DENTISTRY EUROPEAN UNION |
| Abstract: |
The European Union regulates matters that cannot be covered by individual member states. Several directives regulate the profession of dentistry in order to give each European dentist the possibility to establish a dental practice and to provide services in any member state of the Union with the same rights and obligations as the nationals of that member state. The diplomas, certifi cates and other evidence of formal qualifi cations are mutually recognized in order to facilitate this free movement of dentists within the Union. Also the free movements of goods, e-commerce, advertising and the requirements of dental education at undergraduate or postgraduate level are guaranteed in other directives. The most important articles of each directive that have an infl uence on dentistry are explained further and the reader shall consult the directives if he wants to have a more detailed insight. |

| Abstract: |
This article represents bibliometric analysis of published articles with the address of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, indexed in Web of Science database in the period 1976-2005. The sample consisted of 428 articles that were analyzed according to the authors’ address, productivity markers (authors, institutions, year of publication, article type, language, journal) and citation. The analysis of the structure showed that the University of Zagreb affi liation was mentioned in 87.7% of the addresses, and School of Dental Medicine affi liation in 98.8% of the addresses, in 13 different ways. Most publications (82.5%) are scientifi c articles, 15.2% are congress abstracts, while reviews, short communications, letters, and book reviews and personal articles are present in less that 1%. The articles were published in 88 different journals, mostly in Coll Antropol (39.9%). According to the JCR database, the journals are from 31 different scientifi c areas. Although most of the publications (24) are from the fi eld of Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine, the greatest number of articles is published in two journals from the fi eld of Anthropology. There are 1866 authors of 428 articles, mostly with four authors (23.8%); greatest number of authors being eleven. Mean number of authors per article is 4.4. Collaboration inside the School yielded 45.1% of the articles; slightly more in collaboration with the authors form other Croatian institution (47.4%), and 6.1% in collaboration with foreign authors. The analysis showed that 41.1% of the articles has no citation; the most cited article has 54 citations, mean citation being 2.68 per article. Out of the ten most cited articles, two are published in collaboration with foreign authors, one is a result of collaboration inside the School, and six are result of collaboration with the scientists from the Institute Ruđer Bošković. |

CANDIDIASIS, ORAL STOMATITIS, DENTURE DENTURES DRUG CARRIERS SPLINTS MICONAZOLE |
| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of miconazole gel delivered on a custom thermoformed tray as an overnight drug holder appliance in denture stomatitis treatment, in comparison with classic application as recommended by manufacturer. The investigation included 44 upper denture wearers, diagnosed with denture stomatitis. The experimental group (n = 22) applied 2% miconazole gel in custom tray for overnight wear. The control group (n = 22) applied 2,5 ml of the same drug 4 times a day in their mouth. Intensity of infl ammation and infection was evaluated. The clinical tests that were used were: infl ammation intensity according to Newton, extent of palatal mucosal erythematous surface below denture, digital thermometry, and swabs for Candida albicans cultures. Oldness and hygiene status of dentures were recorded, as well as habit of overnight denture wearing. The investigation revealed that denture stomatitis healed faster and better in the experimental group compared to control group. Greater Candida albicans culture colony count reduction was observed in experimental group, which suggests more effi cient elimination of Candida albicans from the mouth with novel method. This method motivates patients to adhere to treatment and appliance hygiene instructions. Custom splint as occlusive drug delivery showed to be more effective and more convenient for the patients than the same antimicotic drug, classically delivered, which might be clinically relevant in treatment of denture stomatitis. |

| Abstract: |
Objective of work. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) duration and HbA1c level on periodontal status of patients with insulin- dependent DM, as well as the combined effect of smoking and HbA1c level on periodontal status. Subjects were randomly selected from the patients with insulindependent DM that are treated at the Department of Endocrinology in the hospital “Sveti Duh”. Data was gathered by means of an interview, clinical periodontal investigation and patients’ charts from the department. Sites with probing depth of 5 mm and greater were selected as sites with periodontitis. By means of Poisson regression model a relative risk with 95% confi dence interval was computed, corrected for age of the subjects. Relative risk for attachment loss in smokers was 12.805, and for probing depth in smokers 7.99. Relative risk of the HbA1c level > 8.5 in smokers was 10.681 (p = 0.002), and 8.214 (p = 0.006) for HbA1c level ≤ 8.5. Relative risk for attachment loss in nonsmokers was 4.891 (p = 0.031). It was concluded that insulin-dependent smokers with poor glycemic control have the greatest risk for development and progression of periodontal disease. |

AGE DETERMINATION BY TEETH RADIOGRAPHY, DENTAL FORENSIC DENTISTRY REGRESSION ANALYSIS |
| Abstract: |
Age estimation in children is a fundamental question in forensic medicine, paediatric endocrinology and orthodontic treatment. Several methods deal with their age estimation, including methods based on bone and on tooth development. Since several authors have shown that odontological methods can differ in accuracy when different populations are considered, this paper focuses on improvement of the method developed by Cameriere et al., extending it to a larger sample of children belonging to several European regions - 505 Italian, 304 Kossovan and 291 Slovenian children, and investigates the efficiency of the method when various populations are pooled together. Correlation coefficients were evaluated between age and predictive variables. Statistical analysis was performed with the S-PLUS 6 statistical program (S-PLUS 6.1 for Windows, Professional Edition, Release 1). The significance threshold was set at 5%. Statistical analysis indicated that gender, sum of normalized open apices and number of teeth with complete root development have a significant influence on age estimation. Belonging to various European regions did not have a significant influence on model parameters. |

