199 lateral cephalometric radiographs of patients divided into five age groups. The radiographs were traced and the following measurements have been derived : s-go = posterior face height; n m = anterior face height and s-go/n-m % = face height ratio. Posterior face height dimensions (s-go) in total sample showed an increase of 10,72 mm between 10 years of age to adulthood (12.9%). The mean anterior face height (n-m) value in whole sample increases from 112,99 to 123,49 mm which is 10,5 mm or 8,5 %. Anterior-posterior face heights ratio showed slight increase from 63,97 to 67,14 % from the youngest to the oldest age group. All measured face dimensions are higher in males than in females in all groups. |

The object of the study was to determine the incidence of the following oral diseases, Aphthae recidivante, Lichen ruber planus, symptoms of xerostomia and stomatopyrosis, and oral parafunction, bruxism and dysgeusia and to examine their possible connection with different intensities of psychological characteristics of self-esteem, anxiety and neuroticism in a sample of inhabitants from the Gorski Kotar area. The study consisted of 277 subjects in whom a detailed oral examination and oral testing were performed. Psychological testing was performed by using part of pychotest “18 PF”.The examination showed that in the area of Fuæina and Lokava oral parafunction most frequently occurred (in 36.1% of subjects) aphthae lesions (19.2%), followed by bruxism (13.7%), xerostomia (12.27%) and stomatopyrosis (10.3%). Taste disorders (2.3%) and oral lichen (1.2%) rarely occurred. The psychological examination indicated that there was a tendency towards a high level of self-esteem, low level of anxiety and still lower level of general neuroticism. Positive correlation was determined between the occurrence of xerostomia, stomatopyrosis, recurring aphthae and bruxism in relation to the occurrence of anxiety, and stomatopyrosis and xerostomia with neuroticism. The findings were statistically significant, although on the basis of such descriptive examinations it is impossible to claim that the examined psychological characteristics are the cause of the occurrence of these diseases, only that they are significantly connected with their occurrence. |

| Abstract: |
The significance of occlusal interferences in the aetiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has been questioned in numerous past and recent articles of dental literature. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between clinical diagnoses of TMD and different types of occlusal intereferences (centric interferences (retruded contact position (RCP) - intercuspal position (ICP) slide greater than 1 mm), working interferences, and nonworking interferences during lateral and protrusive mandibular movements) in a young adult nonpatient population. A questionnaire including data from history and clinical functional examination was used in the study. All subjects (a total of 230) were male (conscripts), from 19 to 28 years of age (mean 21.3 ± 2.1). The prevalence of occlusal interferences in percentage in 230 young adult non-patients, 65% had no occlusal interferences during examination of the functional state of occlusion, while 14% of subjects had centric interferences (RCP-ICP slide greater than 1 mm), 5% of subjects had working interferences and 16% of subjects had nonworking interferences during lateral and protrusive mandibular movements. Statistical analysis (Chi square test) did not show any significant differences in the distrubution of occlusal interferences between the group of subjects with the clinical diagnoses of TMD and the group of asymptomatic subjects. We concluded that clinical diagnoses of TMD (muscle and temporomandibular joint disorders) were not associated with different types of occlusal interferences. This study focused on a non-patient population of young adult males and the results may not be applicable for the general population. |

