| Abstract: |
The object of the study was to determine the size of the mandibular angle, height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus, and to compare the obtained results, depending on the type of skeletal orthodontic anomaly, age and gender of the subject. Seventy-seven subjects participated in the study (30 male and 47 female) with diagnosed anomalies of open bite, mandibular prognathism and Class II/2 malocclusion, classified into three age groups. The following variables were measured on a laterolateral cephalometric radiograph: mandibular angle, height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus. The mandibular angle was smallest in the subjects with over bite (average 123°), largest in patients with open bite (average 135°) and in subjects with progeny it amounted to an average 130°. Statistically significant difference was found between the size of the mandibular angle and the type of anomaly (p<0.05). Statistically significant difference was determined between linear skeletal variables and age groups (p<0.05). With regard to the values of the height of the ramus and length of the mandibular corpus statistically significant difference was found between the first age group (6-12 years) and the third age group (16-18 years) (p<0.05). In the male subjects values for linear skeletal variables were higher than the same variables measured in female subjects, although the difference was not statistically significant. |

MALOCCLUSION OPEN BITE |
| Abstract: |
The object of the study was to determine morphologic characteristics in subjects with skeletal open bite and increased mandibular angle; correlation between the depth of the over bite and values of the size of the angle of the mandibular base, maxillary base and intermaxillary angle; correlation between the depth of the over bite with values of anterior and posterior facial height and dentoalveolar compensatory mechanism in vertical type growth. The sample consisted of 77 laterolateral cephalograms of subjects with skeletal open bite of both genders, aged from 13 to 18 years. It was determined that 49.4% of the subjects had open bite, while 50.6% of the subjects were compensated, i.e. 41.5% had normal over bite and 9.1% deep bite. |

| Abstract: |
Epidemiological studies on the condition of existing or the need for new fixed prosthodontic appliances, with the purpose of planning required prosthetic teams, improved materials and methods, are essential in modern prosthodontics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the aesthetic material used in patients with fixed prosthodontic appliances in the Metkovi} region and determine the frequency of crowns and bridges in relation to age, gender, level of education, employment, socio-economic status and frequency of regular visits to the dentist. examination The study included 212 patients, wearing fixed prosthodontic appliances, who were examined in the dental office (clinic) at the Metkovi} Medical Centre during 2001.Descriptive statistics and (2 tests were used during data analysis. The following conclusions were made: 1. The older group of patients had significantly more bridges than crowns (p<0.01). There was no significant difference between gender with regard to the distribution of crowns and bridges (p>0.05), or between patients of different levels of education (p>0.05). Retired patients had significantly more bridges than crowns compared to employed or unemployed patients (p<0.,05). Patients who visit their dentist regularly (once a year or more often) had significantly more crowns than bridges compared to the patients who visit their dentist irregularly or when in pain (p<0.01). This group (irregular visits to their dentist) had more teeth extracted and consequently bridges than the patients who regularly visit their dentist . There was no significant difference between patients with regard to crown and bridge prevalence, depending on the age when they first visited the dentist (p>0.,05). Less educated patients had more fixed prosthodontic appliances older than 10 years than better educated patients (p<0.01). 2. Relatively high frequency of porcelain (64%) was recorded in comparison to acrylic material (36%). There was no difference in gender depending on the material used (p>0.05). Patients older than 60 and less educated patients had more acrylic appliances than younger patients (<39 years) who had mainly only ceramic appliances (p<0.01). |

| Abstract: |
The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the amount of remaining gutta-percha and cement on dentine walls of the root canal after retreatment with three different gutta-percha solvents: eucalyptus oil, halothane and orange oil. Seventy one-rooted teeth were instrumented by “step-back” technique and filled with gutta-percha and Diaket cement using a cold lateral condensation technique. After 180 days storing in saline solution the samples were divided into three groups. Retreatment was done by hand instruments with the addition of solvent. The procedure was considered finished when there were not obvious traces of guttapercha and cement on the instrument or paper point. The teeth were split and photographed by camera mounted on a stereomicroscope. The area of remaining gutta-percha and cement was calculated by computer program “ISSA”. The greatest amount of remaining root canal filling was found after retreatment with orange oil (3.85 ±3.15 mm2), followed by halothane (3.72 ±2.52 mm2), and the best result was achieved with eucalyptus oil (2.82 ±1.31 mm2), but without statistical significance. |

| Abstract: |
New methods of orthodontic treatment and a wider use of fixed orthodontic appliances in Croatia, together with the use of computers for orthodontic diagnosis, has lead to a need for new parameters in the roentgencephalometric analysis „Zagreb 82 MOD“.Craniograms from the Department of Orthodontics School of Dental Medicine in Zagreb served for defining10 new parameters. These parameters were statistically analyzed, and the mean values and standard deviations added to the roentgencephalometric analysis for the Croatian population. The aim of the investigation was also to obtain parameters that change during growth. The results are shown as „norms“ for the new analysis „Zagreb 82 MOD2“.The most significant changes during growth were found in the variable representing the inclination of the upper and lower occlusal plane in relation to the anterior cranial base, which could be explained by the significant increase in posterior facial height in relation to anterior facial height, as well as the overall pattern of growth of the viscerocranium. |

