| Abstract: |
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dentine wear after brushing with powered toothbrushes with different brush head size and different load applied in comparison with manual toothbrush. Material and Methods: Powered toothbrush Sonicare Elite with mini and standard size brush heads at 90g and 150g vertical load, and the manual toothbrush Oral-B-P35 with a vertical load of 150g, were used as a control group. Toothbrushing machine with different number of strokes was used for dentine abrasion assessment. For Sonicare-Elite with standard size head 12000 strokes was used, for Sonicare Elite with mini head 18000 and for manual toothbrush 12500 strokes. 3D-Laser scan was used for evaluation of dentine wear. The highest dentine wear was recorded using manual toothbrush (107.26μm), while the lowest using Sonicare-Elite with standard size head at 90g vertical load (47.7μm). Results: No statistical significance was found between powered toothbrushes with: mini head (90g load), standard head (90 and 150g load) and between mini head of powered toothbrushes at 150g vertical load and manual toothbrush. Conclusion: Powered toothbrushes with different brush head size and different load applied caused different tooth wear: the smaller the brush head and the higher the load is, the higher the dentine wear is. |

ORAL HEALTH DENTAL HEALTH SURVEYS STUDENTS |
| Abstract: |
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the self-reported oral health behaviours of Turkish non-dental school students. Methods: A sample of 300 students (mean age 19.0±1.36) – 233 females (mean age 18.7±0.99), and 67 males (mean age 19.9±1.88) – attending Ege University, Izmir, were randomly selected from the whole student population. Data on self-reported oral health behaviour of students were collected by a self-administered questionnaire. Results: It was observed that all the students performed oral care, 92.3% used toothbrush and toothpaste for care, and the frequency of brushing the teeth twice or more a day was 43.3%. It was determined that 34 students (11.3%) had never been to the dentist, it had been more than 1 year for 50% that they had seen a dentist, and the main reason for seeing the dentist was toothache for 29%. Female students brushed their teeth more frequently than male students (p<0.05). Compared with male students, females tended to have gingival bleeding (p<0.01), felt more pain in the wisdom tooth area (p<0.05), and they perceived more sounds in opening-closing of the mouth (p<0.05). Conclusion: Systematic oral health education programmes should be implemented in respect to all educational levels and ages, especially for the peoplewho will work in the field of health, to support the improvement of regular oral selfcare practices. |

| Abstract: |
Purpose: Little is known on levels of inflammatory mediators in saliva in periodontitis-affected individuals. Material and Methods: In order to establish the pattern of their concentrations in different stages of periodontal healing process, we have measured the levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactoferrin (LF), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin-1 (IL-1), and GRO-α in patients with previous periodontal disease. Whole saliva samples were collected immediately following, as well as eight weeks after periodontal treatment in a group of 16 subjects with clinical signs and symptoms of periodontitis. Results: Statistical analysis revealed significant differences of clinical periodontal parameters and in levels of mediators between two measurements. Concentrations of CRP, LF, GRO, MPO, IL-1 and ALP decreased with periodontal healing, while the concentration of β2-MG was increased. Conclusion: It may be concluded that cytokine concentrations are possible risk indicators for active periodontal disease. |

| Abstract: |
Objective: The aim of the study was an assessment of the calcium and potassium saliva concentration in patients with multiple sclerosis. Material and Methods: 86 patients with multiple sclerosis and 54 healthy persons were examined. Saliva levels of calcium and potassium were estimated with the use of the colorimetric method. The obtained data were statistically analyzed using t-Student and Chi-square tests. Results: Calcium levels in the saliva of MS patients were statistically lower than in healthy persons. Potassium saliva concentrations of MS patients were statistically higher than in the control group. Conclusion: The observed electrolytes disorders can be associated with the neurological and immunological disturbances which are characteristic for multiple sclerosis. |

DENTAL CARIES CARIES DETECTOR BIOLOGICAL MARKERS |
| Abstract: |
Purpose: Dental caries is an infectious process, caused by bacteria, with an increasing incidence in developing countries. The significant factors in caries could be the elements of salivary defense system, i.e. organic and inorganic compounds present in saliva. The last years there has been a growing interest in the role of nitrates and nitrites in protection against oral diseases. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between NO concentration in unstimulated and stimulated saliva of children with low and high caries risk. Material and Methods: The study group consisted of 123 children with permanent dentition (the mean age 13.4±0.3). According to DFMT index, the subjects were divided into low (51 subjects) and high caries risk group (72 subjects). Two saliva samples were taken from each subject – unstimulated and stimulated one. Nitric oxide concentration was measured as total nitrates and nitrites by the Griess reaction method. Results: The results of this study show that the presence of NO and its metabolites in saliva of children with natural healthy teeth is significantly higher compared to high risk group, suggesting the protective role of NO in relation to caries. Conclusions: The highly significant increase of nitrates and nitrites in stimulated saliva of high caries risk group could be the host defense response opposing bacterial growth, due to induction of iNOS in salivary glands. The obtained results support the role of NO as modulator of bacterial proliferation and suggest that increased NO production might contribute to lower caries incidence in children. |

| Abstract: |
Osseointegration is a structural and functional connection between the bone surface and the dental implant surface. The stability of dental implants is accomplished by direct contact between the bone tissue and the titanium-oxides on implant surface. Recently, a clinical instrument has been developed to analyze the resonance frequency by using a new unit called the implant stability quotient (ISQ). Purpose: The aim of this study was to establish whether the ISQ level depends on the age and gender, implant diameter and length and implant position, that is, could successful osseointegration be predicted by these parameters. Material and Methods: This study included 30 patients, 17 females and 13 males aged between 23 and 71. The total number of implants was 53. The Straumann implants system, type Standard Plus with a sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) surface was used. Results: Six weeks after the surgery, the patients had a follow-up exam and the ISQ levels were measured by Osstell. Univariate analysis of variance has shown significant difference of ISQ value regarding gender as well as between ISQ and implant width. No statistically significant correlation was shown in relation of ISQ and different age groups, implant length and implant placement These are preliminary results that need to be confirmed in some future studies that will include more patients. |

| Abstract: |
A central giant cell granuloma of the maxilla is presented, which was diagnosed in a three-year-old girl and surgically treated, and which recurred on two occasions in the following eight years to a size which destroyed a large part of the maxilla, resorbed the roots of the anterior teeth and threatened that it could lead to the need for a more extensive mutilating operation. In this phase the case was treated by a conservative surgical method and further monitored for six years until the complete healing of the central granuloma. The presented final condition prompted the authors to question whether a radical surgical operation is necessary in the case of recurrences of central giant cell granuloma of the jaws. |

| Abstract: |
Gardner syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the triad of familiar polyposis , multiple osteomas and tumors of soft tissues. Malignant transformation of colonic polips to colon cancer occurs in all cases, the disease is distinctive with poor qualıty of life. The 27-year old male was referred to our department from a nearby medical centre for extraction of lower left mandibular second molar tooth. The panoramic radiographs disclosed a tooth crown destroyed with caries lesion, impacted lower canine teeth located in the inferior border of mandible and multiple jaw osteomas. From the patient’s history we found out that the patient was suffering from Gardner’s syndrome and had undergone different surgical procedures. The aim of this case report is to describe oral and maxillofacial symptoms of Gardner syndrome and its potential dental implications. |