| Abstract: |
The study evaluates the effect of collagen bioresorbable membrane as a pulp capping material. Experiments were carried out on mongrel dogs. The dogs were anesthetized and teeth were isolated by rubber dum. In all animals, along the buccal side, class V cavities were prepared on two maxillary and mandibular incisors. The pulp chambers were exposed and bioresorbable collagen membrane Bio Gide was placed on the pulp wound in the first group of the teeth. In the second group the pulp wound was covered with a sterile Teflon disk and in the third group the cavities were closed by Ketac-Silver cementum only. The cavities in the first two groups of teeth were permanently closed by Ketac-Silver cementum. After six weeks the specimen teeth were extracted and prepared for histological examination. The histological findings of the specimens treated only with Ketac-Silver cementum showed complete necrosis of the pulp tissue. Two samples treated with Teflon disks showed complete necrosis of the pulp, while on six samples partial loss of morphologic structure could be seen. On the specimens treated with collagen bioresorbable membranes the pulp tissue preserved its vitality to a much greater extent. Particularly noticeable was a better blood supply in the pulp, with an increased number of blood vessels. The creation of a reparatory bridge was not noticed in any of the tested samples. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of the occlusal surfaces of lower molars in a sample of the Croatian population.Classification of the characteristics of the occlusal surface of molars was determined according to the standards for characterisation of morphological variants of permanent teeth, of ASU (Arizona State University - Dentoanthropological System of the State University of Arizona). On the basis of the obtained results of the shape of grooves in lower molars, with regard to the evolutive process in these teeth, it can be concluded that the first lower molar is the most conservative. The high frequency of + shape was significant in the second lower molar. As + shape can be taken as the highest evolutive stage of the conservative Y shape, i.e. the beginning of the most developed X shape, the second lower molar can be said to be in the transitive stage, and thus with its attained evolutive level it is definitely closer to the lower third molar. The third molar reached the highest developmental shape in the formation of the occlusal surfaces of lower molars. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical-anatomical peculiarities of edentulous mandibular dental segments (eMDS), situated in the posterior mandible, as well as to estimate the possibility of dental implantation for every clinical-anatomical eMDS type. One hundred and ninety-eight patients were examined, 88 male and 110 female. Orthopantomography, computer tomography, clinical examination using special ridge - mapping calipers for measurement of alveolar process width were employed to estimate eMDS. Three hundred anf fifty-three screw-shaped single-stage OSTEOFIX Dental Implant System implants were inserted. In 346 (98.02%) cases implantation was successful. Concerning the results of the eMDS measurements, the literature data suggested the division of posterior mandible dental segments into the following three clinical - anatomical types: type I - atrophy of eMDS is absent or if present, proper implantation is available; type II - simultaneousimplantation is available only with augmentation of the alveolar ridge; type III - only delayed implantation is available after augmentation of the alveolar ridge. |

| Abstract: |
Metal partial denture framework is a constituent part of each metal partial denture. Its fabrication requires precision of both the technician and the dentist - from the initial phase of planning this prosthetic restoration, during impression taking, making of stone casts, cast duplication, modelling by means of wax patterns, flasking of duplicate casts, heating, glowing and casting of the metal construction, elimination of sprues and sandblasting, until final polishing of the casting and its adjustment on a stone cast and in the patient’s mouth.Sophisticated equipment plays an important part in technological fabrication procedures: robust and strong technical motor, parallelometer, thermostatic bowl for the duplication material, sandblasting device, device for mechanical polishing and electropolishing, glowing furnace, and finally, a special casting device based on induced electric current. |

| Abstract: |
Two cases of odontogenic keratocysts are presented of which the first occurred on the opposite side of the jaw after an operation for a follicular cyst, and the other recurred within a relatively short period. In neither case was the existence of Gorlin-Goltzov syndrome possible. Both odontogenic keratocysts were surgically treated by enucleation of the cystic capsule and postoperative intraoral suction. In the second case the procedure was repeated due to a recurrence. The fact that permanent intraoral postoperative suction ensures the healing of mandibular bone tissue in a relatively short time, it had no influence on the possibility of the development of a recurrence during the treatment of an odontogenic keratocyst. The authors therefore conclude that during the treatment of odontogenic keratocysts the surgical method used is not important if the surgical method used is conservative. In such cases the marsupialisation method should be completely abandoned. Other conservative surgical methods include the risk of recurrence, and should the recurrence occur repeatedly there is a possibility of the keratocyst penetrating into the soft tissue where it is more difficult to treat surgically. The authors consider that by analysing the relevant clinical sample it is necessary to calculate how often severe recurrences of odontogenic keratocysts occur with expansion into the soft tissue or other perioral structures. Thus these data could be used during the treatment of recurrences of odontogenic keratocysts, in view of the perspectives which exist in the treatment of all locally invasive odontogenic formations. |

| Abstract: |
Aesthetic inadequacy due to hypodoncy of the upper left first premolar of a 20 yearold patient was detected by clinical and radiological examination. After a certain period of time space reduction had occurred because of shifting of a permanent upper canine tooth in the distal direction to the place of the second upper premolar, and the gap created corresponded to the width of the upper canine tooth. By a minimal traumatic therapy procedure we substituted the canine tooth by using fibres, adhesive procedure and composite materials. |
