PULPOTOMY FORMOCRESOLS ENDODONTICS TOOTH, DECIDUOUS |
| Abstract: |
Research Objective: To compare outcomes of Diluted Formo Cresol (DFC) pulpotomies versus Ferric Sulphate (FS) pulpotomies performed by paediatric dentists in Private Practice (PP) and those performed by students in Simulated Practice Environment Clinic (SPEC) at the University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada. Clinical and radiographic data were retrospectively collected from charts in PP and SPEC. The same, clinical protocol followed in both settings. Inclusion criteria for consideration of patient’s data were:1. The patient must have remained in the clinic at least 2 years following pulp treatment.2. The patient must have attended his/her recall examinations at 6 or 12 month intervals.3. The patient must have had at least two sequential radiographs.A total of 354 primary molars were studied. At PP, clinical/radiographic success after 3 years was 99% / 97% for DFC and 98% / 96% for FS. At SPEC, clinical /radiographic success was 95% / 78% for DCF and 94% / 77% for FS. No signifi cant difference (p>0.05) was observed in clinical outcomes between DFC and FS treatment groups at both settings (PP / SPEC). However, radiographic success was signifi cantly higher (p<0.05) for both treatment groups at PP than at SPEC.DFC and FS medicaments are equally effective in pulp therapy of primary teeth. Radiographic success of both treatment groups at both settings is less pronounced than clinical success. Even though students performed high quality pulp treatment for primary teeth, they did not match their instructors’ performance. Overall, the results justify the use of non-toxic Ferric Sulphate over Formo Cresol as a primary pulpotomy agent. |

MALOCCLUSION BONE AND BONES ORTHODONTICS |
| Abstract: |
Radiographic assessment of “bone quantity“ is of great value in planning dental treatment and it also has its applications in orthodontics. The aim of this study was to assess the cortical thickness of the lower border of the mandible using linear radiomorphometric indices, and to determine if it is correlated with different age, gender and malocclusion categories in orthodontic pretreatment period of the patients.Seventy seven patients - 30 boys (42.8%) and 47 girls (57.2%), participated in the study. The results of the statistical analysis revealed no signifi cant difference between the right and the left side measurements for mental and antegonial indices (p>0.05). The right gonial index was signifi cantly higher than the left (p<0.05). All linear radiomorphometric indices increased with age. The cortical thickness at the angle of the mandible demonstrated the highest value in Class III malocclusion group (p<0.01). Based on the results of this study, assessment of linear radiomorphometric indices could be clinically valuable for the evaluation of the growth and development of the mandible and for assessing results of orthodontic treatment. |

| Abstract: |
The object of the investigation was to determine the difference in thickness of the soft tissue in subjects with class I and class II/1, by means of horizontal linear variables on laterolateral radiographs, and to determine the differences in the aforementioned variables with regard to sex. Fifty-six laterolateral radiographs of 12-year-old subjects were used for the investigation, out of which 30 with class I (16 boys and 14 girls) and 26 with class II/1 (11 boys and 15 girls). Measurement of the thickness of the soft tissues was performed by means of five horizontal parameters, and the values obtained were statistically analysed by means of Student t-test. Statistical analysis showed that between the sexes in class I the difference existed in landmark A’ and in class II/1 the difference existed in landmark Li. Analysis of boys between classes I and II/1 also showed a difference in landmark A’. Analysis of girls between classes I and II/1 showed a difference in landmark Ls. The total analysis of classes I and II/1, regardless of sex, showed difference in landmarks A’ and Ls. |

AGING AGE DETERMINATION BY TEETH FORENSIC DENTISTRY |
| Abstract: |
Dental age determination in children and adults is an important task in the clinical, forensic and archaeological examinations. The objective of this paper was to compare the reliability of the Demirjian’s and Haavikko’s methods in the determination of chronological age of Croatian children. Dental maturity was studied by the use of 115 panoramic radiographs of Caucasian children of both sexes aged between 4 and 17, from the archives of the School of Dental Medicine and the Dental Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Centre in Zagreb. The median age for both groups was 12 years. Correlation coeffi cient between estimated and real age for the total sample according to Demirjian’s method was 0.96 (p<0,001), while for Haavikko’s method it was 0.97 (p<0,001). According to the monitored methods, the correlation coeffi cients for both sexes were high and statistically signifi cant. Results of this research show the possibility for use of both methods in clinical and forensic cases in Croatia. |

