| Abstract: |
The object of the study was to identify dental journals which are “evaluated” by selection of the Institute for Scientific Information, Philadelphia, USA (ISI). They are listed in a special edition of ISI - Science Edition (SE) which is published in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of the aforementioned institute in the USA. Of the available indicators of “evaluation” of journals only Impact Factor (IF) was analysed - impact factor for dental journals from 2001 to 2003 (49 titles in 2001, 48 titles in 2002 and 46 titles in 2003). Reference of dental journals in the most important secondary sources for biomedicine was determined, and all titles are referred to in Current Contents and SCI. The data obtained can be used by scientists (publishing articles in “evaluated” journals) and libraries (building up a fund of scientific periodicals). |

| Abstract: |
Polymerization of composite filling is considered to be an importantfactor in achieving longevity of the restorative treatment. Quality of the polymerization influences physico-mechanical characteristics, color stability, volumetric changes of restoration and biocompatibility of the material itself. Polymerization shrinkage is an unavoidable consequence of setting of the composite material. So far, it has been measured by several different methods. Digital holographic interferometry, a method described in this study, is the only procedure that enables direct monitoring of the polymerization shrinkage for every second of polymerization of the composite material. Values of the polymerization shrinkage obtained by this method correspond with the values obtained by other methods. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of the study was to define the difference of the lip position on lateral cephalograms of subjects with class I and II/1 according to Ricketts and Burstone defining the differences of the variables according to sex. The sample comprised of 57 lateral cephalograms of twelve years old boys and girls. Using measured variables statistic analysis showed following conclusions: Angle class I didn’t show any differences between females and males; class II/1 did show the differences according to sex; analysing boys between class I and II/1 differences in position of upper and lower lip are present; analysing girls between class I and II/1 differences in position of upper and lower lip are not present; comparison between classes without sex separations showes differences in position of upper lip according to both lines. |

DENTAL RESTORATION WEAR CERAMICS POLYMERS |
| Abstract: |
Friction and wear occur due to the contact of surfaces which are more or less rough. During abrasive wear the extrusion of material occurs, caused by hard particles which apply pressure toward the surface or slide along it (three-body abrasive wear) or by hard protrusions (two-body abrasive wear). Because of demands to provide a satisfactory aesthetic mastication surface the clinician is faced with the problem of the choice of material for veneering. The article describes a method for testing abrasive wear of pairs of tooth-prosthetic material for veneering. In order to test the method two different prosthetic veneering materials were tested (polymer material SR Chromasit, Ivoclar and Clay ceramic, Sign-Ivoclar) on a modified Taber abraser, in dry conditions. Significant differences were determined in the wear scars on specimens of the tested materials. The method enables the testing of specimens of different materials mutually or in a pair with a natural tooth, under different loading and with or without a third body (food or artificial saliva), which in clinical practice represents valuable data during the choice of the type of construction and veneering material. |

DENTAL ALLOYS + adverse effects HYPERSENSITIVITY |
| Abstract: |
Type IV reactions, reactions of delayed hypersensitivity, are manifestations of cellular immunity. Such reactions are caused by sensitised T-lymphocytes. In dental medicine contact sensitivity is of particular interest, as restorations are in long-term direct contact with oral tissues and saliva and during function they wear and bend, leading to corrosive processes which result in the release of ions, their accumulation in the tissues and possible sensitivity, i.e. allergic reaction. Dentists need to chose alloys with less tendency to the release of ions, in other words good biotolerance. It is recommended that the use of alloy with a high share of nickel should be avoided. Patch test is indicated for all patients with a history of hypersensitivity to metal or other materials used in the construction of a prosthetic restoration. |

PHOTOGRAPHY, DENTAL + standards |
| Abstract: |
Modern dentistry, as a part of the complete therapy plan, includes the whole of the patient’s face. A photograph provides important visual reference for monitoring growth and developmental changes, providing the patient with a view of the changes and providing the therapist with credible visual material for teaching and research. The first component to consider is the technical aspect of photography. However, documentation of the treatment with pre-treatment and post-treatment photographs can be misleading if the features on one or both photographs are distorted. In this article the authors present the variables for frontal and profile facial photographs that should be understood and controlled if accurate reproduction is desired, such as: lens selection, camera position, subject distance and head position. Consequently numerous frontal and lateral photographs were taken with different head and camera positions in order to show their different contributions to the final picture. Using easily recognised facial landmarks, dental photographers can standardise frontal and lateral portraits for more consistent comparison, and by standardisation they could become valuable additions to clinical charts/records. |

DISABLED PERSONS CHILD ANESTHESIA, GENERAL |
| Abstract: |
Because of the low level of dental care for handicapped children in the Split-Dalmatian district systematic training of staff and procurement of space and equipment was initiated during the 1970s.The majority of the population treated consisted of handicapped children and young people, in relevant institutions or with their families, mainly from this area.A team of specialists, consisting of a pedodontist, oral surgeon, anaesthesiologist and co-workers usually performed dental treatment. When necessary they were joined by other dental specialists. All our patients were treated under general inhalation anaesthesia with the necessary clinical and laboratory tests and written consent of the families or guardians. During a period of twenty years 680 patients were treated. We treated three patients on average in one operative day. Initially the operations were conservative-prosthetic operations, and later this changed to more frequent conservative-restorative procedures. From our experience we consider that the method of endotracheal anaesthesia is particularly suitable for handicapped children and young people. |

| Abstract: |
The paper describes an example of an unusually large, complex odontoma in the mandibular angle of a 23 year-old young man. Because of the possibility of fracture occurring in the mandible during the operation a two-stage surgical procedure was applied, which proved successful and was acceptable for the patient. The authors cite data from the literature, showing other possible surgical procedures in similar cases and discussing their advantages and disadvantages, leaving the reader to decide on the justification of all applied surgical procedures to date. |
