| Abstract: |
Objectives: This paper reports the preliminary results of the measurements of laser induced fluorescence in several porphyrin solutions. Coproporphyrin and uroporphyrin are common constituents
of carious lesions. Their property to exhibit fluorescence when irradiated with a light of certain wavelength could be used as a means to detect carious lesions. Materials and methods: Absorption coefficient measurements of coproporphyrin I dihydrochloride and uroporphyrin I dihydrochloride solutions were performed under different pH conditions in order to identify spectral regions for effective laser excitation. Lasers with discrete wavelengths at 420 nm, 473 nm and 532 nm were used for the induction of the fluorescence. Results: At all laser wavelengths interesting fluorescence bands peaking at 591 nm, 619 nm and 652 nm for coproporphyrin and at 617 nm and 680 nm for uroporphyrin were observed. Conclusions: When combined together all bands should correspond to the spectral band structures found in real carious lesions. |

| Abstract: |
Aim: The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the micro-tensile bond strength to dentin of two all-in-one adhesives and an etch-and-rinse adhesive. Material and Methods: The teeth were randomly divided into three groups for treatment with one of the following adhesives: Adhese One®, Futurabond M® and Adper Singlebond® (control). Roots and the apical floor of pulp chambers were removed with a microtome. The build-ups were vertically sectioned into rectangular (≈1mmx 1mm) compound bars with microtome. The bars were submitted to tensile tests at constant crosshead speed (1mm/min) using a universal testing machine and tested for each adhesive. Fifteen specimens were manufactured and tested for each material for permanent dentin. Fractured surfaces were inspected to determine the mode of fracture. Results: The bond
strengths of Adhese One (5,83±3,13 MPa) was significantly lower than Futurabond M (15,76±4,2 MPa) (p:0,0001) and Adper Singlebond (21,14±5,04 MPa) (p:0,0001) while dentin bond strenght of Futurabond M was significantly lower than that of Adper Singlebond (p:0,003). Conclusions: The tested all-in-one adhesives showed lower dentin bond strengths than an etch-and-rinse adhesive. |

| Abstract: |
Lichen planus is a chronic immunologic inflammatory disease that frequently involves oral mucosa. Systemic diseases and medications are considered to be precipitating factors in the development of oral lichen planus. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of systemic diseases and medications in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and to determine possible causal relationship. Materials and methods: Retrospective data included medical records of 145 patients, 104 women and 41 men who were referred to the Department of Oral Medicine. All patients had clinical and histopathological criteria fulfilled for diagnosis of oral lichen planus. Data were collected for the period of two years (autumn 2007- autumn 2009). These data were compared with the prevalence of systemic diseases in patients with oral leukoplakia (LPL) and general Croatian population according to the national statistical register. The same comparison was made for the used medications. Obtained data were analyzed by use of χ2 test with level of significance p<0,05. Results: Systemic diseases associated with OLP were found in 77.9% of patients. The most frequent disease was hypertension. Frequency of systemic diseases between patients with OLP and LPL has shown statistically significant difference. Conclusion: Increased prevalence of hypertension among OLP patients in comparison to the prevalence in the general population can not be interpreted as the etiological factor for the development of OLP since hypertension is the most prevalent disease in general population. |

| Abstract: |
Just as their colleagues in European and other developed countries, Croatian dentists, especially owners/carriers of private dental medicine practice, those leasing premises and equipment for private practice, as well as employees in private practice, encounter on a daily basis a series of ethical and moral dilemmas that regularly turn into multiple conflicts of interests: a) they must strictly follow and respect the legal, ethical and other professional norms (as well as those imposed by customs), b) they must run a successful business and be profitable, c) they must demonstrate a socially desirable and business feasible level of social and environmental responsibility. The article attempts to prove the thesis that a rich tradition of theoretical and empirical research into phenomenology of corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate responsibility (CR), corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER), civil corporation (CC), corporate citizenship (CC) and ethical corporations (EC) serve as an excellent conceptual and theoretical starting point when seeking an answer to the question how is it possible to achieve the desirable balance between business, professional (clinical) and social (and environmental) responsibility in dental education and in private and public practice of dental medicine. Based on comparative analysis
of different general theories about corporate social responsibility (CSR) that have been envisaged and implemented in business practice and business ethics of modern companies in the past few decades, we chose a theory that we consider the most suitable for the use in dental medicine and in dental profession. We chose the pyramid of social responsibility, a theory published by Archie B. Carroll in 1991. Using this theory as a general conceptual starting point and applying the knowledge of sociology of dental profession, we propose in the article a specific pyramid of social responsibility for practitioners of dental medicine in private and public sector. Unlike the general CSR pyramid, which starts from the thesis that economic (business) responsibility is a precondition and necessary for other forms of legal, ethical and philanthropic responsibility, this article defends the thesis that in dentistry ethical responsibility is necessary and a precondition for all other forms of responsibility that follow: legal, economic and philanthropic responsibility. |

| Abstract: |
The task of determining the identity of human beings that lost their lives not due to a physical death but due to a mass disaster or a catastrophe caused by human beings such as a war, is a well-known fact in the last decades. Dental structures can be useful for the identification of human cadavers as they are the hardest and most resilient structures of the body. The tragic incident of the 11th of September 2001 has introduced a period in which bioterrorism has a new definition. The aim of the following review is to present the importance of forensic dentistry and its methods of human identification in cases of mass disasters. |

| Abstract: |
Talon cusp is a well delineated anomalous structure located on the surface of an anterior tooth. The exact etiology is unknown. Lingual talon cusps are widely reported but literature reports of facial talon cusps are few & mainly unilateral. Bilateral labial talon cusps have been reported, but only on mandibular teeth. This case documents a rare case of an isolated developmental abnormality of bilateral labial talon cusps on permanent maxillary central incisors in an 8-year old girl. |

| Abstract: |
The presence of multiple supernumerary teeth is not frequent, especially if it is not associated with cleidocranial dysplasia, cleft lip palate or syndromes, such as Gardner syndrome. An apparently healthy 22-year old female patient was referred for surgical extractions of impacted teeth. The panoramic radiographs disclosed impactions of maxillary and mandibular third molars with supernumerary teeth from both sides of maxilla. On the left side there was an unerupted distomolar at the end of the alveolar arch, while on the right side a well-circumscribed radiolucent formation suspicious to be a dentigerous cyst, was located between two supernumerary teeth, surrounding the crown of a third molar. However, after surgical extractions of the teeth and histopathological
evaluation of the sample, the diagnosis of hyperplastic dental follicle was made. The purpose of this report is to present a case of non-syndrome associated multiple supernumerary teeth, their potential involvement in pathological changes of soft tissue of dental follicle, and consequences of their presence for adjacent teeth. |
