XEROSTOMIA MOUTH DISEASES SALIVARY GLAND DISEASES |
| Abstract: |
Xerostomia can have a significant adverse effect upon oral health and quality of life. A variety of new therapies are continuously being developed and assessed, but in general the treatment of the underlying salivary gland disease remains difficult. It is important, however, that all patients with long-standing xerostomia are appropriately investigated to establish the underlying aetiology, and to receive professional oral health care. |

DENTIN-BONDING AGENTS MUTAGENS + toxicity CHROMOSOME ABERRATIONS |
| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to examine the genotoxic activity of five dentin bonding agents: Adper Single Bond, Adper Single Bond 2, Prompt L-pop, Excite and Opti-Bond Solo Plus. This in vitro study was performed on human lymphocytes from peripheral blood, and the concentrations of dentin bonding agents tested were 0.2, 0.5 i 5 μg/ml, and elution times tested were 1 hour, 24 hours and 5 days. Genotoxicity testing was done using the Structural chromosomal aberration analysis cytogenic method , which determined the complete number of chromosome breaks, chromatide breaks and acentric fragments. The results showed genotoxicity of Opti-Bond Solo Plus in the 0.2 μg/ml concentration after a 24-hour elution period, then OptiBond Solo Plus in the 0.5 μg/ml concentration after a 1 hour elution period and OptiBond Solo Plus, Adper Single Bond 2 and Excite in the 0.5 μg/ml concentration after a 1 day elution period. In the 5 μg/ml concentration after 1 hour of elution, genotoxic potential was observed in cultures with OptiBond Solo Plus, Excite, Adper Single Bond 2 and Adper Single Bond, while all dentin bonding agents showed genotoxicity at that highest concentration but after 1 day of elution. From the results it is obvious that genotoxicity increases with the concentration of the dentin bonding agent, and decreases over time. The highest genotoxicity was observed after a 24-hour-elution period. |

DENTAL LEAKAGE DENTAL PULP DISEASES ROOT CANAL FILLING MATERIALS |
| Abstract: |
Objective of work: To asses the leakage of three different root canal filling techniques: cold lateral condensation, Touch’n Heat and Thermafil technique by fluid transport model. The root canals of 70 single rooted teeth were prepared using step-back technique and obturated with tested techniques and Diaket sealer. The leakage was measured by the movement of an air bubble in a capillary glass tube connected to the experimental root. Thermafil technique showed statistically significantly less leakage (0,46 µL ±0,13) than Touch’n Heat (0,77 µL ±0,50) and cold lateral condensation technique (0,71 µL ±0,19). Under the conditions of this study, specimens obturated with Thermafil techniques showed the least leakage. |

HEALTH STATUS HEALTH SURVEYS DENTIST-PATIENT RELATIONS |
| Abstract: |
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the general health condition i.e. overall health-status of the dental patients population by processing the data obtained from the FDI health-questionnaires which was recommended by the Croatian Dental Chamber. The data which was collected from a total of 2045 individual medical history questionnaires - personally filled in by the patients who attended this Department of Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry during the year of 2005 - was loaded into a computer data-base and statistically analyzed. The analysis showed presence of some kind of a disease in 30.1% of patients; topping the list by incidence were cardiovascular diseases (14.7%). Also, highly represented were various allergic diseases (13.1%). A 1.5% had developed a viral hepatitis, whereas 0.6% of the patients had even had TBC. A comparatively small percentage of patients (0.2%) had admitted to HIV seropositivity resp. exposure to the HIV virus (0.5%). A total of 12% of the group had received a blood-transfusion at some point. Typically, a dental patient above 75 years of age was taking in average 2.16 different types of medicinal drugs. High incidence of systemic diseases in dental patients and an increased consumption of medicinal drugs in the elderly dental patients indicates the need for an enhanced education of the dentist in order to enable his/her proper attitude toward such patients. |

