Abstract: |
Pain is known to be a frequent reason for the patient’s arrival to the dental clinic. The aim of this study was to determine how often patients come to the dental clinic because of toothache or pain in the oral cavity; how high the percentage of acute or chronic pain, and the distribution of the aforementioned pains according to the sex of the patients.Examination of the frequency of pain in dental patients was carried out on a sample of 2,735 subjects during a period of approximately one year. Pain was determined in 16.49% of patients and the remaining 83.51% of patients were without pain. There were slightly more female patients (54%) than male (46%), although correlation between pain and sex of the patients was not statistically significant. The higher number of female patients was the result of the greater number of female patients admitted. With regard to the duration of pain, acute pain was significantly more frequent (around 84%) than chronic pain (around 16%). Within the structure of acute and chronic pain odontalgia was most frequent in 89% of all the acute pains and in 90% of all chronic pains, which was significantly more than all other types of pain. The frequency of acute odontalgia, with respect to the total number of admitted patients, amounted to 12.36% of patients and chronic odontalgia 2.38% of patients. |

Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to determine the appearance of odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) and keratocyst-like lesions ( KLL) in patients with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, according to age and gender of participants, and in relation to the place of origin (mandible, maxilla, soft tissues, which include the mucosa of the alveolar ridge, skin of the nose and face, parotid gland together with maxillary sinuses). From 1965 until 1998, 58 OKC were found in 30 patients with Gorlin Goltz syndrome and confirmed by histopathologic analysis. Patients were aged from 10 to 90 years. Average age of the patients with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome was 33.71 years. Average age in males was 35.53 years and in females 31.12 years. OKC connected with Gorlin Goltz syndrome were more frequently found in males (58.62%) compared to the females (41.38%). The peak incidence of OKC in patients with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome was between ages 21-30 years. According to the location, OKC were found predominantly in the mandible (60.34%), the maxilla (15.52%), soft tissues (13.79%), and in maxillary sinuses (10.34%). |

ALVEOLAR BONE LOSS + etiology DENTURE, COMPLETE + adverse effects |
Abstract: |
Alveolar bone loss (RRR) is a continuous process following tooth extraction, more pronounced during the first few month after the tooth extraction than later. The RRR in the mandible is twice that of the maxilla during a 1-year period and the mandibular: maxillary resorption ratio increases further to 4:1 after 7 years. The RRR results in reduction of face height and counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. So far, the etiology of RRR has not been elucidated. It has been speculated that both systemic and local factors contribute. However, one of the local factors is daytime or daytime and night time denture wearing. The aim of this study was to analyze the rate of RRR in five different regions of both jaws on lateral cephalograms of 100 complete denture wearers during a one-year period and to compare the rate of RRR in daytime only and daytime + night-time denture wearers. The height of residual ridges was measured on 5 different sites at the delivery of the dentures and a year later using a calibrated grid. The results revealed significant RRR in the one year period (p<0.01), which was 2.5x bigger in the mandible than in the maxilla. Higher rate of RRR was recorded at frontal sites of the maxillary and mandibular residual ridges compared to lateral sites (p<0.01). Night-time denture wearing made no significant influence on the rate of RRR on any of the five examined sites of the maxilla or the mandible (p>0.05). |

CHLOROFORM MUTAGENICITY TESTS |
Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to examine mutagenic activity of four commercially available gutta-percha solvents by means of the Salmonella/ microsome assay. The examined solvents were: chloroform, orange oil, eucalyptus oil and halothane in amounts of 10 μl, 30 μl, 50 μl, 100 μl and 200 μl. Standard plate incorporation Ames test was preformed by using two tester strains of Salmonella typhimurium, TA 98 and TA 100, with metabolic activation of S9. The results showed toxicity of eucalyptus oil in all aliquots, orange oil in aliquots of 50 μl and above and chloroform in aliquots of 100 μl and 200 μl, but all four substances responded negative to the Ames test. These results indicate that the tested solvents do not possess mutagenic activity toward the Salmonella strains used. |