| Abstract: |
The purpose of this study was to evaluate microleakage of two different adhesive systems between resin composite restorations and cavity walls. The experiment was conducted on 12 intact human third molars, extracted for orthodontic reasons, sectioned at the cemento-enamel junction to provide crown segments. The cavities were prepared in the occlusal surfaces. The samples were divided into two groups, six samples in each. Restorations were made with the resin composite “Tetric Ceram” (Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and two different self-etch adhesive systems: in one group two-step self-etch AdheSE (Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), and in the other single-step self-etch Xeno III (DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany). Microleakage was measured by two different methods, fl uid transport model and dye penetration. The results using fl uid transport model showed no statistically signifi cant difference between two groups of samples (p=0,7488). Marginal leakage measured using dye penetration technique method showed statistically signifi cant higher degree of marginal leakage (p=0,002) in the group where Xeno III was used. |

POLYMERS DENTAL MATERIALS DENTURE, PARTIAL |
| Abstract: |
Fractures of polymer material are one of the most frequent reasons for repair of removable dentures. Therefore, there is a continuous strive to strengthen them, and polymer materials of high resistance to fracture are being developed. The aim of this study was to determine the fl exural strength of Ivocap “Plus” High Impact (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) material using the method of “short bar” together with the injectional method of polymerization, as well as comparison of fl exural strength of Meliodent Heat Cure material with the use of classic pressure-heat polymerization, immediately after polymerization and after artificial ageing by storage at 37şC during 28 days and thermocycling. The study showed significantly higher values of fl exural strength (130.1-150.65 MPa) of Ivocap “Plus” compared to Meliodent (109.2-110.3 MPa) in groups of samples tested after polymerization and storage in water. In the group of samples tested after thermocycling there was no significant difference (148.75 compared to 156.25 MPa). Furthermore, there was no significant difference between the samples of same material although the procedure of artifi cial ageing was performed. |

TOOTH BLEACHING PERIODONTICS |
| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel (VivaStyle, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) on periodontal health. Ten participants, 22 to 29 years of age, with clinically healthy periodontal tissues and a wish to change the shade of their teeth, participated in this study. Subjects were treated with 10% carbamide peroxide for one hour daily during 12 days. The volunteers were instructed to keep a diary of possible disturbances during the teeth whitening procedure. At baseline, on 6th and on 12th day API score and PBI score were measured and clinical photograph of teeth in intercuspidation relation was taken. All teeth demonstrated change of at least one shade. There was no change in either plaque accumulation, or gingival inflammation during the teeth whitening procedure. This teeth whitening procedure seems not to have any influence on the periodontal health. |

| Abstract: |
Often wrong judgment of unspecifi c otological symptoms, caused by some types of temporomandibular disorders, is based on the connection in the embryonic development of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the ear. This is a report of a female patient who was previously treated by the ear-nose-throat specialist because of otalgia, but it was concluded that she had some TMJ pathology. Clinical examination and magnet resonance of the TMJs confi rmed anterior slide of the disc. Since the patient has fi ve-year-old complete dentures, new ones were fabricated. The symptoms recede, and for the patient the most important thing was that the pain disappeared. With regards to her age, acquired anodontia and impossible restitutio ad integrum treatment, she was instructed how to support the painless functional status of her masticatory system. |

OSTEITIS INFECTION DENTAL PULP JAW |
| Abstract: |
Condensing osteitis is pathologic growth of the maxillomandibular bones, characterized by mild clinical symptoms. Bone thickening refl ects impaired bone rearrangement in response to the mild infection of dental pulp. This case report describes a patient with extreme bone thickening localized in the left maxilla causing facial asymmetry. Clinical and radiological examination failed to point to defi nitive diagnosis. On differential diagnosis, all bone tissue tumors, cementoma and condensing osteitis with prolonged unsuccessful conservative endodontic treatment of the upper fi rst molar, were considered. A surgical procedure in local anesthesia was preformed in order to remove the pathologically altered bone mass and to extract the tooth that could not have been treated successfully. Histopathologic analysis confi rmed the infl ammatory etiology of the bone lesion. Clinical and radiological follow-up indicated complete healing of the area, with appropriate density and trabeculation of the bone. This case presents as an extreme example of condensing osteitis with major bone lesion, caused by a mild tooth infection. |
