| Abstract: |
In December 2004 a seaquake and its resulting tidal wave devastated large coastal regions in the Indian Ocean and cost about 250,000 human lives. Material and Methods: In order to identify more than 3,680 victims from 39 nations in the area of Phuket/Thailand under Interpol’s coordinated efforts, more than 20 countries participated in the identification process at the Thai Tsunami Victim Identification – Information Management Center (TTVI-IMC). Standard operating protocols of post mortem (PM) procedures were established. The ante mortem (AM) data of the victims were sent to Thailand and entered into the software program DVI System International (Plass Data Software, Denmark). Results: Registration of post mortem data (PM), such as primary identification characteristics, as well as clothing and physical features (e.g. scars), was performed in a highly standardized manner directly at Phuket/Thailand. Ante mortem data (AM), including information about dental treatment (miniature radiographs, OPTG and treatment chart) were given particular attention. Only recent AM data of good quality permitted rapid and reliable identification of the victims. After one year the dental ID rate of about 55% proved the significance of the method. Of the 3680 officially registered victims who had died, 3272 could be identified. This equals an identification rate of 87.77%, of whom 44% were identified by their dental status. Conclusion: Ninety-two per cent of the approximately 2,050 non-Thai victims, and 53% of the 1600 Thai victims, were identified. Thus, the overall ID rate per 22.11.2006 was 70%. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to acquire a three-dimensional qualitative and quantitative nano-scale data of surface topology of electropolished CoCr dental alloy, actually of the two different solid solutions previously described as dendrites and interdendritic regions. Material and Methods: Ten CoCr alloy samples (Wironit® extra-hard, Bego, Germany) were prepared, cast and electropolished. The surface of the samples was recorded and analysed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), as well as with optical microscope. The AFM imaging and analysis made it possible to observe a surface of the CoCr dental alloy three-dimensionally. It has been understood that the dendritic surface structure of the CoCr alloy consists of clusters of nanocrystallites forming islands (corresponding the dark interdendritic regions on optical micrographs), which emerge from a smooth undulating surface (corresponding the light dendritic regions on optical micrographs). Results: The 95% confidence interval (p<0.05) for the maximum z-value was from 819,98 to 1020,99 nm, for RMS values from 66,93 to 108,54 nm and for Ra (mean roughness) values from 51,53 to 82,48 nm. Conclusion: The surface revealed favourable characteristics regardingroughness, moreover the surface of the alloy can be considered really “smooth”, without any mechanical retentive features for microorganisms’ trapping. |

Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of different prophylactic pastes on DIAGNOdent/DIAGNOdent pen (DD/DD pen) readings and the influence of different times and cleaning methods of the prophylactic pastes residues on DD/DD pen reading values. Also, it had to be established if there were differences in readings between DD and DD pen device.Material and Methods: On 35 healthy permanent third molars reference values were measured with DD/DD pen devices and only teeth whose values did not exceed the value of 5 were selected. The research included seven different prophylactic pastes (DentsplyNupro Medium, Voco Klint, Vivadent Proxyt RDA 7, Vivadent Proxyt RDA 83, Vivadent Proxyt RDA 36, Dentsply Zircate Prophy, Septodont Detartrine) and their influence on DD/DD pen reference values. Also, four different cleaning methods of paste from the fissures were examined: water for 5s, water for 10s, water+air for 5s and water+air for 10s.Results: The paste Dentsply Nupro shows statistically significant increase of values for 4.34 to 8.94 for DD device, and for 5.48 to 9.71 for DD pen device (p<0,05), other pastes did not show any significant increase of values. Conclusion: The statistical difference in cleaning methods of prophylactic paste residues from the fissures was not proven. After usage of any of the cleaning methods, small amounts of paste stay in fissure and influence the DD/DD pen values. There are statistically significant differences between reference values and cleaning method with water for 5s for the DD and DD pen devices (p=0,034). When reading the other values, no statistically significant differences were shown between DD and DD pen devices (p>0,05). |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this in vitro study was to assess antimicrobial activity of calcium hydroxide (Calasept) and chlorhexidine (CHX) in various concentrations with respect to Enterococcus faecalis in human root dentine up to 100 μm. Material and Methods: Forty-eight human root canals were enlarged to standard size (ISO 40) and inoculated with Enterococcus faecalis for 21 days. After inoculation the canals were medicated with one of the following: 2 %, 1 % and 0.2 % chlorhexidin gel, Chlorhexidine releasing gutta-percha points (active point), calcium hydroxide and aqua distillate (aqua dest.). Aqua dest. served as control medium. At the end of a disinfection period of one week dentine samples were collected with reamer and H-file (ISO 45 and 50) and put onto Columbia agar plates. Results: Bacterial growth was assessed by counting the colony forming units (CFU) after 24 hours and 48 hours of incubation. CHX gels could penetrate dentine up to 100 μm. Two % CHX gel is slightly stronger than 1 % CHX gel (p-value 0.0925) only in the peripheral dentine sample after 48 hours of incubation, and 0.2 % CHX gel had less effects on E. faecalis than 2 % CHX (p-value 0.0191). In the central dentine sample no difference between the CHX gels could be observed. In general, CHX gels were more effective than the other medicaments tested. No significant difference between Ca(OH)2 and Aqua dest. could be observed. Conclusion: For effective elimination of E. faecalis, especially in deeper dentine-layers, CHX concentrations of at least 1 % are necessary. An intracanal, interappointment dressing of 2 % CHX may have the potential to eliminate E. faecalis in vivo. |