Abstract: |
Enamel and dentin are, by their very chemical structure, two different substrates which necessitate different preparation before placing of composite resin. The aim of this study was to show how various enamel and dental pretreatment methods (“total etch” technique and self etching adhesives) affect the quality of bonding with composite resin. The results obtained showed optimal etching time, using 37% orthophospohoric acid, of 20 seconds for enamel and 10 seconds for dentin. |

PERIODONTAL DISEASES + microbiology |
Abstract: |
This paper presents a critical evaluation of the use of systemic antimicrobial treatment in periodontal disease. Recognizing specific types of periodontal infections can significantly influence the choice of antimicrobial treatment. Therapy should be tailored to differences in antibiotic susceptibility between various periodontal pathogens. Many different antibiotic regimens have been described in the literature, making the choice in clinical practice difficult. Numerous studies have examined the impact of systemic antibiotic treatment in stopping the progression of periodontal diseases. Major candidates for antibiotic therapy are patients whose disease continues to progress despite conventional mechanical treatment. Antibiotics can also be used in patients with localized aggressive or other early developed forms of periodontitis, as well as in patients with systemic diseases affecting the course of periodontitis. They have proven to be beneficial as an adjunct to standard therapy. Serious side-effects of systemic antibiotic treatment, such as development of resistance and increase in opportunistic microorganisms, do not justify their use in the treatment of chronic, slowly-progressive forms of periodontal diseases. |

Abstract: |
Endodontic procedure requires removal of the pulp tissue and necrotic dentine, as well as a significant amount of healthy hard dental tissue, which results in reducing the resistance of the tooth to the occlusal loading forces. Restoration of such a tooth needs to satisfy requirements for retention of the restorative material, its resistance, as well as the resistance of the remaining dental tissue to occlusal forces, good coronal and intraradicular obturation and also aesthetic requirements.Postendodontic treatment includes the following procedures: replacement of lost tissues using alloplastic materials directly or indirectly (amalgam, composite resin and glass-ionomer cement fillings or inlay, onlay or overlay restorations); the alloplastic material crown restorations using intracanal posts and parapulpal pins; the alloplastic material core buildup with or without intracanal posts and parapulpal pins covered with prosthetic crown; restoration of lost tooth structure using laboratory made post and core covered with prosthetic crown. Sealing of endodontic cavity using one of the alloplastic materials would be the treatment of choice in uncomplicated cases, whereas in severely damaged teeth ensuring remaining tooth structure by vertical stabilization and the prosthetic crown would be necessary. The choice of procedure depends on the severity of crown damage, the tooth position in the arch, occlusal contacts, morphology of root canal spaces, functional and aesthetic aspects, financial ability and available time for performing the procedure. The correct indication evaluation respecting all steps of the chosen procedure will provide long term survival of the postendodontically treated tooth in the stomatognathic system. |

BRUXISM |
Abstract: |
Bruxism exists as long as humanity; since barbarian times, through the Bible and christianity until the modern stressful age. According to American Sleep Disorders Association, the prevalence of bruxism varies from 5 to 20 per cent. This difference can be related to the lack of awareness in eighty per cent of the popullation that has some form of teeth clenching and/or grinding. Many studies have been published, but the results are still contradictory. There is a large scale of different etiological and therapeutical approaches presented in the scientific literature, but the main problem - bruxism in every day practice often remains undetected and badly treated. |

OSTEOMA NEURALGIA |
Abstract: |
A case of a patient with osteoma of the lower jaw is presented. Osteoma caused compression of the mental nerve and neuralgiform pain. During an intraoral examination, osseous deformity of the mandibula was not found. Diagnosis was confirmed by X-ray, which showed enostosis or a central osteoma. The presentation describes the surgical technique of external decompression by which the nerve epineural integument is released from the pressure caused by the benign osseous formation. Six months after the surgery the patient had no symptoms and had normal sensibility in the lower jaw and no irregularities. |
