HISTORY OF DENTISTRY FACULTY, DENTAL |
| Abstract: |
The anniversary of the institution in which one works induces those interested in their work to carry out an analysis, a retrospective and to look forward to the future, or in some other way to evaluate the work in which they are engaged. If the institution in which they work is a scientific, teaching and health related institution then the main problem is to avoid leaving out any important detail. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) in veterans of the War for Independence, who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD. The examined group consisted of 100 male subjects with a diagnosis of PTSD, who had participated in the war, and a control group of 94 subjects of the same age and sex who had not participated in the war and in whom psychiatric diagnosis excluded PTSD. The study consisted of case history data and a medical examination. The examination included a questionnaire in which subjects answered questions with yes−no answers. During the medical examination the condition of the jaw joints (sounds, sensitivity and pain during palpation of the jaw joint) and mastication muscles (sensitivity and pain during palpation of the masticatory muscles) was assessed and the functional ability of the stomatognathic system determined (maximal opening, maximal laterotrusion movement left and right and maximal protrusion with registration of eventual occurrence of pain or sound). Statistically significant difference was determined in almost all measured parameters. The subjects with PTSD had subjective symptoms and clinical signs of temporomandibular disfunction (TMD) significantly more frequently. Eighty-two percent (82%) of those with PTSD had at least one symptom and 98% at least one sign of dysfunction, compared with 23.91% and 50% respectively of the subjects in the control group. The most frequent sign in both groups was sound in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which occurred in 64% of subjects with PTSD and 17.3% of subjects in the control group. Statistically significant difference was also found in the limitation of maximal possible movements, i.e. the subjects with PTSD had significantly more often restricted movements in opening, left and right laterality and protrusion. The greatest differences between the groups related to parameters of pain. Namely, 52% of subjects with PTSD had painful TMJ and 91% had at least one painful muscular location. It can be concluded that correlation exists between PTSD and TMJ. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of certain oral hygienic habits (such as general hygiene of the mouth, frequency of toothbrushing, toothbrush hardness) on non-carious lesion development. The study was conducted on 873 subjects, aged 10 yrs or older. Results showed that there is a statistically significant difference regarding oral hygiene between subjects with cervical lesions and those without them. Furthermore, there is no statistically significant difference in non-carious cervical lesion development regarding frequency of toothbrushing and toothbrush hardness. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this investigation was to obtain data on the incidence of clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction in the Rijeka population and to ascertain possible mutual correlation between particular signs and symptoms. The investigation included 408 subjects, 164 men and 242 women aged 18-85 years. After completing a questionnaire a clinical examination was performed of all subjects. The following frequency of particular signs and symptoms were determined:• Bruxism during the night in 17% women and 14% men.• Bruxism during the day in 34% women and 30% men.• Sounds in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) during movementin 26% women and 25% men.• Headaches more often than once in a month in 34% womenand 19% men. Of the patients with bruxism 37% experience headaches more frequently than once in a month, 35% pain in neck muscles and 33% sounds in the TMJ during mandibular movement.Of the patients without bruxism 41% experience headaches, 28% pain in neck muscles and 24% sounds in the TMJ.For statistical analysis χ2 test and odds ratio (OR) were used. Data were analysed by computer programmes Med Calc and Statistics for Windows. Statistically significant difference was found for the frequency of certain signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) in the group of women. No statistically significant difference was found between oral parafunction and signs and symptoms of TMD.It can be concluded that day and night bruxism caused increased pain in the neck muscles and that the increased occurrence of sounds in the TMJ during mandibular movement was more frequent in women, although this was not statistically significant. |

PERIODONTITIS + therapy DENTAL OCCLUSION |
| Abstract: |
Periodontal diseases are caused by microorganisms from dentobacterial plaque. However in each individual different modifiying factors have great influence on the occurence and course of disease, such as some systemic conditions and diseases, as well as local conditions, such as occlusion. Many investigations have been done in order to elucify that connection, but it still remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether occlusal disturbances in periodontal patients exist at all, what their degree of intensity is according to Helkimo’s Occlusal Index, and whether there is difference in the frequency of occurence of these disorders and their degrees in different groups of periodontal patients.Eighty-two examinees were subjected to a clinical examination and divided into two groups with regard to the percentage and degree of clinical attachment loss (CAL) on each tooth. After occlusal analysis each patient was scored according to the criteria of Helkimo’s OI. Chi--square test revealed that there were no statistically significant differences between the frequency and distribution of Helkimo’s occlusal index in each of the examinated groups of patients. |