DMF INDEX DENTAL CARIES ORAL HEALTH |
| Abstract: |
Tooth decay is one of the most widespread diseases in the world today. It affects all populations and age groups. It’s a disease that is very difficult to eradicate due to a complex interaction of social, cultural and biological factors, as well as nutritional habits, all of which influence the incidence of tooth decay. The purpose of this research was to determine the incidence of caries in Central Dalmatia, and from a variety of living environments: urban (the city of Šibenik), rural (Drniš highlands), and island (Murter Island); this was done for five different age groups. Material and Methods: The research covered 450 subjects from the following five different age groups: 6-year-olds, 12-years-olds, 15-year-olds, adults (35-44 years old), and elderly patients (65-74 years old). Each focus group consisted of 15 male and 15 female subjects. Altogether there were 150 examined subjects per geographical region, and the sum total of subjects was 450. The data compiled through clinical examination was entered into modified WHO forms. Results: The total DMFT index attained with this research was 9.53 for permanent teeth, with statistically significant difference between sexes. The average DMFT for deciduous teeth among sixyear-olds and twelve-year-olds was 2.0, without a statistically significant difference between genders. |

PAIN DEPRESSION SOMATOFORM DISORDERS TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDERS |
| Abstract: |
Objective: To examine the relationship between psychological status and pain in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in Izmir, Turkey.Material and methods: One hundred and twenty-three TMD patients (102 women (mean age 31.31±12.58), 21 men (mean age 39.52±15.3)) referred to Ege University, School of Dentistry, Department of Prosthodontics. A history of pain was asked to all patients. Patients were diagnosed based on clinical examination and the complaint of pain was recorded. Psychological status was assessed with the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R). Data were analyzed statistically. (Student t-test, One-way ANOVA and Chi-Square, α=0.05) Results: In a total of 70 patients (14 males (20%), and 56 females (80%), muscle disorders were involved (56.9%). Twenty-two females (17.9%) were diagnosed having disc displacement. Eighty-five patients (69.1%) referred with the complaint of pain which was significantly correlated to somatization (p=0.020). The depression values from subscales of SCL-90-R of the disc displacement diagnosed patients were significantly high (p=0.023). The majority of the patients referred with TMD in Turkish population were women, as seen in other populations. The psychological evaluation results revealed high somatization (p=0.039). Conclusion: Patients with disc displacement exhibited high depression levels. For data on greater populations, a multicenter study model is required. |

| Abstract: |
This paper is an overview on different interpretation of tooth wear, clinical appearance and etiopathogenic models. A process of tooth wear on the ultrastructural level of dental surfaces may be explained by tribological mechanisms, clinically classified as: attrition, abrasion, erosion and abfraction. There are some difficulties in clinical differentiation of certain processes of hard dental tissue wear due to multifactorial etiology and synergistic effects of different mechanisms of tooth wear together with synchronized action over a longer period of time. In order to predict further actions with regard to both existing and planned procedures used during the period of oral rehabilitation, it is important to detect the mechanism which caused the loss of dental tissue, which should ensure clinical success. |

MOUTH NEOPLASMS LYMPHOMA, NON-HODGKIN |
| Abstract: |
Malignant lymphoma of the oral region are uncommon and account for approximately 3.5% of all oral malignancies. In this report, a case of primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the left mandible is presented. The spontaneous and intermittent pain of the left mandible had continued after third left molar extraction. Intraoral examination revealed healing retardation of the postextraction socket. A panoramic radiograph revealed a radiolucency in the posterior mandibular region with irregular margins. After the 10-day course of antibiotics the spontaneous pain diminished, but the inadequacy of the healing at the extraction site was still present. We initially misdiagnosed it as chronic osteomyelitis. Based on the histological and immunohistochemical examination, we made the diagnosis of diffused large cell lymphoma of the B-cell type. After the combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy patient showed complete remission with the disappearance of all clinical evidence of disease. The diagnosis of extranodal lymphoma of the jaw may be chalenging, because frequently there is a low index of clinical suspicion and malignant tumor may mimic common oral and dental pathological conditions. Dentists can play the important rule in the early detection of the malignant lymphoma of the oral cavity. |

| Abstract: |
The diagnosis of metastatic lesion to the jaws is difficult, challenging and is based mainly on histopathology. Distant metastasis of basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) to the mandible from salivary gland tumor is considered rare. A case of mandibular metastasis from parotid BCAC is reported. The use of cytogenetics in the diagnostic work-up is described. Cytogenetic analysis may be used as an additional tool for diagnosis of metastases and is recommended when a metastatic jaw lesion is suspected. |

MANDIBLE HEMANGIOMA VASCULAR DISEASES |
| Abstract: |
The authors present a case of central hemangioma of the mandible which was diagnosed radiographically and histopathologically. The surgical procedure was complicated by subsequent bleeding which was stopped by an additional surgical procedure. As central hemangioma of the jaws is a relatively rare findings, which can be observed from the relevant literature, and possible complications can be extremely dramatic, the aim of the presentation is to emphasise the clinical, radiographic and histopathological characteristics of this formation. Comparison with another case, which radiographically resembled a polycystic tumour of the jaw and which bled profusely during the operation, causing the postponement of the operation and indicating the need for additional angiographic and radiotherapy, demonstrated that there are no characteristic clinical and radiographic appearances which can indicate the possibility of such changes. The diversity of the radiographic appearances presented in the world literature shows that apart from other pathological changes any transparency in the jaws may also be a central hemangioma. The presented cases confirm this judgement. |
