| Abstract: |
Objective: to describe the age of mandibular third molar (M3) crypt formation and investigate if root formation of the mandibular second molar (M2) can predict M3 agenesis. Materials and Methods. Mandibular M2 and M3 were categorised into developmental stages of Moorrees et al. (1963). The range and mean age of M3 crypt stage was calculated. Radiographs with M3 at crypt stage (N=150) were selected and the range of M2 formation stage described. The number and probability of M3 developing given M2 stage was calculated using 1749 radiographs. The odds ratio of M3 developing if M2 > R1/2 was calculated using logistic regression. Results. The average age of M3 crypt stage was 8.84 years [range 5.47 to 12.55]. No significant sex or ethnic differences were observed. When M3 was at crypt stage, the range of M2 stages was from crown half up to root three quarters, the most common being from crown complete to root one quarter. By the time M2 was R1/2, 99% of individuals had a visible M3 crypt. Odds ratio of M3 absence at M2 R3/4 or later stage was 0.03 [95% c.i. 0.02, 0.05]. Conclusion. The average age of M3 crypt was during the eighth year and most commonly occured when the adjacent M2 was at crown complete or early root stage. As the root of M2 developed, the likelihood of M3 crypt formation decreased. After M2 stage R1/2, the development of the M3 crypt was unlikely. |

SJOGREN'S SYNDROME SISTER CHROMATID EXCHANGE LYMPHOMA |
| Abstract: |
Purpose: To investigate genomic instability by using Sister Chromatid Exchange (SCE) in the peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with Sjögren’s syndrome (SS). Patients and Methods: The frequency of SCE (per metaphase) was investigated in patients with primary Sjögren’s Syndrome (n=30), in untreated lymphoma patients (n=15) and healthy individuals (n=15) who constitute the control groups. Results: We found the mean frequencies of SCE in the patients with SS, untreated lymphoma and healthy controls as 7.77±1.50, 8.80±0.75, 6.65±1.50, respectively. We found statistically significant differences between patients with SS and lymphoma (p=0.007) and also between patients with lymphoma and healthy controls (p=0.0001). No significant difference was observed between patients with SS and healthy controls in regard of mean frequencies of SCE (per metaphase). Conclusion: It is well known that up to 5.0% of all SS patients may develop lymphoma. High frequency of SCE is regarded as a cytogenetic biomarker of early mutagenic effect suggesting increased risk of cancer. We observed that the mean frequencies of sister chromatid exchanges (per metaphase) of three patients with SS were higher than those of untreated lymphoma patients. This result can only be verified by prolonged follow-up of these patients. We suggest that results should be interpreted by evaluating other parameters which play important roles in malignant transformation. |

GLASS IONOMER CEMENTS DENTAL MATERIALS DENTIN |
| Abstract: |
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the water movement across dentin bonded to conventional glass-ionomer cements. Material and method: Class V cavities were prepared on extracted permanent third molar teeth, filled with conventional glass-ionomer cement Fuji IX and stored in artificial saliva for one and 18 months. After the storage time interval, the teeth were sectioned longitudinally and examined by SEM (in secondary and backscattered electron mode) and EDAX. Results: Spherical structures were noted in the material adjacent to the interface with the hard dental substances after 18 months. The air voids found next to the interface between the traditional glass-ionomer cements and dentin are mainly “egg-shell-like” (although, solid ones were also found). They are probably a result of the continuation of the setting reaction in the air voids of the original polyalkenoate matrix, which appears because of water diffusion from the humid dentin. The EDAX analysis proved that these formations consist of high quantity of strontium, silica and aluminium. Conclusions: The described spherical formations may lead to improvement of the compressive strength, which is found in old restorations with conventional glass-ionomer cements. |

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS ORAL HYGIENE INDEX DENTAL PLAQUE INDEX |
| Abstract: |
Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the oral hygiene in patients with multiple sclerosis. Material and Methods: 86 patients with multiple sclerosis and 54 healthy persons were examined. The state of oral hygiene was evaluated with the use of OHI-S index according to Green and Vermillion limited only to dental plaque. The obtained data were statistically analyzed using Chi-square test. Results: Obtained results showed that 44,2 % of patients with multiple sclerosis and 54,2% of healthy persons had good oral hygiene (code 0). The mean value of OHI-S index was 1,29 in MS group and 1,08 in the control group. Conclusion: Higher values of OHI-S index among multiple sclerosis cases than in control group indicates poorer oral hygiene status in patients with a systemic disease. |

DIAGNOSIS, ORAL + methods PHYSISCAL EXAMINATION THYROID NEOPLASMS DENTAL CLINICS |
| Abstract: |
A thorough/systematic medical history taking and extra-/intraoral examination is essential in the primary evaluation and in the management of the patients with any neck and facial pathology in the dental clinics. This approach is crucial in the initial evaluation and the management of the patients with several clinical conditions which may be frequently diagnosed primarily by the dentist in the neck and prevent unnecessary therapeutic interventions in the dental clinics. In this case report, an 85 years old female, who was primarily diagnosed with anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid gland after initial evaluation for pain in the middle mandibular region in our dental clinic, was presented. Medical history was not specific except hypertension. In thorough intraoral examination no pathology was observed to explain the pain. Maxillary jaw was edentulous. In extra oral examination cervical asymmetry due to an unrecognized mass in the left thyroidal lobe with the enlargement of the left inferior cervical lymph nodes was noted. No dental therapeutic intervention was planned in the dental clinic. After diagnostic workup the patient was treated with total thyroidectomy without cervical dissection. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma was confirmed with histopathological examination. This case was interesting to recall the importance of the thorough/systemic medical history taking and extra-/intraoral examination in the initial evaluation of the patients in the dental clinic, which should not be ignored to prevent unnecessary interventions in the dental clinics. |

AGE DETERMINATION BY TEETH ADOLESCENT EMIGRANTS AND IMIGRANTS |
| Abstract: |
The age of a living person which is defined as the time elapsed since the date of birth may sometimes be queried for various reasons. In Norway, this may happen with children adopted from abroad and refugees who arrived without identification papers. It is the civil rights of a person in a modern society to have a correct date of birth. Unaccompanied asylum seekers under the age of 18 years have the right to be treated as children or minors. He cannot so easily be denied access nor returned and the likelihood of a permanent permission to stay increases. It is therefore tempting for young asylum seekers to pretend to be younger than they really are. In the latter years several young asylum seekers have arrived in Norway claiming to be younger than 18 years of age, but cannot produce official papers to verify this. In the year 2002 approximately 900 people claiming to be minors arrived in Norway and the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) wanted to have the age verified from biological markers as were already done in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Contact was established with the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Oslo and a project for estimation the age based on teeth started. At the same time initiation was made to take radiographs of the hand and wrist bones and have age assessments from these performed at one of the university hospitals in Oslo. Independent reports were submitted to UDI from both institutions. The aim of this paper is to show the technique we use at the Faculty of Dentistry in Oslo including some examples. |