PERIODICALS PUBLISHING |
| Abstract: |
Electronic journals have become an indispensable source of scientific information. Their advantage compared to the printed journals is that they are available to all interested users at the same time, before the printed version, and are not necessarily tied to the location of the library. As one of the fundamental roles of the librarian during the process of dissemination of scientific and professional information is to guarantee users the information they need and when they need it, librarians endeavour to inform users of available electronic sources. The aim of this study was to systematise journals from the field of dental medicine by a review of the journals accessible to the Croatian academic community in databases of articles in full-text in the National and University Library, and the libraries of scientific institutions and faculties, which are incorporated in sub-systems of the System of Scientific Information. Twenty-six journals were selected from the field of dental medicine in aggregated databases of EBSCO Publishing, and the following chosen from the databases of the publisher: 7 titles of Kluwer Academic Publishing, 15 of Elsevier Science, 12 of Springer Verlag and 2 of John Wiley & Sons. |

HYPERSENSITIVITY DENTIN SENSITIVITY |
| Abstract: |
Dentine hypersensitivity is not a new disease. More than a hundred years ago Gysi, 40 years ago Brannström and since then many others have dealt with the problems of its symptoms, pathomechanism, differential diagnosis and therapy. The revived interest today may be attributed to improving oral health and to the presence of more teeth in older age, as well as decreasing caries prevalence. The exposure of dentine surfaces due to gingival recession, erosion and abrasion may cause serious complaints. It occurs in about 40% of the adult population, although, few of them turn to the dentist. Therefore, practising dentists should be aware of the possibilities of treatment, managing strategies and prevention. New aspects include the appropriate timing of toothbrushing after the consumption of acidogenic, erosive foods and beverages, as well as non-invasive (desensitising toothpastes with potassium nitrate/fluoride) and invasive (reconstruction with fillings, coverage of the exposed roots) treatment options. Continuous care of patients with dentine hypersensitivity is advisable in order to prevent more serious consequences (irritation of the pulp). |

TOOTH INJURIES ATHLETIC INJURIES SPORTS MEDICINE |
| Abstract: |
Orofacial injuries are athletic injuries which are specific according to place and way of occurence. Sports dentistry is a dental discipline associated with the prevention and treatment of the consequences of orofacial injuries during sport activities. Orofacial, and particularly dental athletic injuries, differentiate according to way of occurence from other dental injuries and can be easily prevented. By using an adequate mouthguard a number of dental and periodontal injuries can be considerably reduced. There are different intraoral mouthguards: stock, mouth-formed and custom-made mouthguards. Even though with the stock and mouthformed mouthguards a visit to the dentist is avoided, only custom-made mouthguards offer maximum prevention from orofacial injuries. By its construction and technological features it is the most comfortable for athletes during training and competition. Preconditions for wearing mouthguards are good oral prophylaxis and restoration of all teeth (without caries and periodontopathy). The motherguard is commonly fabricated on the upper dental arch. Mouthguards are manufactured from materials that should satisfy numerous physical, mechanical, biological and functional requirement. Fabrication method of a mouthguard by means of vacuum lamination is presented. The role of the mouthguard is to prevent laceration of the tongue, lips and cheeks by the sharp edges of anterior maxillary teeth, to reduce the risk of injuries to the anterior teeth, to reduce the risk of mandibular or maxillary fractures as well as damage to the posterior teeth and temporomandibular joints, after blows to the interior aspect of the mandible. Athletes should be informed of the possibilities of prevention of their oral health as well as of the existence of slight difficulties which are inevitable during wear of a mouthguard. |

TOOTH ABNORMALITIES ROOT CANAL THERAPY |
| Abstract: |
Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly, manifested by the insertion of the enamel and dentin inside crown and root. Aberration is manifested by the broad spectrum of morphological variations from foramen coecum to the smaller or larger root insertion, sometimes to the very apex. The treatment depends on the type of anomaly and whether there is a communication with the pulp and the periapical tissue. The purpose of this study was to show endodontic treatment possibilities for this anomaly. |
