Purpose: The aim of this study is to assess the effect of commercially available dentifrices with different fluoride formula on remineralisation of enamel surface. Material and Methods: Enamel blocks were ground flat with water-cooled carborundum discs (320, 600 and 1200 grit) and randomly divided into seven groups. The specimens were subjected to a daily cycling regime comprising two one-minute brushing treatments; one before and one after the demineralization period of 6 hours and 18 hours, and remineralisation in artificial saliva. During the pH cycling regimen each of those seven groups were treated with different dentifrices: fluoride dentifrice Sensodyne Rapid (1040 ppm NaF), Colgate Total (1100 ppm NaF), Parodontax fluoride (1400 ppm NaF), Sensodyne fluoride (1400 ppm NaF), Pronamel Sensodyne (1450 ppm NaF), Elmex-GABA International (1250 ppm F Amine fluoride), and fluoride free Detartrine Paste (Septodont). The surface microhardness (SMH) of those specimens was determined at baseline and after 12 days using HMV-2000 (50 g, 490.3 mN, 10 s) (Shimadzu, Japan). Results: All specimen groups treated with fluorides showed increase in SMH compared to control group. Pronamel, Sensodyne F, Sensodyne Rapid and Colgate Total were statistically superior to other fluoride dentifrices and a fluoride-free control after 12 days pH-cycling regime. Rates of enamel microhardness at baseline and after 12 days cycling treated with Parodontax obtained increase in SMH, but it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results obtained in the present study show that high fluoride toothpastes (1450 ppm) effectively inhibit demineralization under experimental conditions. |

| Abstract: |
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the severity of tooth wear in a sample of Croatian navy employees and to evaluate oral signs and demographic factors related to it. Materials and Methods: The sample included 1092 navy employees aged 20 to 60 years (mean age 37.06±7.85), 985 men and 107 women. The tooth wear severity measurements were based on the relative degree of faceting (0-4 scale). The tooth wear score (the sum of all facets scores) and tooth wear index (average annual growth of sum of ratings corrected for the percent of missing teeth) were correlated to demographic data, masticatory muscles hypertrophy, masticatory muscles tension upon awakening, tooth mobility, linea alba, tongue indentations, traumatic ulcers, noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL), number of teeth and self-reported bruxism in order to determine the specific correlates of tooth wear. Results: The percentage of teeth with occlusal wear ranged from 21.66% in the youngest age group to 52.45% in the oldest age group. The tooth wear score was highest in 40-60-year-old subjects, and lowest in 20-30-year-old subjects. The stepwise multiple linear regression analysis showed that increased tooth wear was significantly associated with NCCL (ß=0.55, p<0.001), tongue indentations (ß=0.17, p<0.001), male gender (ß=- 105, p<0.001), muscle tension (ß=0.103, p<0.05), and muscle hypertrophy (ß=0.063, p<0.05). The R² of the model was 0.49. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that NCCL, tongue indentations, muscle tension, male gender and muscle hypertrophy are potential factors that may influence or predict tooth wear. There was no significant relationship or association between tooth wear index and linea alba, tooth mobility, traumatic ulcers and self report of bruxism. |

| Abstract: |
Objectives: To compare oral status of the fourth-year students of the School of Dental Medicine, and other fourth year students from the University of Zagreb. Materials and methods: Research included 78 dental students and 78 students of other colleges of the University of Zagreb. A standard dental check-up was performed following the WHO‑prescribed methodology and criteria, and by using a dental mirror and community periodontal index (CPI) probe. Results: Mean DMFT of all examined subjects was 7.97 (s.d. = 4.48), with a higher value for males than females (p =0.043). The dental students had a mean DMFT of 6.96 (s.d. =4.82) and the non-dental students group DMFT of 8.97 (s.d. =3.88). This difference was statistically significant (p =0.005). Average CPI indices difference of the examined groups (dental students – 1.91, s.d. =2.40; non-dental students – 2.99, s.d. =2.23) was also statistically significant (p=0.001). The majority of non-dental students (66%) needed, in addition to preventive measures, a conservative dental treatment, in contrast to the dental-students group, where 83% required only preventive or no dental treatment at all. Conclusions: Although the incidence of dental caries, periodontal diseases and treatment need is lower in dental students, the relatively high value of DMFT indices in both groups indicates the need for better preventive measures. Due to an inherent increased awareness of oral health and preventive measures, the dental students could set a good example to their fellowstudents of other colleges. |