SEX DETERMINATION (ANALYSIS) DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS ARCHAEOLOGY |
| Abstract: |
Many morphologic characteristics and metric methods have been employed for sex determination. If there are only skulls or fragmented jaws available, identification of sex is made on differences in shape and size of the cranial morphological marks. In the present study, an attempt is made to establish standards for sex determination from fragmentary and complete mandibles from two archeological sites in Croatia. On each mandible 18 parameters were measured. Descriptive and multifactorial statistics were performed on the collected data and seven discriminant functions were generated. A discriminant function derived from nine mandibular variables provided 92.06% reliability in sex determination. Length of the mandibular body (males 88.34 ± 4.67 mm; females 81.41 ± 3.04 mm), mandibular angle (males 118.47 ± 6.16°; females 125.63 ± 5.37°) and minimum ramus breadth (males 31.26 ± 2.94 mm; females 28.36 ± 2.15 mm) are detected as variables providing the best separation of the sexes. Results of this study show that mandibles can be used for determining sex, as stated in other similar studies. |

NOISE HEARING LOSS, NOISE-INDUCED PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY DENTIST`S PRACTICE PATTERNS |
| Abstract: |
The aim of this paper was to measure the level of noise in the pedodontic practice, which hasn’t been acoustically treated, and to interview the dentists in order to determine their exposure to undesired noise of dental equipment during daily work. The measurement of noise was conducted at the Department of Pedodontics, School of Dental Medicine, Zagreb, using the most frequently used handpieces (turbine, micromotor with and without water, air syringe and SONICfl ex). A standardised method of noise measurement was applied, by means of a single-channel sound level meter; and a new dual-channel method, by means of an artifi cial head. The equivalent level of background noise with a correction fi lter A (LAeq) was LAeq = 54.4 dB (decibel). The noise level in the left ear of the artifi cial head was 53 dB and in the right ear 55 dB. The noise made by a turbine was LAeq = 81 dB, by the micromotor with water LAeq = 75 dB, by the micromotor without water LAeq = 72.5 dB, by the air syringe LAeq = 81.5 dB and by SONICfl ex LAeq = 76 dB. The level of noise the dentist was exposed to was LAeq = 72.1 dB. It can be concluded that the equivalent level was above LAeq = 70 dB, which is the limit prescribed by the Safety at Work Regulations. Since it is not only the therapist that is exposed to noise, but also the pedodontic patient, it would be advisable to treat the room acoustically in order to reduce undesired consequences of the noise, such as the patient’s fear, stress and anxiety. |

| Abstract: |
The composition of oral cavity fl ora is very complex. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical periodontal parameters and the composition of the subgingival microfl ora in patients with implant-supported restorations. 28 randomly selected patients were included in the study, mean age 46.7; they had no medical record of periodontal diseases and were not periodontally controlled since the placement of the implants. Mean plaque index was 1.04 ± 0.84, probing depth 2.59 ± 1.13 and gingival bleeding index 1.50 ± 0.84. By method of paper-point sampling of subgingival microfl ora, Actinobacillus actinomycet emcomitans, and four other conditionally pathogenic anaerobic bacteria - Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella oralis and Campylobacter rectus in 57% patients were found. These results indicate that the fi ndings of plaque and colonization of potentially pathogenic bacteria in 57% of the patients might cause periimplantitis and might lower the success rate of the biological durability of implant-supported restorations, indicating the need for professional control of the subjects. |

| Abstract: |
This study discusses rehabilitation of masticatory system deformities and temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMD’s) following surgery for malignant tumors of the mandible and radiation therapy of the head and neck region. Successful prosthodontic rehabilitation results and acceptable fi nal maxillomandibular relationships were achieved with the help of myofunctional training therapy, repositioning splints, temporary mouth-guard appliances, and occlusal adjustments or modifi cations of denture design. Prosthodontic treatment of patients with postoperative mandibular defects (following hemi-mandibulectomy) is described, and the role of supporting physiotherapy and myotherapy in regaining functional effi ciency of the masticatory system was emphasised. |

HISTORY OF DENTISTRY MEDICINE IN ART |
| Abstract: |
The aim of this paper was to describe the painting of St. Anthony the Abbot in Glory, St. Blaise and St. Apollonia in historical medical/dental context. The painting belongs to the Benedictine Convent of St. Mary in Zadar, Croatia. St. Apollonia is worshipped as the patron saint of dentists and dentistry, protecting the teeth. St. Blaise is the patron saint of throat, mouth and cervico-facial region and worshipped as the patron saint by the ear, nose and throat specialists and maxillofacial surgeons, while St. Anthony the Abbot protects from the diseases of skin and mucosa, especially those caused by herpes virus. This oil on canvas was painted in baroque style in the early seventeenth century. It is interesting because it shows the three patron saints of the oro-facial region together. Furthermore, this painting witnesses the permanent presence of the cult of worshipping the patron saints of teeth, mouth and throat in Zadar, Croatia, and witnesses the existence of the parallel ways of providing the medical/dental care, both “scientific” and theurgic. This paper adds to the historical/dental heritage of Croatia, and shows that research of the sacral artistic heritage can add to the information about healthcare situation in a particular period. |
