| Abstract: |
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of Bisphosphonate-associated-osteonecrosis-of-the-jaws (BP-ONJ) and protective factors of BP-ONJ-development in breast cancer patients with osseous metastasis and bisphosphonate therapy using systematical dental oral examinations. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional-study was conducted in the Department for Gynecology in Mainz, Germany. All breast cancer patients (n=51) treated with bisphosphonate in the time span from 07/2006 to 09/2007 were recruited. Primary outcome was the development of BP-ONJ and the detection of possible additional trigger factors for the development of BP-ONJ, as well as possible factors for avoiding BP-ONJ. Results: Only 1 out of 51 patients developed BP-ONJ (2.0%). A tooth extraction could be identified as an additional trigger factor. The overall dental hygiene of this patient clientele was above average. Conclusion: Compared to other alignant diseases, BP-ONJ in breast cancer patients does not appear as often. The underlying disease might be of importance in the development of BP-ONJ. A good dental hygiene might be a protective factor. |

DENTURE, COMPLETE QUALITY OF LIFE ORAL HEALTH |
| Abstract: |
In addition to already existing monitoring of clinical indicators of oral diseases a need was recognized for a standardized measure of patients’ assessment of their own health in Croatia. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the OHRQoL before and after prosthodontic complete denture therapy and to examine possible differences between male and female gender. The aim was also to assess the OHRQoL of general population in Croatia and to compare the OHIP scores with the group of complete denture (CD) prosthodontic patients. Material and Methods: The study included 130 individuals from general population in Croatia and 70 patients involved in CD therapy. Participants filled in the Croatian version of the OHIP questionnaire (OHIP-CRO49). Results: In the general population there were no statistically significant differences considering the OHRQoL between male and female gender (p>0.05). In the group of prosthodontic patients the OHRQoL was significantly lower in females before the beginning of CD therapy than in men (p<0.05) and remained lower even six months after the therapy had been finished, which was proved by higher OHIP summary score and the scores of the following OHIP subscales: Psychological discomfort, Social disability and Handicap. Before CD therapy had begun the OHRQoL was significantly lower in patients with a need for CD therapy in relation to general population (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although the OHRQoL was significantly improved by the insertion of new CDs in all prosthodontic patients (p<0.05), in comparison with general population it remained significantly lower even after the CD treatment had been finished for the following OHIP subscales: sychological discomfort, Physical disability and Social disability (p>0.05). |

| Abstract: |
Aim: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an important protein of the innate immune system. It is able to bind to sugar groups encountered on the surfaces of a wide range of microorganisms and interacts with serine proteases (MASPs) to effect the activation of complement. Mutations of the expressed human MBL2 gene have been associated with several infections; this preliminary study thus sets out to assess the association between the polymorphism in exon-1 of the MBL2 gene and periodontal disease in type 2 diabetic patients. Material and Methods: The sample comprised 50 diabetic patients, who were submitted to a clinical periodontal examination that evaluated in six sites per tooth probing depth, bleeding on probing, clinical recession, dental plaque and the number of teeth present. Periodontal disease was defined as 4+ sites of loss of attachment of 5+ mm, with one or more of those sites having a pocket of 4+ mm (Beck’s criteria). The collection of scaling cells from the oral mucosa was carried out and the detection of polymorphism was made by the technique of real time PCR (RT-PCR) using the melting temperature curve analysis. Results: The data revealed that no statistically significant differences in the genotype (p=0.564) or the allele (p=0.643) frequencies were observed among the healthy individuals or those with periodontitis. Conclusions: The polymorphism in exon-1 of the MBL2 gene was not related to the periodontal disease in the sample evaluated. |

| Abstract: |
Use of root resorption-inhibiting substances may be an alternative in cases of unsuccessful reimplantation of the teeth. Objective: The aim of this study was to test a solution of Alendronate (ALN), as an intracanal therapeutic agent for late replanted teeth. Material and methods: Mandibular premolar mature roots of four dogs were used in the study. The roots were endodontically treated, then extracted and bench dried for 45 minutes. Thereafter, the teeth were divided into two groups: Group I: intracanal dressing with solution of 1mMol ALN and topical application of ALN 1mMol, Group II: topical application of ALN 1mMol. Teeth were then replanted in their respective sockets. The animals were sacrificed four months after replantation and the samples processed for morphometric and microscopic analysis. The residual root mass was measured to determine the extent of root structure loss. Results: Statistical analysis performed with the Scheffe F multiple comparison test revealed significant differences among treatment groups (p<0.005). Conclusion: The results indicate that alendronate was able to reduce root resoprtion when applied as intracanal solution and topical solution more efficiently than when applied solely as topical solution. |

| Abstract: |
Undergraduate dental education changes students’s perception of oral health, as well as oral hygiene habits and attitudes. Aim of this study was to compare oral hygiene and oral health habits and attitudes between 4th year students of dental medicine and 4th year students of other faculties of University of Zagreb in order to determine the possible extent and significance of differences. Material and Methods: Total number of subjects was 151 which included 79 dental students (4th year) and 72 students of other faculties (4th year) of University of Zagreb, of both genders. Modified oral hygiene habits and attitudes questionnaire according to Špalj consisting of 21 questions was used. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS ver. 16.0 software. Results showed difference between two groups, where dental students had better oral hygiene habits and better oral health attitudes compared to their colleagues from other faculties. Dental students were better instructed in brushing techniques, brush more often, use additional means of oral hygiene, have lesser prevalence of gingival bleeding and visit dentist more often then their colleagues from other faculties. Conclusion: Because of greater awareness of oral health problems and improved knowledge on preventive measures, students of dental medicine could positively contribute to the oral health of their patients and their colleagues by education, but also by their own example as a role – model. |

| Abstract: |
A newborn infant with congenital epulis can be the most difficult sight for both parents as well as health care professionals involved in neonatal care. These lesions of the infant can be of varying sizes, posing a risk of airway obstruction or interfering with feeding. Dentists should have the knowledge about these lesions as they may necessitate consultation with other practitioners such as pediatricians, anesthetist, and neonatologist and provide information to parents regarding the treatment of these lesions. Furthermore, congenital epulis is an important lesion in the differential diagnosis of more aggressive lesions seen in early life. English literature review showed only three cases of congenital fibrous epulis. In this present report, a four month old male infant is described with an unusual swelling over mandibular anterior alveolar region since birth and histologically the lesion showed features of congenital fibrous epulis. |