BONE DENSITY DENTURE, PARTIAL + adverse effects DENTAL ABUTMENTS |
| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the age of the patient and ordinal number of partial dentures (PD) on alveolar bone density around abutment teeth with clasps. The study consisted of 50 subjects of both sexes, with PD. All examined teeth were radiographed twice by standard retroalveolar technique/recording within a period of three months. A copper calibrated peg, 0.1.0.5 mm thick, was stuck onto the X-ray film. Seven regions of interest (ROI) were chosen on each radiograph around the tooth root, 4 pixels in size. The method of intraoral microdensitometry according to Knezović-Zlatarić (1) was used to evaluate changes in alveolar bone density, by which the level of the grey regions of interest was converted into equivalent thickness of the copper pegs. The density of the alveolar bone in the examined ROI was analysed. Difference between the two radiographs was not statistically significant (ANOVA: p > 0.05) regardless of the age of the patient and ordinal number of the PD. However, in all the examined ROI a positive trend was registered of reduction in alveolar bone density at the second recording, without statistical significance. It can be concluded that neither age nor ordinal number of the dentures led to a significant reduction in alveolar bone density around the abutment teeth with clasps. However, because of the positive trend it is possible that during longitudinal monitoring of changes in alveolar bone density statistically significant difference may occur. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of the study was to examine the use of histological methods of qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the deposition of newly created bone after endodontic therapy of chronic apical periodontitis in an experimental dog model. The pulp chambers of two animals (six roots each) were exposed to the effects of oral microflora. Endododontal therapy was performed after 35 days by ProFile® Ni-Ti rotating instruments and Thermafill® obturators, and the cavities filled with amalgam. One animal then received intraperitoneal injection of 100 mg/kg vital stain Procion Red and the other 10 mg/kg doxicyclin perorally for a period of 12 days. After 35 days of endodontic therapy the animals were sacrificed and qualitative and quantitative analysis performed on the histological specimens.Analysis of the newly deposited osteoid was possible by quantitative analysis of the specimens stained with toluidine blue. Analysis of mineralised newly created bone on the native specimens was enabled by analysis of the fluorescent deposits of Procion Red and oxycycline.Quantitative histomorphometric analysis demonstrated greater potential for healing lesions in the animal in which doxycycline was used for demarcation of newly created bone, compromising doxycycline as an independent marker. |

| Abstract: |
The goal of regenerative periodontal therapy is the reconstitution of the lost periodontal structures (i.e. the new formation of root cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone). Results from basic research have pointed to the important role of the enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) in periodontal wound healing. Histological results of experiments in animals and of human case reports have shown that treatment with EMD promotes periodontal regeneration. Moreover, clinical studies have indicated that treatment with EMD positively influences periodontal wound healing in humans. The goal of the current overview is to present, based on the existing evidence, the clinical indications for regenerative therapy with EMD. |

FIBROMA, OSSIFYING |
| Abstract: |
Ossifying fibroma of the head and neck is a rare tumour which most frequently involves the upper and lower jaw. It occurs during the third and fourth decade of life. The lesion is usually solitary and well circumscribed. It grows slowly, thinning the surrounding healthy bone tissue. Radiographic appearance depends on the duration of the disease. In the early stage it presents as a sharply circumscribed zone of translucency with single accumulations of calcification. During the further course, with the sharply circumscribed zone of translucency on the periphery, the centrally located accumulations of calcification become denser. The histological appearance is characterised by fibrous tissue, interwoven with bony trabeculae of lamellar bones, which are bordered with osteoblasts and scattered myxomatous stroma. Therapy is surgical and consists of total resection of the tumour, which is the only way to prevent the occurrence of a local recurrence. In this paper we present a rare case of ossifying fibroma of the orbit which involved the zygomatic bone and spread/extended via the large branch of the sphenoid up to the optic canal. The specificity of the therapy in our female patient was that in spite of contact of the tumour with the frontal base of the skull, a neurosurgical approach was not used. |