| Abstract: |
Objective: It is well known that certain salivary constituents might be disturbed in patients suffering from oral lichen planus (OLP), however, the results of the published studies are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to assess the concentrations of salivary analytes because most of them are part of salivary enzymes which maintain integrity of the oral mucosa which is compromised in OLP patients. Materials and Methods: In 25 patients with OLP (73±1.4 yrs) and in the 24 controls (24±3.7yrs) levels of total proteins, amylase, salivary magnesium, calcium, copper, chloride, phosphate, potassium and sodium were determined. Total proteins were determined by pyrogalol colorimetric method. Amylase levels were determined by continued colorimetric method. Salivary sodium, potassium and chloride were determined by indirect potentiometry whereas salivary
copper and magnesium were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry whereas phosphates were determined by colorimetric method with use of molybdate. Statistical analysis was performed by use of χ2 test, Mann Whitney U test analysis of covariance and Spearman´s correlation. Results: Significantly higher concentration of salivary chloride was detected in OLP patients in comparison to the controls (p=0.025). Furthermore, when the obtained results for salivary analytes were adjusted with respect to the salivary flow rate, increased levels of salivary potassium, sodium, chloride and total proteins were found in patients with OLP when compared to the controls (p=0.622; p=0.504; p=0.600; p=0.586). Concentrations of salivary analytes were not affected by smoking habit. Conclusions: Increased levels of salivary sodium, potassium and chloride are probably a result of significant differences in salivary flow rate between patients with OLP and controls and do not indicate increased salivary antimicrobial activity. |

| Abstract: |
The aim of this study was to present and evaluate the authentic “V” shaped flap for surgical endodontic treatment of periapical chronic diseases. The study included 55 patients in good general health, referred to the department of oral surgery for surgical endodontic treatment of maxillary teeth. “V’’ shaped flap was used in all cases. The surgical technique was described. The surgical sites were assessed at several points in time. Our intraoperative and postoperative clinical findings regarding the implementation of the vestibular “V’’ flap in surgical treatment of periapical chronic diseases, have confirmed its individuality. It was easy to perform the procedure which enabled atraumatic retraction with abundant blood supply and repositioning with a few stitches. Even without premedication, the following day 65.4% of the patients experienced no pain, and mild swelling of the surgical site was evident in all cases. The healing was complete, without any signs of tissue retraction and dehiscence. |

| Abstract: |
The authors present the results of treating mandibular keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) by the surgical method of marsupialisation in the context of current dilemma in the literature regarding this problem. The basic question of whether marsupialisation can be the definitive method in treatment of KCOT still cannot be answered with certainty, neither on the basis of data from the literature nor on the basis of positive data presented in the study. Presentation of slightly modified results of the treatment of a sample from an earlier published study, and two cases treated subsequently give the authors the prerogative to claim that marsupialisation of KCOT is the method of choice, which will probably be the definitive method of treatment. Current data from the literature still require several years of postoperative monitoring of patients and application of additional means of treatment in order to prevent relapse. |

| Abstract: |
So far, only a single case of nickel-induced pemphigus has been reported in the literature. We present a case of a 49-year-old male who had experienced a desquamative gingivitis on the anterior mandibular region which was in contact with porcelain crowns and bridges and severe ulcerations on the right and left buccal mucosa. The lesions did not respond to any medications for a year. After removal of those crowns and bridges with the treatment of potent topical steroids, the lesions responded dramatically. The dental alloy used as the core of crowns and bridges was further investigated using metallurgy techniques. The results showed that the dental alloy mainly contained nickel. Histopathologic and direct immunofluorescence evaluations confirmed a diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris. We concluded that the patient had experienced nickel-induced pemphigus vulgaris-like lesions on the oral mucosa. |

| Abstract: |
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy in most parts of the world and is one of the most confusing, commonly misdiagnosed, and poorly understood diseases. It is unusual among all the head and neck cancers due to its marked geographical predilection, highly malignant tumor growth characteristics, special difficulties in detection and staging and a high rate of treatment failure despite of its radiosensitivity. This carcinoma is rare in most parts of the world with reported incidence of around 1 case per 100,000 population per year. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is common in Southern China and North Africa, where the etiology is related to dietary habits but it is rare in other parts of the world. Therefore, for better understanding of etiopathogenesis, clinical pathological features, early diagnosis and prognosis of NPC, we report a rare case of a nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Central India, of a 19 year old female patient who presented with a mass in her neck and intraoral involvement of the soft palate. |

| Abstract: |
Morphological aberrations in teeth present challenges to root-canal treatment. In such cases, an awareness of the possible anatomical variations is essential to localize and successfully treat the entire root-canal system. The purpose of this case report was to describe a nonsurgical treatment of a maxillary left first premolar with gemination. A 20-year-old female patient was referred for endodontic
treatment of her maxillary left first premolar. Based on the clinical and radiographic examination, pulp necrosis and chronic apical periodontitis and a geminated tooth were diagnosed. The root canals were instrumented using the ProTaper Universal™ rotary system up to F3 and F4 instruments, respectively, for the buccal and palatal root canals. The root canals were dried with sterile paper points and filled with ProTaper gutta-percha points and AH Plus Sealer using a cold lateral condensation technique. At the 12-month follow-up, the tooth was asymptomatic and there was no radiolucency around the apical region. Even in a tooth with extremely complex root canal morphology, a conventional endodontic treatment without surgical intervention can result in adequate healing without any complications. |