DENTAL CARIES LASERS + therapeutic use |
| Abstract: |
Modern concepts in caries treatment require highly specific and sensitive methods of caries detection opposed to the conventional visual – tactile method. Unnecessary removal of sound dental tissue is quite often due to false – positive caries diagnosis. On the other hand, lesion can be undetected for a long period of time. DIAGNOdent (KaVo, Dental GmbH, Germany), a laser fluorescence – based device, presents an important turnover in diagnostic procedure. DIAGNOdent reading is highly accurate, repeatable, simple, safe, and ensures a long-term lesion monitoring because the result is quantified. The purpose of the study was the comparison of visual - tactile method of caries detection with laser fluorescence. Out of 960 teeth, caries was diagnosed in 90 teeth (9,4%) by DIAGNOdent. Using the visual – tactile method, dental caries was diagnosed in 58 teeth (6%). Absolute disagreement was found in 3,54% cases. More than half of lesions that have remained undetected were in the category of enamel surface caries (DIAGNOdent values 14-20). McNamar’s test showed statistically significant differences between DIAGNOdent based caries detection and visual – tactile method. |

COMPUTERS STUDENTS, DENTAL DISTANCE LEARNING |
| Abstract: |
This research was conducted in order to gain insight into the undergraduate student’s level of computer literacy at the University of Zagreb School of Dental Medicine (UZSDM), and discover the purpose for the use of computers and the internet. The research was conducted on 297 students from all 5 years of the undergraduate program at the UZSMD; 29.3% male and 70.7% female subjects at the average age of 21 years. Each student filled in a questionnaire containing 15 questions, and the results were analysed with the Spearman correlation test and the chi square test. The co-relation between the variable: “recognizing the term “e-learning” and other determined variables was statistically analysed. The results showed that students mostly use computers for up to 2 hrs daily (77%), and the main reason cited for this, in 79.8% of the students was “surfing the net”. The main purpose for using the internet was “searching for information” in 52.8% of the cases and “communication and e-mail reading” in 21%. Of the polled students at UZSDM, 5.2% do not use computers. |

SWEET'S SYNDROME |
| Abstract: |
Sweet’s syndrome or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is an uncommon skin disease of unknown cause and pathogenesis, occasionally associated with malignancy, which is mostly occurring in middle aged women. Clinically, painful plaqueforming inflammatory papules on the skin are accompanied by high persistent fever and arthralgia and the most consistent laboratory findings are peripheral leukocytosis with neutrophilia. We present a well-documented case of a 62 year-old female patient, with idiopathic Sweet’s syndrome, the first reported in Greece with oral lesions, describing its clinical and histological findings and the treatment, and we also review the relative literature focusing on cases with oral involvement. |

CARCINOMA SALIVARY GLANDS ACINAR CELL |
| Abstract: |
Acinic cell carcinoma is a rare, low grade malignant tumor of the salivary glands. Most frequently it originates from major salivary glands almost exclusively in parotid gland and rarely from minor salivary glands. In this report we present a case of 64-year-old man with a persistent swelling within the mucosa of the lower lip at the line of the canine tooth for two years. The lesion was painless, soft in texture, mimicked a mucocel and had the dimensions of 1x1.5 cm with an overlying mucosa normal in color. Surgical excision of the lesion is performed and histopathological confirmation revealed acinic cell carcinoma. |

PAPILLOMA GINGIVA + pathology XANTHOMATOSIS MELANOSIS |
| Abstract: |
Verruciform xanthoma is a relatively uncommon mucocutaneous lesion. Most of the reported cases occur in masticatory oral mucosa, especially the gingiva. This article reports three cases of verruciform xanthoma, all of which were located in the palatal gingiva. The lesions were small and painless. Two were papillary lesions, and the other was cauliflower-like. Histological examinations revealed papillomatosis and acanthosis associated with xanthoma cell aggregation within connective tissue papillae. Xanthoma cells were positive to CD 68 antibody, indicating a macrophage origin. All lesions were treated by conservative surgical excision, and no recurrence was observed. Differential diagnosis and pathogenesis of verruciform xanthoma are discussed. In some cases, its clinical appearance may resemble verrucous carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, clinicians should be acquainted with this lesion to avoid an unnecessary excessive surgical intervention. |
